Some of the good looking broccoli.

Hello and welcome to week 6 of your Sprouting Acres CSA share. We have been hearing from other farmers that some of the spring crops are doing weird things. We are seeing the same problems at the farm. We had a variety of broccoli that looked good as the head started forming and then they ripened unevenly with half of the head looking yellow. They still taste good but just don’t look right. So, to avoid losing a whole crop to disease or some other weird problem at harvest, we try hard to always plant at least two different varieties of the same crop each time we plant. The other variety did not have any problems other than being little bit smaller so it paid off and you will see that variety this week. That being said, we have had a few failures that we are not happy about. We lost hundreds of lettuce heads to deer, the Napa cabbage all bolted (going to flower instead of making heads, which never happens early), the peas are not doing as well as we thought they should are could be doing, and we just want the summer crops to start sizing up. We know the early boxes were a bit light but don’t forget, you get the bounty when we have it and we are getting close. We are heavy on broccoli, we started pulling out a huge garlic variety today, the zucchini is starting to plump up and cucumbers are climbing and we sampled a couple that were ready this week. The tomatoes are green and the plants are growing fast. The food is coming; it’s just taking a little extra time this year. Hold tight. The fall crops that we seeded last week are up out of their little trays and cruising right along. We have one more seeding to do this week in the greenhouse and then a couple more lettuce plantings till we just can’t transplant anymore. We do direct seed a lot of fall root crops that we are doing soon as well. We will plant turnips, purple daikon and white daikon radish, more red radishes, spinach, lettuce mix, carrots and more. The fields are in a transition period right now with many early spring beds getting tilled, fertilized and replanted. We finished our 18x44 foot hoophouse that will house our Kubota tractor, walk behind tiller, weed-wacker, all our tools, and our harvest crates. We don’t have a proper equipment shed so we made due with what we had. It feels very roomy and doesn’t look too bad. We start filling it on Friday and hope to have most of the equipment put away by next week. From one project to another, it never ends! Have a great weekend and enjoy your veggies. If you have stalks of garlic that you want to save, leave them out on the counter and let them dry. It should only take a couple weeks. Then when it is dry, put it somewhere dry and dark till you need it.
