MINUTES Lenawee C2C Student Success Network Reading by Third Grade October 20, 2015 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Community Room @ LISD Education Service Center http://www.lisd.us/lenawee-cradle-to-career-2/

Attendance: Heather Franco, Sister Carleen Maly, Sue Hammersmith, Carrie Mitchell, Julie Shoemaker, Marsha Evenson, Eleanor Wollett, Travis Stricklin, Cathy Chesher, Dan Buron, Mellissa Wilson, Lauren Sugg. Cindy Marcum, Carma Roesch, Ann Hinsdale-Knisel, Stan Masters 1. Eleanor Wollett, Dr. Carrie Mitchell, and Siena Heights University Language Arts majors, Julie Shoemaker and Travis Stricklin, shared information on the federal Collaboration for Effective Education Development Accountability Reform (CEEDAR) Grant that the Siena Heights University receives. The focus is to work in tandem with the Michigan Department of Education, Western Michigan University, Northern University, Grand Valley State University, Lenawee Intermediate School District, and local districts toward the goal of enhancing the literacy learning of Pre-K through 3rd grade learners. 2. Stan Masters reviewed the content of the data collected from each school district and Lenawee Christian last school year and reviewed the steps for collecting this school year’s assessment data. We are still working on a definition of what it means to be “reading proficient by third grade in Lenawee County”. http://s3.amazonaws.com/lisd/Reading-by-Third-Grade-102015.mp4 3. The following is a beginning list of what is happening in Lenawee County schools /community with teaching reading skills: o Rotary Members (approximately 20 members) are mentoring children in Adrian Public Schools o Volunteers work in Clinton Schools in a program called SMILE funded through Title 1 o Volunteers work with children in Tecumseh in a program called HOPE o Mellissa Wilson, LISD, trains teachers across the county to use Daily 5 as a classroom management tool. Adrian Public Schools used this tool K-4th grade and Clinton Community Schools are in their 5th year of using the tool. o Group asked if the Lenawee County District Library might share their Bookmobile schedule with this group o What reading programs are used at the Boys and Girls Club?? o Rotary is installing mini libraries in Adrian o Books returned to Imagination Library are passed on to the Women’s Shelter o Reading Review in Tecumseh (kindergarten)? o Goodwill receives many books and distributes them in many different ways o Could libraries place books they eliminate from their shelves in shelters? 4. We need to inventory summer programs where reading might be incorporated…if we send out a Survey Monkey…who should it go to? What questions do we want to ask?

5. Reading skills that the group would like to focus on Summer 2016: Comprehension and Vocabulary 6. What training might college students give volunteers who want to help with a community wide summer reading initiative? Next Meeting: December 15, 2015, 3-5:00 p.m. at LISD Education Service Center, 4107 N. Adrian Hwy. o Come with a thought out plan for a community-wide summer reading program effort o Who might be partners in your community? o What programs are planned for the summer that might be willing to experiment with us?  Who would be the contact people and give us their contact information  Location of the program?
