Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Guild Newsletter

Meeting: September 9, 2014 First United Church William & King Streets, Waterloo

A Word from the President Welcome knitters to the 29th year of the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters' Guild. For 29 years we have been a group that provides a community for knitters of all skill levels from beginner to guru. We have supported, encouraged and challenged each other while we worked and knitted together to improve our skills and artistry. We have worked to increase the interest in and knowledge of knitting and related activities. We have promoted and celebrated our craft in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. We ended our 28th year with a very successful and inspiring adjudicated show that had over 150 beautiful entries. We begin our 29th year with our popular and well attended Knitters' Fair on Saturday September 13th. This year will be our second at our new location, the Kitchener Auditorium, where we will have almost twice as much space as last year to spread out and enjoy the vendors and meeting and visiting with fellow knitters. Our knitters have already attended several community events, at the Kitchener Market and Laurier University, to promote knitting and the Guild. There will be another community outreach opportunity for us at Schneider House later in September.

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Knit and Chat 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Special Guest: Serena, Therapy Alpaca 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Guild Meeting Alpaca Yarn from Farm to Needles KWKG Executive 2014-2015: These are the people who volunteer to make your Guild the best it can be President: Carol Moogk-Soulis, [email protected] Vice President: [email protected] Past President: Dee-Anne Shillinglaw, [email protected] Membership: Iris Levine [email protected] Treasurer: Elaine Rendle, [email protected] Secretary: Ellen Lovell, [email protected] Programme: [email protected] Goodwill: [email protected]

We have increased our programme budget this year and we will be drawing from the suggestions made by members at our May meeting for speakers to talk about specific knitting skills from the basics of manipulating the tools and materials correctly and ergonomically to how to perform intricate and advanced stitches, techniques and patterns. We hope to have a very special guest at our first meeting on September 9th. We also hope to partner with some local knitting shops to share the travel costs of speakers who would do a workshop at the shop on the weekend and then speak at our Guild meeting to members on the following Tuesday evening.

Library: Toni Peter, [email protected]

Our Guild is what we make of it since it is ours and depends upon all of us to volunteer. I am grateful to all of those members who have made the Guild what it is today and have given me a wonderful community to be part of. I look forward to working with all of you in the year ahead to make our knitting community even better.

Parking I would like to remind everyone to not park in the church parking lot. It is very tiny, many meetings run concurrently with our own, and there is not enough space for everyone. The Town Square lot that is right beside the church is free and spacious. Please park there.

K-W Knitters Fair: September 13th, 2014 Are you ready for it? This year's Knitters' Fair is coming up quickly, and we have some great surprises for you! I have been hinting all year that we will have new activities this year, in addition to our expanded space (more seating + more capacity = more yarny goodness for everyone), and I can finally share those details! The fair this year will include the yarn and supplies that you know and love, spread out into two adjoining arenas at the Kitchener Aud. The eating area that we had last year has been expanded to include loads of seating, including some comfier seating so you can sit and chat with your friends (new and old) for as long as you like. We will hold our fashion show of new designs at 11am, and a panel of great podcasters will be speaking at 1pm. (the website has details: http://www.kwknittersguild.ca/fair/information-for-attendees/). And now for our newest set of activities: the Knitters' Spa. We will have professionals at hand to help you relax from a busy day of shopping and learn a little about how your body works when you knit. Soak Wash manicures (in Ravelry colours), back and hand massages, chiropractic, postural, and ergonomics analyses, and chair yoga lessons will all be available in our spa. Most of these services will be offered for free (with an optional charitable donation), so stop by for a look between squooshing the yarn, ogling the colours, and admiring the designs at the shops. I hope to see all you there!

Knitters’ Fair: Call for Volunteers Interested in volunteering for the Fair? Remember that the mandate of the Guild is to promote and celebrate our craft in the KW area. The Fair is put on by the Guild as a whole and needs the help of all it’s members! Volunteers receive free admission, have no wait to get in, and are eligible for special door prizes. Please e-mail [email protected] and include your name, e-mail address, and telephone number. Thanks in advance for helping to make OUR fair the best it can be. And even if you can’t volunteer, we hope you will all stop by on Saturday, September 13th, to check out the yarn, the speakers, and the new fun events at this year’s Fair! Check the Guild website over the summer for updates.

Library New year, new books! Lots of autumn patterns for you to fall in love with - pun absolutely intended. Charts Made Simple by JC Briar

New American Knits by Amy Christoffers (Classic sportswear patternssweaters and a few accessories)

55 Christmas Balls to Knit by Arne & Carlos

There were several books and topics that had been requested last year, and I'm glad to say that some of these harder to find books made their way to me over the summer. Please check out our new titles and old ones too; I'm sure everyone needs some inspiration for the upcoming sweater season. Then, of course, where better to get the yarn you need than at the Knitter's Fair?

