NSIC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week: Wayne State’s Ross Bunchek (Jr., Valparaiso, Ind.) hit an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying Mark of 192’ 11” in the hammer throw at the Vance Butler Invite. His mark was a personal best by mark by almost 6 feet. The mark was also a new Wayne State College record. He is currently ranked 9th in the nation in the event. NSIC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week: Concordia-St. Paul’s Domonique Gilmer (Sprints, 5-10, 183, Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong HS / Iowa Central CC) took home a pair of first place finishes at the Hamiline Invite as he won the 200m and 400m. His time in the 200m was 21.86 and his time in the 400m was 48.78. Gilmer won the 200m by nearly half a second and took home the 400m title by almost a full second. NSIC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week: Augustana’s Andrea Whitney (Fr., Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) won the women’s high jump at Saturday’s Vance Butler Invitational hosted by Augustana, clearing 5 feet, 7 inches to provisionally qualify in the event. It was the freshman’s first outdoor collegiate contest. NSIC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week: U-Mary’s Nicketa Coombs (Soph., Kingston, Jamaica) was a triple winner, placed second in another event and was a part of two provisional national qualifying performances at the American River Community Invitational in Sacramento, CA, on Saturday. Coombs won the 200 meter dash in a provisional qualifying time of 24.64. The sophomore standout placed second in the 400 meters in a time of 56.66 and anchored two winning relay teams. The 47.07 clocking in the short relay was also a provisional qualifying mark.
NSIC Team Notes AUGUSTANA Men Track: Travis Beniak (Jr., Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota Mazeppa HS) won the 1,500-meter run at this past weekend’s Vance Butler Invitational hosted by Augustana with a time of 3 minutes, 53.96 seconds--less than a second off the provisional qualifying time. He also ran a time of 1:56.56 to take third in the men’s 800-meter run. Men Field: Aaron Jung (Jr., Watertown, S.D./Watertown HS) placed fourth in the men’s shot put at the Vance Butler Invitational hosted by Augustana on Saturday. He registered a toss of 50 feet, 4.75 inches. Women Track: Molly Kokesh (So., Scotland, S.D./Scotland HS) put together a strong performance at Saturday’s Vance Butler Invitational hosted by Augustana. She finished second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:42.52 and was second again in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.65. NSIC Team Notes Continued Concordia-St. Paul Domonique Gilmer (Sprints, 5-10, 183, Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong HS / Iowa Central CC) took home a pair of first place finishes as he won the 200m and 400m. His time in the 200m was 21.86 and her time in the 400m was 48.78. Gilmer won the 200m by about a half second and took home the 400m title by almost a full second. Competing in the first outdoor meet of the season Domonique Gilmer has picked up where he left off in the indoor year as he was crowned the champion of 200m and 400m, Saturday at the Hamline Invite. Gilmer took home the crown in the 400m with a time of 48.78 and then took home the 200m in 21.86. Zach Pederson took second in the 110 m hurdles with a time of 15.31 and third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 56.79. Men Field: Diahn Zeon’s jump of 6.85m was just .01m short of first place. Nate Thienes took third with a throw of 15.32m and Dylan Enderlein’s 100m dash time was 11.10. Both Pederson and Thienes set new CU records as Pederson did so in the 400m hurdles and Thienes set his in the shot put.Robert Spence who took fourth in the 100m with a time of 11.17. Andy Chaussee took fifth in the pole vault with a height of 14-7 1/4. Jimmi Mireri set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 22.61 finishing sixth. Britt Bickert led the way taking fifth in the shot put with a personal best 37-5 3/4. Brittany Dohmen and Tolu Ojoyeyi each took seventh in the meet as Dohmen ran a 26.26 in the 200m dash and Ojoyeyi ran a 12.84 in the 100m dash. MINNESOTA DULUTH Womens Track: Morgan Place, on April 2nd at Hamline University, provisionally qualified in the women’s 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:42.88. She won this by over 45 seconds from the next competitor and was only 4 seconds off automatically qualifying. This time currently ranks her 6th in the country. Northern State Men Track: Sophomore Luke Hauert led the men’s team with a second place finish in the 110 and 400 meter hurdle events. Hauert nearly qualified for the national meet by missing the two provisional marks by .21 and .68 of a second in both the 110 and 400 hurdles on his first attempt of the young outdoor season. Women Field: Junior Melodi Boke led the women’s team with a second place finish in the shot put. Boke threw the shot 44-10.25 provisionally qualifying for the outdoor national meet. Melody is currently ranked 12th in the nation for the shot put event. University of Mary Women Track: In her first outdoor meet of the season, Nicketa Coombs (Soph., Kingston, Jamaica) was a triple winner, placed second in another event and was a part of two provisional national qualifying performances at the American River Community Invitational in Sacramento, CA, on Saturday. It was the first time the all-NSIC performer had thrown outside all year long due to inclement training conditions in the Dakotas. Men Field: Tyler Zacher (Beulah, ND), the NSIC indoor triple junp champion and an NCAA All-American, started the season with an outdoor