BEFORE JANE DODDS passed away a year ago, she requested that in lieu of flowers friends make donations to the Kingsville Garden Club Scholarship. The response has been overwhelming. The Garden Club has received more than $16, 000 in memorials locally and from throughout the nation. The club made a decision to create an endowed scholarship in Jane’s name with the TAMUK Foundation. The requirement for an endowed scholarship is $25,000. The club made a $4,000 donation and Jane’s family donated the remaining $5,000. It is now the Jane Dodds Kingsville Garden Club Scholarship Endowment. Jane was an energetic supporter of the Garden Club and the University. She, her husband Scott and her son Ed have been loyal supporters of the school and Javelina athletic programs for decades. Ed worked in the athletic department while an undergraduate. Distributions from the endowment will be used to provide at least one scholarship to a full-time student in good standing pursuing a degree in plant and soil sciences at Texas A&MKingsville. The recipient must be a sophomore or higher and must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The awards shall be designated by the University Scholarship Committee and recipients will be awarded at least $1,000 payable in two equal installments over the academic year. THERE WILL BE an interesting matchup in the Javelina softball series with Eastern New Mexico Thursday and Friday at Hubert Field. The top hitter for each team is from Elk Grove, Calif. And they are former teammates at Elk Grove High School. Victoria Schoonard-Saborio is a sophomore infielder for the Javelinas and Erikka Burke is a junior infielder for the Zias. Schoonard-Saborio leads the Javelinas at the plate with a .438 average. She has six doubles, two triples and six home runs. Burke is the top hitter for Eastern with a .348 average. CENTRAL WASHINGTON, THE Javelina football team’s opening opponent Sept. 2 in Kingsville, opened its spring workouts last week and head coach Ian Shoemaker was pleased with the first practice. “We had a lot of energy today, which proves these guys are excited to get out here and compete,” Shoemaker said. “It wasn’t a perfect practice by any means but very encouraging. The offense looked smooth at times and our defense was sharp. Overall, I was pleased with the effort put forth, and the preparation our players put in to get us up and running to start this season off.” There are “more than 50” letterwinners returning along with a large number of redshirts. There are also a “handful” of transfers and walk-ons. “These practices are vital for anyone who has recently joined our program, and for those who sat out due to redshirt,” Shoemaker said. “They need reps, and everyone is going to get an opportunity to prove their value to our program. This time also helps build confidence for those who are returning from injury and allows our transfers to get a solid grasp of our schemes and concepts as we move forward to the start of the 2017 season.” The Wildcats workout at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.
