WITH THE OLYMPIC Games currently underway in Brazil, there is a lot of attention being paid to the international athletic scene. The Javelina athletic teams and individuals have long been as active on the international stage as any school in the country. The men’s basketball team has hosted squads from Canada, Lithuania and Mexico and have met the Mexico teams in Kingsville and in Mexico. The football team has also played Mexico squads on both sides of the border and became the first U.S. squad to play in Europe when the 1976 Javelinas played a five-game exhibition schedule in Austria, France and Germany. The football team will be the first club from Texas to meet a Canadian team when it hosts Simon Fraser from British Columbia Sept. 10 in Javelina Stadium. Track and field has also competed in Mexico, including at the Olympic Village in Mexico City in 1969. The Javelinas have been in meets with teams from Canada and Mexico. The Javelinas had had football and basketball players participating in the Canadian Football League and European football leagues. There have been Javelina baseball players on clubs in Canada and Mexico. Over the past few months, the Javelinas have been as active internationally as during any period in their history. The volleyball team is currently on an exhibition tour in Nicaragua. High jumper Jeron Robinson recently competed in a meet in Canada. He was also in the Pan American Games last summer in Canada. Javelina head track and field coach Ryan Dall was recently a coach for the USA team in the North America-Central AmericaCaribbean Games in El Salvador. And as mentioned earlier, the football team will host Simon Fraser next month. The Javelina rosters have been sprinkled with international athletes through the years. NCAA DIVISION II notes: …Ten games involving Gulf South Conference teams will be televised on ESPN3 this fall. The first game is Sept. 17 and continues through the regulation season. …Cities interested in hosting future NCAA championships are being asked to specifically outline how they will protect participants and spectators from discrimination. These cities must complete a questionnaire from the NCAA by Aug. 12, detailing any local anti-discrimination laws, provisions for refusal of services and other facility-specific information. Currently awarded host sites will have a separate deadline, which will be determined later, to submit the same information. The policy applies to all championships, including those with sites that are awarded based on competition results, also known as non-predetermined championships. The requirement follows action of legislatures in several states, which have passed laws allowing businesses or government to refuse to provide services to some people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. The questionnaire integrates the requirement into the bidding process for championships, adding it to information already required regarding access for people with disabilities and details on playing and practice facilities. The committees for each of the 90 NCAA championships, which are comprised of representatives from NCAA schools, will use this information to ensure they award championships to cities that meet all hosting requirements.
