Abimelech surrounded himself with a squad of "scoundrels" (Judges 9:4 NIV). What do you think or feel are the reasons why someone would intentionally choose to surround themselves with "reckless troublemakers" (Judges 9:4 NLT)?

Read James 4:6, in several translations if possible. Why does God care whether we are humble our proud? What type of attitudes and actions indicate a person has issues with pride?

Why do some people struggle in discerning the discipline of the Lord? If we are able to improve our ability to discern the discipline [correction] of the Lord, what difference do you think or feel it will make?

Have several volunteers read aloud Deuteronomy 8:720. How can prosperity and peace (the blessing God) sometimes present a greater challenge, than times of struggle and suffering?

Judges 10:1516 reads: "But the Israelites said to the LORD, 'We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.' 16 Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD. And he could bear Israel's misery no longer." How would you describe what it means to be fully surrendered to the Lord?

For all of his admirable qualities, Jephthah had multiple instances where he failed in his leadership. For instance, Jephthah attempted to reach a treaty with the Ammonites and he made a rash vow that cost him his legacy. There's no indication that God had directed [commanded] Jephthah to initiate either of these two deals. How would you describe what it is like when you are confident God is directing you?