PR mark of 47’ 2 ½” to place fourth at the American River Community Invitational in Sacramento, CA. Men Track: Jesse Bennett (Fr., Kalispell, MT) opened his outdoor season by winning the 1,500 meter run in a time of 4:03.96 at the American River Community Invitational in Sacramento, CA. The freshman from Montana came back later in the same meet to place fifth in the 800 meter run (1:57.49). ST. CLOUD STATE Women Track: Roshane Boreland (Jr., Rend Lake, Ill.) made the transition from the indoor to the outdoor season with a win in the 800 meters at the Vance Butler Invite in Sioux Falls, S.D. Boreland won the 800 in 2:15.18. She also had a third place finish in the 1500 meter run in 4:43.71. Women Field: Becky Schmidt (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn.) had a solid outing in the long jump. She leaped 16-10.75 to finish in sixth place. St. Cloud State middle distance runner Roshane Boreland (Jr., Rend Lake, Ill.) and sprinter Felicia Carlson (FY, Beloit, Wis.) ran to first place finishes on the final day of the Augustana College Vance Butler Invite Saturday in Sioux Falls, S.D. Boreland won the 800 meters in a time of 2:15.18. She also had a third place finish in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:43.71. Carlson won the 200 meter dash in a time of 25.54. She also had a fifth place run in the 100 meter dash in a time of 12.89. Rebecca Kitzman (Jr., Verona, Wis.) set a school record in the hammer in first day competition at the Vance Butler Invitational Kitzman finished in ninth place and threw the hammer 152’ breaking the old record of 150’7” held by Amanda Kunkel since the 2007 season. Men Track: The St. Cloud State 4x100 relay won the event at the Vance Butler Invite on Saturday in a time of 41.93. The relay runners were Tendeh Brownell (FY, Liberia), George Kawalawu (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Alfonso Scott (FY, Ballwin, Mo.), and Nick Trisko (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) Men Field: Cyrus Raivo (Sr., Brook Park, Minn.) won the javelin at the Vance Butler Invite with a personal record throw of 188’1”. The St. Cloud State 4x100 meter relay of Tendeh Brownell, George Kawalawu, Alfonso Scott and Nick Trisko won the race in 41.93. Cyrus Raivo (Sr., Brook Park, Minn.) won the javelin with a personal record toss of 188’1” at the Vance Butler Invite. Adam Kershaw (Sr., Foley, Minn.) and Nick Trisko (Sr., Melrose, Minn.) had a pair of second place finishes on the men’s side. Kershaw was second in the discus with a throw of 161-08. He also placed 12th in the shot put with a toss of 46-07.25. Trisko ran to a second place finish in the 200 meters in 21.84 and placed second in the 100 meters in 11.18. NSIC Team Notes Continued Wayne State Men Track: John Kern (Senior, Cedar Bluffs, Nebr.) won the 5000 meter run with an outdoor personal best by over 46 seconds with a time of 15:04.54 at the Vance Butler Invite in Sioux Falls, SD over the weekend. Kern also ran a personal best time by almost 8 seconds in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a second place finish and hit an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying mark of 9:17.68. He is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the event. Men Field: Ross Bunchek (Junior, Valparaiso, Ind.) hit an NCAA Provisional National Qualifying Mark of 192’ 11” in the hammer throw at the Vance Butler Invite. His mark was a personal best by mark by almost 6 feet. The mark was also a new Wayne State College record. He is currently ranked 9th in the nation in the event. Women Field: Brianne Hofstetter (Junior, Daykin, Neb.) picked up a 4th place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 35’ 7 1/4” at the Vance Butler Invitational. Winona State Women Field: Abby Albers (Fr from Spearfish, SD) won the Long Jump with a jump of 5.39m (17’ 8 ¼”) at the Carroll Invite this weekend. Additionally, Abby ran the 3rd leg of the Warriors’ winning 4x100 meter relay. Women Track: Brittney Rynda (Jr from New Prague, MN) won the 400 meters in a time of 58.63 and ran the third leg of the Warriors’ winning 4x400 meter relay at the Carroll Invite. Brittney Also placed 2nd in the Triple Jump with a mark of 11.17m (36’ 7 ¾”)
PAST NSIC Team Notes AUGUSTANA 3/27/11 Women Track: Runa Falch placed 25th overall in the 5,000-meter run and crushed the Augustana school record by more than 30 seconds at the Stanford Invitational. Falch’s time of 16:28.57 was fastest time turned in by a Division II runner at the meet and is also the fastest time in Division II this season. She took down a school record that had stood for more than 30 years in the event, bettering Pat Reisendorfer’s mark of 17:09.4 in 1980. Falch’s time automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championship. Men Track: Travis Beniak placed ninth in the 3,000-meter steeple chase at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, checking in with a time of 9:01.24. His time was the best by a Division II runner and is currently the top in the nation in Division II. Beniak provisionally qualified in the event. Women Field: Noel Bentele won the hammer throw at the Chabot College Relays and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship with her toss of 163 feet, 7 inches. She won the event by more than 10 feet. Concordia-St. Paul Three CU athletes competed on Saturday, March 27th at the St. John’s Invitational. Esther Jandrich had a great day finishing second in the pole vault with a height of 9’ 10’’. Andy Chaussee finished seventh in the pole vault with height of 13’ 3 1/2’’. The third pole vaulter Zach Whitman set his PR with a 9’ 10’’ mark of his own. The Golden Bears will be back in action again on April 2nd at the Hamline Invitational.
