PS 145M School Leadership Team (SLT) Meeting Notes: 2/14/18 In Attendance: Dr. Natalia Russo (Principal - CSA Rep) Mrs. Lorenzi-Morales (Chairperson) Mr. Michael Luongo (Teacher, Note Taker) Mr. Mark Basta (Teacher - Special Education) Ms. Leyda Cruz (DC 37) Ms. Yassiel Nieves (Parents Association President) Ms. Noreen Sadiq (Parent At Large) Ms. Veronica Lewis (Parent At Large) Mr. Leung (Technology Coordinator) Representatives from the Famous Food Festival: Dylan Ross & Eric Arshravan I.

Dr. Russo, Dylan Ross and Eric Arshravan   

Introduced the idea of the Farmers Market /Grand Bazaar in the schoolyard, like the one on 77th Street. It brings a wider food experience to the local community. Dylan Ross and Eric Arshravan (Representatives from the Famous Food Festival) provided an overview of their proposal. They already have a successful partnership with Tanger Outlets in Deer Park and are trying to grow a market here. There are vendors at the event with foods from around the world. There is something for everyone. There are many ways to incorporate our school into the event. The students could grow their own plants during fall spring and then sell them at the festival. We mostly focus on unique food vendors representing food from around the world. There is a high traffic area here. Dylan and Eric are confident that we could gain some good sponsorship for Saturday and Sunday markets with a 12-week duration. We could start with one day per weekend and make it weekly. It is a summer thing, and perhaps if could run it into October. They explained that through the breakdown of revenues it is more cost effective to do both weekend days. They presented two day and one-day options; we would compare each and see which makes more sense. They presented a map of what they envision, expecting to average 30-35 vendors. They created two budgets; for one a weekend or a twelve-week period. It does not cost the school anything to do this. They donate a portion of the revenues to school...we would get 2 benefits: community togetherness and revenue for the general school fund. They get 30% of the vendor revenues. We get 50% of anything left over from that. We have to work it out. The bazaar is free to attend. There is usually a large traffic flow. Our school has a good space. It is perfectly situated. We could also offer an additional indoor option. All food would be maxed at $5.00-$6.00 price point. We get all kinds donations or monetary sponsorship, or on site experience. They take care of all permits, fire department and police; 2 fire extinguishers per booth. They

had 40 volunteers from middle schools and high schools in 2 separate sessions on the last event. They get service credit, leadership experience. The volunteers help the vendors; they are fed; an insurance policy covers them as well. Dylan and Eric went over the costs for a low-end of 40 vendors, 30 food outside, 10 (no food) inside. They are looking to develop long-term partnerships. The budget for one day is $8,400.00. It is $14,000.00 for 2 days. The bazaar runs from 10:00 a.m.- 6:00-6:30 p.m.

Dr. Russo      

Dr Russo’s Concerns regarding the bazaar: The playground situation with renovations; no construction date yet 1 day vs. 2 days: we’d lean toward to the day that 77th street doesn’t have their event three months set up time: marketing, vendors, looking at June 2 or June 9; 12 week program gets us to 8/15 or 8/25 It could go through October; perhaps celebrating Oktoberfest. We could have a special event closing down the street for the grand opening. They get the permits to close the street. the vision for indoor spaces: getting handmade high quality vendors, art, antiques, appeal to local community, to make it a great mix

III. January SLT Minutes 

We approved the January SLT minutes.

The math curriculum maps are updated. Curriculum mapping takes place 3x /year. The Saturday Academy has 6 teachers and it is in full swing. We have 70 students with better attendance than last year. The focus is math. The baseline assessment is a dry run rehearsal for ELA and Math after the break for groupings and modifications. Mark Brown, famous children's author of the Arthur series, went to Ms. Iglesias' class. It was exciting. John continues math development with the staff to increase fluency and numeracy. Ethan brown placed 4th in the district in spelling bee...over 40 students competed. We hosted Grandparents Day on the 100th day of school. It went nicely. It was a regular day of classroom instruction. They had an opportunity to see what life is like here. Dr. Russo and Miss Kim went to a math professional development to think about math not in an algorithmic way, but more so getting them to think of math as a puzzle and struggle through it first and then develop strategies. Mr. Borror hosted Hoops for Heart today. It was fun. Mr. Hunter has started a dance troop with select kids from tryouts. They dance every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Ms. Lorenzi and Ms. Borror went with Dr. Russo to The Manhattan School for children to take a look “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” ~ Henry Ford

at student-led parent teacher conferences. This March, our 3rd and 4th grade students are piloting student-led conferences. A portion of the parent teacher conference will be student-led. Students will discuss their goals, strengths and areas of need. By next November, our entire school will do a portion of student-led conferences. By March 2019 our conferences will be student-led school wide.

