Kindergarten News February 2018 Units of study for this month… Reader’s Workshop: At the end of the month we are starting a new reading unit on Plants and Trees. This unit focuses on nonfiction texts. Students will be learning about the nonfiction text features that are commonly found in information books. Students will also work on identifying the main topic and details in a text, making connections between texts on the same topic, drawing conclusions and identifying the author’s purpose. The Common Core Standards addressed in this unit will be: RI K. 1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details RI K.2 With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of a text RI K.3 With prompting and support, describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text. RI K.8 With prompting and support, identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text RI K.9 With prompting and support, identify basic similarities in and differences between two texts on the same topic Writer’s Workshop: This month we are starting a new writing unit on Trees & Plants. This unit focuses on informational writing. Students will be learning about topics to become experts and will be writing informational pieces using content specific vocabulary, complete sentences and accurate drawings/representations of the topic. The Common Core Standards addressed in this unit will be: WK.2 Using a combination of drawing, dictating and writing, to compose informative/ explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic. W K.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects K-1 & K-2 Math:
We are starting a new unit on Solid and Flat Shapes. In this unit, students will
recognize and name basic shapes, understand and describe what shapes look like, recognize the relationship between solid and flat shapes and making models using basic flat shapes. The Common Core Standards addressed in this unit will be: KG2: I KG3: I KG4: I KG5: I KG6: I
can name shapes can tell if a shape is flat or solid can describe how shapes are alike and different can build and draw shapes can put shapes together to make another shape
Social Studies Unit 3: Essential Question: What Makes a Community? In this unit, students will learn about different features of communities, people and neighborhoods.