For our new members, you're welcome to borrow any of the books in our collection, just please make sure to bring them back each month. To borrow a book simply put your name on the card inside the front cover, and the month the book it to be returned. For example, a book borrowed in Sept should have "Oct 14" on the card.

If no one has placed a hold on the title you’re welcome to keep it another month, otherwise it must be returned to be lent to the next in line. Holds can be placed by putting your name on the catalogue card of the book you would like to borrow - the cards can be found at the library table, just see a volunteer.

Should you have any title suggestions or topics of interest, please contact me via the library email address and I'll do what I can!

Yarn Table The yarn table is a great way to get rid of any yarns you don't want anymore, and to make room in the new year for new stash. Just set prices and bring a list of your yarns/quantities/prices with your name on it. Don’t forget to scope out the yarn table for new-to-you bargains, too!

 Knit and Chat Before the Monthly Knitter's Guild Meeting The hall at First United Church is open to us before our meeting. We can gather to knit and chat from 6:30 on. The membership table and library will be open at 7:00. Our meeting will take place as usual from 7:30 to 9:30.

Volunteer Corner There are a couple of open volunteer positions with the Guild, if you are interested in getting involved, but don’t want a large job just yet! We need people to help with the Raffle Table and the Library Table during Guild meetings. If you are able to help out, please contact Erin McKee, the volunteer coordinator, during a meeting or at [email protected].

Other Stuff The website team is working on a members-only section of the website. In this section, you will be able to find executive meeting minutes, budgets, and year end reports. This information will also be available in a binder at the library. It is important for the members to have access this information, but it is not information that needs to be posted for the general public. All of the information that you are used to seeing on the website—newsletters, meeting information, etc.—will still be publically available.

Newsletter Have you ever wanted to submit a piece to be published in the newsletter? Send any inquiries or entries to [email protected]. All entries must be submitted by 2 weeks before the next Guild meeting date. The next submission deadline will be for the October Newsletter: September 30, 2014. Every time you send something in to be printed in the newsletter, you get a chance to win a gift certificate in May.

Community Corner I wanted to introduce this new idea to the newsletter this month, and share with our members some of the things that come flying our way from "the outside world". We receive several emails, tweets, contacts via our website and sometimes even physical mail from our broader community with any number of requests for information and services. A very popular type of request that comes our way is "I want an item knit, can you help me?". I must admit, we as a Guild do not have a process for dealing with this yet, and I'd like to rustle up some help in developing one. I've done my best to reach out to those of you I know personally who might want to take on commissions, but it's a bit haphazard right now, especially since not every knitter is specialized enough to meet every request. Some requests are for small simple things, like "can your group help us knit hats for our charity baskets" and others are more complex, such as "my grandmother died with this sweater halfknit, can you figure out what the pattern is and finish it for me?". We have been asked to repair damaged antique knits, help find a matching yarn, finish a hat for someone who developed arthritis, or knit a special toy exactly to a child's specifications. Sadly, many of these requests have lingered unanswered, but I hope to find a way to change that (and would love your input.) Another common request we get is for information we already distribute, via twitter, web pages, our newsletter, and the like. I'm afraid there's not a lot to be done with these except try EVEN HARDER to have Guild information put "out there" on all channels. It's a bit disappointing the number of people who find our web site, then don't read what's there and instead send an email asking for the date of the Knitters Fair, or where and when we have meetings. One way we are looking at addressing this is web site improvements, so it is more clear and readable. Another is to have broader distribution of our promotional flyers. If there are any members who would like to pick up an armful of postcards at any meeting, to take out and leave in cafes, public notice boards, or other community centres where information can be put out, please just ask any Executive member to find you a few. A third type of email that comes our way is often people trying to sell us things - many of these are what's commonly known as "spam" and I do just hit the delete button. But some might be of interest, and again, I would love your input, as our Membership, as to how to handle. Some of these are emails offering yarn, equipment and notions for sale from an estate - some are even donation offers, which we have tried to handle through our Charity table but our present Charity Table coordinator is hoping to have a break and we are still looking for someone to take on that role. If anyone is interested, or even has suggestions on how to handle donation offers, again, please get in touch with any Executive member. As always, you can feel free to send me an email at [email protected], or catch me at a meeting. I look forward to sharing a little more of our Inbox with you in future issues. Knit happy, everyone.

Johanna Communications Coordinator.
