Prince Albert Raiders Game Notes RAIDER REVIEW: The Raiders and Rebels matched on up evenly in the first period on Tuesday night. Each team had one penalty, eight shots, and no goals after one. Red Deer opened the scoring 3:23 into the second. Matteo Gennaro evened things up for the Raiders netting his 10th of the season on the power play with just over three minutes to play in the second. Despite some good chances in the third period, it ended scoreless and took this 1-1 tie to overtime. Both goaltenders played strong games and neither team was able to pull away in overtime sending this to a shootout. Red Deer’s Riley Sheen scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Rebels the 2-1 victory. RE-SCHEDULED: Due to weather and travel conditions, the scheduled game on February 14 against the Regina Pats was postponed. The Raiders and Pats will make-up the game on Tuesday March 10th, all tickets for the original date will be honoured at the March 10th game. PLAYOFF PICTURE: The Raiders’ record of 23-32-2-1 puts them 10th overall in the Eastern Conference. So far in his rookie season, Stransky has 30 points (9G, 21A) through 56 games. His older brother had 26 points (14G, 12A) through 71 games in his rookie season with Saskatoon in 2010-11. Brandon Wheat Kings Game Notes GAME PREVIEW The Brandon Wheat Kings open a two-game Saskatchewan road trip Friday night when they visit the Prince Albert Raiders (6:37 p.m., 880 CKLQ). The Wheat Kings are on a nine-game road winning streak, and are riding a 16-game point streak (14-0-1-1) overall. Brandon enters Friday’s game trailing the Kelowna Rockets for two points for top spot in the WHL’s overall standings, and with a 15-point lead over secondplace Medicine Hat in the Eastern Conference standings. TEAM NOTES Friday’s game is the fifth of six meetings between the Raiders and the Wheat Kings this season. Brandon is 4-0-0-0 against Prince Albert this season, part of the Wheat Kings 21-3-2-2 record against East Division opponents. Tim McGauley leads the Wheat Kings with four goals and seven points in four games against the Raiders while Peter Quenneville (2 G, 3 A) and Eric Roy (1 G, 4 A) have five points apiece. Jordan Papirny is 3-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .941 SPCT in three starts against Prince Albert. Brandon will have seven prospects play in the Canada Winter Games in Prince George next week, with all of them part of the Wheat Kings’ 2014 Bantam Draft class. 8th round pick Leif Mattson was a late addition to Manitoba’s roster, and joins 5th round pick Connor Gutenberg and 6th round pick James McIsaac on Team Manitoba. 2nd round pick Ian Mitchell, 3rd round pick Jarrod Gourley and 4th round selection Jeremy Klessens will play for Team Alberta, while 5th round pick Hunter Arps will play for Team Saskatchewan. The Wheat Kings 1st round pick, and first overall pick, Stelio Mattheos was selected to play for Team Manitoba but is unable to participate because of a lower body injury. The Wheat Kings were #3 in the latest Canadian Hockey League Top-10 rankings, maintaining the same spot as they were a week ago. Brandon has been ranked in the CHL Top-10 for all 21 weeks they’ve been released this season, and trail the OHL’s Oshawa Generals and the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets in the current rankings. PLAYER NOTES F Tim McGauley is having a remarkable third season with the Wheat Kings in 2014-2015. McGauley brings a 14-game point scoring streak into Friday contest, having amassed nine goals and 30 points during the streak. McGauley ranks in the Top-10 in the WHL in several offensive categories including goals (34, T-5th), assists (46, T-5th), points (80, 3rd), plus/minus (+33, T-7th), game-winning goals (8, T-3rd), shorthanded goals (3, T-4th) and first goals (7, T-2nd). A strong finish could put McGauley into select company as just the third Brandon player in the last 15 seasons to reach 100 points, joining Mark Stone (2010-11 and 2011-12) and Eric Fehr (2004-2015). Four members of the Wheat Kings were listed in the NHL Central Scouting Service’s midterm rankings last month. Ivan Provorov was #10, Ryan Pilon #31 and Rihards Bukarts #190 among North American skaters while Jordan Papirny was ranked 25th among North American goaltenders. Provorov and Pilon both played in the CHL Top Prospects Game last month in St. Catherines, Ontario. Brandon has had at least one player selected in the NHL Draft for ten consecutive years, the 2nd-longest streak in the WHL. 5th-year Brandon defenceman Eric Roy is on the verge of reaching another milestone this weekend. Roy has played 308 career games for 7 thplace on the all-time list, one behind Dale McMullin, two behind Aaron Goldade and three behind Tim Konsorada on Brandon’s all-time list. Roy has also moved into 6th-place all-time in defenceman scoring with 185 points. Roy’s 138 assists is 7th all-time, eight behind three players (Ryan Pulock, Justin Kurtz and Don Dietrich) for 4th all-time among blueliners while his 47 goals is tied with Bob Woods for 7th alltime, one behind Cam Plante and Burke Henry. MILESTONES D Reid Gow scored his first goal as a Wheat King in last Sunday’s win over Prince Albert… F John Quenneville is one goal shy of 50 for his career… Last month, Kelly McCrimmon became the 14th coach in WHL history to reach 400 career wins, and is four wins shy of Marcel Comeau for 13th-place on the all-time list…
