PS 145 M. School Leadership Team (SLT) Meeting Notes: 9/28/17
In Attendance: Mrs. Sonia Lorenzi-Morales (SLT Chairperson) Ms. Jayne Figuera (UFT) Mr. Michael Luongo (Teacher/Note Taker) Mr. Mark Basta (Teacher) Ms. Leyda Cruz (DC37) Ms. Noreen Sadiq (Parent) Ms. Veronica Lewis (Parent) Ms. Araceli Flores (Parents Association) Mr. Marcello De Bernardo (Parent)
I. Mrs. Lorenzi-Morales: She welcomed back the team. She read the agenda sheet to us. She then reviewed the “School Leadership Teams SLT Overview” brochure with us. We are looking over June’s notes. We need clarification on our meeting dates. The dates we established in June do not match some of the dates listed on our website. We need that confirmation for the next meetings in February, March, May and June. Ms. Lorenzi reviewed the ten questions on the “Frequently Asked Questions for School Leadership Teams” form. She explained that we have to have equal representation on both sides. Ms. Lorenzi presented Dr. Russo’s update. Seven staff members either retired or left. We have filled those positions. Mr. Martinez retired and Ms. Bibergal has taken over the position. Ms. Lorenzi is prepping Social Studies in grades 2-5 and coordinating the Spanish Dual Language program. Ms. Marina is here a couple of days a week. She is the Russian Dual Language Program Coordinator. Ms. Lorenzi described what she does in her position. Ms. Bibergal then arrived and introduced herself to us. She gave an overview of her position. She next explained that we have switched to an eight period day. She explained how we now have six weekly preps. Mondays: K-2 have 2 periods together (for data work meetings with Dr. Russo or a PD person for training). The following Monday they meet together. The upper grades do it on Wednesdays. A period is now 40 minutes long; lunch is 50 minutes long. “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Late children are directed to the office to receive a late pass. This year, schools are required to post the attendance rate and the lateness rate. Birthday parties are now only permitted as one whole class party on the last Friday of the month in the cafeteria. We will be adding sports in the morning as an incentive with Champs to come encourage students to come to school on time. She explained the 4R’s program and how it worked so well; we are continuing it with the 3rd grade. The 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are all doing it because we have 4th and 5th grade teachers who were already trained in the program. The Comfort Dog Program (Lux) is here. We will be following the program’s curriculum for grades K-2. We perused the new PS145M school app.
II. Mr. Leung: Mr. Leung entered the room. Ms. Lorenzi asked him to explain the data sheets. He said proficient means “on level”. He compared us to the city scores and explained the data to us. ELA: 2015=15% on level 2016=21% on level 2017=25% on level Math: 2015=7% on level 2016=10% on level 2017=28% on level III. Team Discussion: We discussed the importance of elections for the PA to bring another member into the SLT. PS 145 has 6 members; the PA has five. They need one more. We wrote our bylaws on 2016 so they are good for this year. Members are permitted a maximum of 2 absences. After two absences, they are replaced. Leyda Cruz: Timekeeper Jayne Figuera: Co-Chair Michael Luongo: Secretary We received and reviewed the Chancellor’s SLT SUMMARY OF CHANGES form. We next reviewed the Suggested Calendar of Events “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” ~ Henry Ford

Ms. Aracelis will speak to Ms.Nieves so we can have our SLT ready for the October 19th meeting. We all need to be at every meeting to move forward. Ms. Lorenzi will choose items from the suggested calendar of events for our next meeting. She will ask Dr. Russo to inform us of the goals of the CEP. She then shared the Community School District 3 leadership TEMA minutes. The common core in no longer known as such. Now it is known as the “New Generation Learning Standards”. Now they test only 2 days for math and ELA. Another change is that children are expected to read a variety of texts instead of reading grade-level texts. The UFT Parent Conference is on October 21 from 8am-4pm. Lastly, there are acronyms of words that we may come upon in our meetings like ATS. We discussed the acronyms. We have curriculum calendars for each dual language program. We are using Espredita for spanish day in lieu of Fundations. The russian dual language program is using their phonics program on russian day.
IV. Ms. Figuera: We are using the June F&P for starters. Fundations is in place for grades K-2. Additional materials have arrived. School spirit day is tomorrow. AIS, OT, PT and Speech and Language are up and running in place. The lower grades have been receiving supports for guided reading. V. Other Notes: The final school dance performance for this year is scheduled for Wednesday, 6/20/18 with a rain date of 6/21/18. Our final Awards Assembly for the 2017-2018 school year will take place on the evening of Tuesday, June 19, 2017 for grades K-4. We planned the proposed dates for this year’s SLT meetings.
