Hello and welcome to week 18 of your CSA! It’s officially Autumn and wow did the weather change with season. Next week looks a little warmer but we have another wet spell coming. We are having some issues with bacteria and fungus growing on almost everything from all the rain. The broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts all have black spots all over them. The soil and foliage hasn’t had a chance to dry off for more than a day over the last week or two. This makes them good candidates for bacterial diseases and fungus issues. We are still getting to harvest those vegetables but they are not looking their best or lasting very long in storage once picked. They are so saturated with water they just want to rot once picked or in the case of broccoli, rotting right on the plant before we even harvest. The Brussels sprouts are not pretty but a quick stem trim and the outer leaves fall off. That makes it look much better. We wanted to put in one more week of tomatoes but the tomato hornworms exploded this last week without us even knowing it. When we went in to harvest, the majority of ripe tomatoes and a bunch of green ones had huge bites out of them and the plants have been defoliated. These hornworms are big and beautiful especially once they are in moth form but they do so much damage to the fruit and plants. Check out the pics on the next page of a normal looking hornworm and then one we found covered in parasitic wasps. It’s kinda cool. We are finding the wasp all over the hoophouse killing off the hornworms. Mother Nature can be on our side sometimes. There are only two boxes left this season after this week. We will send out an email about storage shares when we have most of the crops harvested this fall. It’s usually mid to late October. We hope you can make it to the farm party on Sunday! We will have a couple crockpots of leek and potato soup with plenty of bread so you can stay warm if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Bring a dish to pass, take a tour, have a drink, and see where all the food has been coming from. Have a great weekend and enjoy your veggies. Sprouting Acres mailing address: 116 N. The pink round root veggies are scarlet queen turnips. They are good thin sliced in salads or glazed with butter and honey. They can also be roasted with other root veggies. Keep them in a bag and they should last for quite a while. We harvest them all in October and stored them all winter last season. The Napa cabbage should be tightly wrapped and will keep for a while as well. Just peel the outer couple of leaves off if they look dried out. Napa is great in coleslaw, fish tacos, stir fries and in lots of other recipes. The red potatoes this week and for the rest of the season are from Igl Farms up in Antigo. They are huge this year most likely from all the heat and rain. We put them in the mesh bags so they would dry off after washing and you can leave them in their but it would be best in a dark paper bag for storage.
