Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate CARE in the classroom setting by practicing positive and negative scenarios and making observations of others with 100% accuracy. Discuss and Model Positive Examples: Compassionate 1. Student is orally sharing experience, answer, or question in the classroom (circle time or instructional time). Be compassionate! Listen to the person who is sharing; support and accept the ideas, answers and shared experiences. If you have more knowledge on the subject, offer classmate help (within appropriate means - this varies by class and what the teacher deems appropriate). For older students: If you disagree with the information politely share your opposing argument. 2.Younger: Student needs material from the shared bin that you are currently using. Be compassionate! When you are done with the crayon/scissors/glue etc, offer it to the classmate in need. Also review: Student is using the material that you need. Be compassionate! Finish any work that you can complete without the specific material (color/scissors/glue etc) and when the student is done, politely ask to use it.
Older Student: Student forgets his/her materials in the locker and/or home. Be compassionate! Share extra materials you may have available so that your classmate can successfully accomplish classwork. Accountable 1. Younger: Older: Students are talking and catching up on their weekends during locker time. Most people start walking to class but the ongoing conversation hasn’t ended. Be accountable! End the conversation quickly and catch up later. Walk to class and be on time! 2.Younger: When using the classroom’s source of supplies, be accountable! This supply is for the class and is to last more than one time. Use materials appropriately (model what this looks like - cap markers until you hear a click etc.) Work together to put away the materials to insure that they’re all available for next time. use material appropriately Older: Your book bag is very heavy with all the books you took for homework and you don’t want to carry it around with everything during the school day. Be accountable! Make a schedule and put it up on your locker door to remind you what classes you have in between locker breaks. This way you know what books, folders, binders and materials you’ll need for the next time block. Switch out the materials every locker break and always carry: paper, pencils, pens, erasers with you! Respectful Younger and Older: Think before you act. In our classrooms, we are respectful! Student is raising his/her hand when he/she has something to say. They wait to be called on and turn their bodies to listen to the other members of their classroom. This is how we show we are respectful in the classroom. Engaged Discuss and Model Negative Examples: COMPASSIONATE A student is doing a math problem on the board. They got a different answer than you did. You decided to shout out, “You’re wrong. That is so easy.” Is this a compassionate response? What could you have done differently to show we are compassionate? ACCOUNTABLE Younger: When the teacher says it is time to clean up, you continue working instead of cleaning up supplies and putting your work/materials away. Is this being accountable? What could you have done differently to show you are accountable?
Older: During locker time, a student decided to talk to friends in the hallway instead of using their locker. Then when it was time to go to class, the student didn’t have his/her pencil or binder and so they were unprepared for class. Was this being accountable? What could we have done differently to show we are accountable? RESPECTFUL Student is calling out and talking when his classmate is talking. When classmate gives an opinion/answer, student says something to hurt the other student’s feelings. Is this being respectful? What could we have done differently to show we are respectful? ENGAGED What could we have done differently to show we are engaged? Practice Positive Behaviors Have students practice the 3 above scenarios. Give a glow to each student, “I like the way you.... (complete sentence using one of the CARE words)” Ex. Lulu, I like the way you were compassionate in our classroom. You put the eraser back in the table bin so others could use the classroom materials.” Check for Understanding Have the class go to another classroom in the building. Observe other students in their classes. Discuss what they were doing to show that they CARE.