V. Ms. Lorenzi 

Our students are being trained to talk about rubrics; what they are struggling with, what they are best at. The lower grades have picture rubrics; the upper have scripted speeches answering those questions to present to the parents. Some of us are teaching the kids to talk about the strategies they know and don’t know. This is especially important for shy students. The training occurs within every day lessons. They are learning how to talk to the parents about setting goals for themselves. It also prepares the students for middle school interviews. Those conversations are important.

VI. Dr. Russo 

Principal Lowentstein said that at first this conference method was a challenge for parents, but through time they grew to appreciate it. Our students have already been using rubrics, which will help. We are not totally sure we want to commit to another two years of YMCA. Another vendor is coming in tomorrow. They charge a fee. We will look into ways to subsidize it. We need an after school program for Pre-K. YMCA does not do Pre-K. The Leader in Me program has closed it to new schools but as of this morning they want to possibly bring us on board; we will see where it goes.

VII. Ms. Nieves  

We hosted the grandparents breakfast and light bake sale. We need to delegate the work more.

Another PA parent team member will be chosen tomorrow.

VIII. Ms. Lorenzi  

The Math and ELA mapping are done. Grades 3,4,5, have test-related work embedded in the math lessons, so it’s not just test prep. We have begun 8 minutes a day to exercise after the announcements...exercise through true/false questioning, math operations, nature walk, etc. The 4th and 5th grade teachers continue to teach Word Gen. It is highly pushed by the superintendent.

IX. Mr. Basta  

Word Gen comes with a workbook. Students can see the words in Spanish, too. We’re seeing students using certain Word Gen vocabulary words for the week, with activities such as a newscast report with the words embedded in the presentation. A student script play utilizing the 6 words, and a journal that they read from a person in the 1700s and a follow-up history story from a time period incorporating the words into the lessons. Word Gen inspires “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” ~ Henry Ford

discussions, gets students to think about the weekly vocabulary words, and to use them in their everyday lives.

X. Ms. Lorenzi  

The 3rd and 4th graders were assessed for math and reading in the lab with Mr. Leung. The dual language program may participate in a spelling bee in May. Miss Schacter has been working with a backstage crew, creating backgrounds for any events we will have. Miss Matthews is assisting Ms. Lorenzi. The dual language program will try to have a fundraiser before the end of the school year. Ms. Lorenzi and Marina have applied for a grant from Helen Rosenthal's office. They are requesting tablets and laptops for students to learn more in the targeted languages. Data inquiry meetings continue. We are in cycle three for reading, writing and math.

Regarding our progress toward the CEP goals:

Goal 1: Addresses the curriculum maps. By Saturday, we will have met that goal. Action Plan: -academic intervention specialist -inter-visitations -professional developments through John Christiansen and Mady Holtzman -parental involvement workshops with Mr. Salamanca every week -promotion in doubt discussions Goal 2: There will be a decrease in infractions as a result of the School Comfort Dog Program. As of January 9, we have only had one level 3 incident in grades K-2. The goal was a whole school general goal. We are on pace now that we are expanding to grades 3-5. Action Plan: -creating a Lux schedule for classes in more need to try to help them increase their sensibility -Blue Ribbon Challenge, a school wide attendance initiative -supplementary activities and the YMCA after school program -Mr. Borror runs a morning basketball program as leverage to manage children's behavior throughout the day. They sign a behavior agreement. -We have created a dance troop and the back stagers group. These are all programs that hold children accountable for their behavior. This should reduce the number of infractions and to help improve attendance, which is up from 89.2 to 89.7.
