Thunderstorms and Wind Damage… Another Threat to Yields in 2015! Over the last 30 days, a significant portion of the Midwest row crop production has been blanketed with rainfall. Potential problems already exist for Corn and Soybean crops in Missouri, southern Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky where between 6 to 15 inches of rain fell during that period. Unfortunately, that is not the end of their woes.

TORNADO REPORTS  HIGH WINDS  HAIL REPORTS Last week , 2 to 4+ inches of rain fell across eastern North Dakota, north central Minnesota, southern Iowa, west central Illinois, southeast Indiana, and central to eastern Kentucky. Wet soils, ponding, and flooding of fields prevailed everywhere. As if more rain on top of what had already fallen was not bad enough, Mother nature then added severe thunderstorm damage to the mix starting last Sunday afternoon (7/12) that continued to rumble right through late Tuesday, the 14th. Over that three-day period, there were over 1,500 severe weather reports of tornadoes, high winds, or large hail. Damaging winds of 55 mph or greater accounted for 1,339 of those reports. Lodging or blowing-down of corn stalks in normal soils can be substantial anytime, but shallow rooted stalks due to overly-wet conditions are even more susceptible.

7 Day Rainfall Totals as of July 17, 2015

Rainfall Forecast: Western Corn Belt: Light rain totals of a trace to .5 inch are expected across the western portions of the Dakotas and Nebraska. Otherwise, look for 1 to 2.5 inches to blanket the eastern Dakotas, eastern Nebraska, most of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota. Coverage at 1 inch or greater will be near 70 percent. Severe thunderstorms will be imbedded within the thunderstorm complexes. Central and Eastern Corn Belt: Widespread totals in the 1 to 2.5 inch range are expected across Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, southern lower Michigan, and eastern Kentucky. Coverage at 1 inch or greater will be near 90 percent. Severe thunderstorms will also be a threat to these states as well.
