Football, Volleyball Preseason Workout Sessions In Full Swing

Painting the Caboose Members of the Javelina athletic training staff paint the caboose of Porky’s Pack train in preparation for the upcoming season. The train carries members of the Pack around the Javelina Stadium track each time the home team scores a touchdown.

More than 100 prospects reported for the start of the 2014 Texas A&M-Kingsville football preseason workouts last week in Javelina Stadium. The first session was Friday. The team worked in helmets only for the first two days and added shoulder pads Sunday. Full pads were donned for the first time Tuesday. David Calloway, starting his second year as head coach of the Javelinas, said the team accomplished what the staff had hoped the first few days but emphasized that it would be difficult to evaluate until after the sessions with full pads. Full-pad workouts were set for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. All of this week’s workouts are at 8:50 a.m. The school-year schedule will begin Monday. The Javelinas have three weeks to prepare for the season

opener Sept. 6 with Humboldt (Calif.) State in Javelina Stadium. The volleyball team held its first workout Monday in the Steinke Center. The squad had two sessions Tuesday and will work twice daily Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday before entering the

school-day schedule Monday. The squad will have less than three weeks to prepare for its opening action Sept. 5-6 at the Rollins Invitational Tournament in Winter Park, Fla. Tanya Allen is beginning her fourth year as head of the Javelina volleyball program.

Speakers have been named for the unveiling and dedication of the Gil E. Steinke Statue Sept. 6 in Javelina Stadium at Texas A&MKingsville. The ceremony is set for 11 a.m. inside the southeastern entrance to the stadium. longer term as athletic director. Steinke played his college football with the Javelinas. The speakers are: …..Dr. Steven Tallant, president at TAMUK. …..Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association and former collegiate coach in the Lone Star Conference. …..Ron Harms, former Javelina head football coach and

offensive coordinator under Steinke. …..Dick Watson, former Javelina athlete who spearheaded the Steinke Statue campaign. …..Rene Aguilar, president of the Javelina Alumni Association. …..Manny Saenz, president of the Texas A&I Alumni Association. …..Jim Brown, Javelina football player under Steinke in 1967-70. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE Javelina Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for winning its fifth consecutive Lone Star Conference SAAC Cup. While it goes to the school that compiles the most points in a scoring system that includes several different opportunities, it basically is presented to the program that performs the most campus and community service during the school year. It is an extreme honor to receive this award. Many people in the community know that the Javelina athletes do dozens of community projects each year. The result of their efforts can be seen throughout the city, and the area. There was a project in Alice last year. While the LSC championship trophies are nice to receive, so is the SAAC Cup. It comes in an area where not only the Javelina performances on the field or court or track are important, but on their campuses and in their communities as well. The award has been given six seasons and the Javelinas have received it five consecutive times.

THE JAVELINA FOOTBALL team will be playing in the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium for the fourth consecutive season when the squad takes part in the Lone Star Football Festival Sept. 20. The festival started in 2011 and the Javelinas have been there each year. But the Javelina fans who enjoy attending the annual games in what is billed as the world’s best football facility had better make sure they are there this fall. The Javelinas won’t be playing in the festival in 2015. The Javelina schedule for ’15 was released recently and it has five games in Javelina Stadium and four on opponent fields. There will be two games in the Lone Star Conference playoffs at the end of the regulation season and where those contests will be played depends on the finish in the regular-season standings.

D2FOOTBALL.COM recently conducted a poll, asking for the NCAA Division II baseball players who were bypassed in the Major League Baseball draft and shouldn’t have been. Javelina Taylor Taska was No. 8 on the list. Taska, 6-5, 220-pound senior first baseman and pitcher, was one of the most honored DII players in the nation the past two years. This past season, he hit .346 with nine doubles and nine home runs, and had 48 runs batted in. His stats as a junior were even more impressive. Taska won most of the honors available to a DII player while with the Javelinas. There’s no doubt that the major league scouts overlook a lot of players who aren’t wearing a Division I uniform. There are a lot of reasons for this, which I will stay off my soap box and not get into at this time. Toward the end of the draft, there are players selected whose claim to fame is that they were good in other sports. It isn’t fair to the quality players at the DII and DIII levels. 40 Years Ago, Something Big Was About to Happen

Lots of Water Frequent water breaks are a necessity for the Javelina preseason football workouts as the squad practices in the South Texas heat.

Forty years ago, the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team was coming off a 2-8 season that had fans wringing their hands. Had the Javelinas lost their “stuff”? Was the squad in a tailspin that would continue in 1974? Little did anyone know that the Javelinas were set to begin one of the greatest runs in college football history. The 1974 team would be the first of three undefeated clubs, would capture the first of three consecutive national championships and would go 13-0 to begin a 38-0 three-year record. The Javelinas opened at home with Jacksonville (Ala.) State, a team they had lost to, 3414, in 1973. The hosts escaped with a 2019 victory. A trip to Monterrey Tech for the second game produced a 33-6 win for the Blue and Gold. The first signs of what might be a good year came when the Javelinas opened Lone Star Conference play with Abilene Christian and easily took a 46-14 victory.

ACU had beaten the Javelinas, 35-14, the previous year en route to the LSC title. The fourth outing was with S.F. Austin State in Nacogdoches and the Javelinas took a 28-24 win in a nail-bitter. Another close one came with East Texas State in Commerce, the Javelinas taking a 27-20 victory after having lost, 28-7, in 1973. At that point of the season, the Javelinas seemed to catch fire and everyone, including the players, started thinking that this could be a big year. It was a Javelina romp the remainder of the regular season. Sul Ross State fell, 43-13; Angelo State went down, 42-14; Tarleton State was a 51-7 victim; Sam Houston lost 34-14; Howard Payne was beaten, 42-19, and a 140 win over Southwest Texas in a rain storm in San Marcos ended the regulation campaign, 11-0. The two NAIA playoff games were in Kingsville and provided the Javelinas with tough opposition. Cameron, not a member of the LSC at that time, battled hard before the Javelinas emerged with

a 21-19 win. And in the national title game, Henderson State of Arkansas came to town and the Reddies also gave the Javelinas a battle before falling, 34-23. Needless to say, the atmosphere in Javelinaland was somewhat different between the 1974 and 1975 sesaons. Many of the key players in the 1974 perfect campaign were back, some for the next two years.

And although no one could have predicted that the team would go 25-0 in 1975 and 1976 and take two more national trophies, most knew that what had appeared glum and doom before 1974 had now turned to sunshine and roses. Gil Steinke was head coach of the 1974 team and assistant coaches were John Cosgrove, Ron Harms, Fred Jonas, Jim Lance, Don McDonald and Gene Walkoviak.

Signature of one of the parents/guardians______________________ Taking the Challenge Javelina softball coaches Betsy Dean and Carter McBurnett accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge last week and got drenched at the Hubert Softball Field. People throughout the country have accepted the challenge and have helped the ALS Association raise more than $2.3 million since July 29. The organization raised $25,000 during the same period last year. It started with Pete Frates, a former member of the Boston College baseball team who was stricken with ALS in 2007. There is no treatment for ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and those with the disease usually have 2-5 years to live. Frates started the challenge with friends in the Boston area and it has apread throughout the country. All members of the Kennedy family of Massachusetts accepted the challenge as have Justin Timberlake, Matt Lauer, Martha Stewart and other movie, television and sports celebrities. Those accepting the challenge have 24 hours to accept and donate to the ALS Association. If they don’t accept the challenge, the donation amount is increased. Those accepting also issue a challenge to someone else. Dean challenged Javelina volleyball coach Tanya Allen, who is expected to get “iced” this week.
