A NOTE FROM OUR RECTOR
Dear Friends, I am excited about the start of the Sunday school year this week. Children will meet as usual, Lauren Topping will begin her work with our "tweens," Kelsey Wofford will be meeting and greeting with our youth group, and all adults are invited to the Bracewell Room in order to begin our 4 weeks of learning from and about one another.
Here's an overview of those session:
August 27 - I'll give you the basics of who I am, where I've come from, and how I got here. I know that a number of you have heard bits and pieces of my story, but I think it's important for you to understand a bit more about me as we move forward in mission.
September 3 - Diocesan Canon for Mission and Lay Ministry, Beverly Hurley Hill, will join us to discuss what the Diocese of East Tennessee is doing to empower laity for mission and ministry.
September 10 - I'm hoping to hear your stories. What brought you to St. Peter's, and what keeps you here? What are you most excited about in life and in ministry? Please come with your stories and questions - to share with me and with one another.
September 17 - We'll explore where we're going from here. We'll brainstorm ideas and dreams for the coming months and years. We'll spend some time listening for God's voice in the scriptures, in our own hearts, and in all of our many, varied voices.
I hope to see you there! God bless, Fr. Quinn+
PARISH NEWS
Sign-up Sheets in Bracewell Room Rally Day Sign-up Sheets for individual ministries will be available in the Bracewell Room for the next 4 weeks. Please take a look and sign up for new ministry opportunities and for those in which you wish to continue to participate.
The Caregivers Support Group Caregivers will sponsor a Q & A session on keeping our brains healthy with special guest, Jane Ketchum, former Director of the Geriatric Psychiatric Program at Erlanger. The group will also discuss handling the holidays. You do not have to be a caregiver to attend. Join the discussion on Monday, September 11, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm in the Connor Library.
Book Share Returns We're bringing back the Book Share! If you are looking for something to read, check out the bookshelves in the Book Study classroom (outside the Bracewell Room, next to the Bride’s Room). Simply take a book or leave a book. No need to check it out. Bring it back or not. Just enjoy! We still have room for a few more books, so if you have appropriate books you would like to share with others, just add them to the shelves.
And Speaking of Books… St. Peter’s parishioners donated $2,794 to the recent Book Drive for the school. St. Peter’s School is very appreciative of your generosity!
News from CREATE During the month of August, CREATE requests donations of cotton underwear and white socks for Adult men and women. Please leave your donations on the bench inside the Bracewell Room.
Blessing of the Animals Mark your calendars! Our St. Francis Celebration will take place on Sunday, October 1, at 4:30 pm. A brief prayer service will include pet blessings. A cookout and fellowship time will follow. The parishioners of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church will be our guests.
Education for Ministry (EfM) EfM is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the Bible, church history, and Christian theology all in the context of a prayerful, intentional community. If that sounds interesting to you please be in touch with Fr. Quinn for information about the program and possibilities for a group at St. Peter's.
Request for Transportation A young man has requested a ride to St. Peter’s on Sunday mornings. He lives on East 16th Street downtown. Please call the Parish Administrator at 423-877-2428.
A Message from the Flower Guild Just a reminder that many Sundays are still available this year if you would like to dedicate flowers for the altar in memory of a deceased loved one, in celebration of a special event, or in thanksgiving for a friend or family member. Check the poster in the Bracewell Room for openings. You may pick up a flower donation form in the church office or contact the Parish Administrator by phone or email. Please specify the date you prefer and whether you would like specific flowers or colors represented. The minimum donation is $35. Make checks payable to St. Peter’s Church and drop in the offering plate, bring by the church office, or mail.
DIOCESAN NEWS
Pilgrimage with Bishop George and AMRT: September 13, 2017 Each year, the Appalachian Ministry Resource Team (AMRT) selects ministries or nonprofits in East Tennessee for a pilgrimage visit with the bishop. This year, we’ll be visiting ministries in Knoxville, Hixson, and Cleveland to learn about valuable work being done in our diocese and share the information with all in the diocese. You are warmly invited to participate! AMRT will make a small support contribution to each ministry visited. After the Pilgrimage, a member of AMRT would love to visit your parish to report on the pilgrimage and the work of AMRT. On Sept. 13, Knoxville-area folks will depart on the bus from the Diocesan House with Bishop George at 8 a.m. – arriving at Family Promise of Knoxville at 8:20. Folks south of Knoxville are invited to carpool and meet us at 11 a.m. at the Hosanna Community in Hixson. Our last stop before lunch will be The Refuge in Cleveland, at 12:20 p.m. We’ll have lunch together at 1:10 at the Farmhouse Restaurant in Cleveland before heading home. The Knoxville bus will arrive back at the Diocesan House around 4:15 p.m. Note that all times are approximate. See Events at http://dioet.org for details. Space on the bus is limited to 18! Reserve your seat by contacting Eric Haralson, AMRT Chair, at
[email protected] or 865-806-3505. Contact Eric if you would like an AMRT member to visit your parish.

Bishop’s Gift Beloved in Christ, We have been blessed and privileged to have the Rt. Rev. George D. Young, III as our bishop. Under his tenure, the diocese has flourished. Alas, now we must say goodbye. It is customary, when a diocesan bishop retires, to collect a Voluntary Gift as a love offering to the departing bishop. We, the Standing Committee, are writing to you to ask you for a monetary gift for this Voluntary Gift for the bishop. And we are asking you, laity and clergy, to be as generous with this gift as Bishop Young has been with us personally and professionally. It would be our privilege, as
a diocese, to give Bishop Young a super Voluntary Gift upon the occasion of his retirement. Help us bless the lives of the bishop and Kammy! It is planned that we give the gift to the bishop and Kammy on the occasion of the celebration of the bishop’s ministry at Grace Point on Saturday, 28 October, 2017. If you wish to be part of this wonderful project, please send your checks, endorsed to the Diocese of East Tennessee, to:
The Diocese of East Tennessee 814 Episcopal School Way Knoxville, TN 37932
Please also put “for the Bishop’s Voluntary Gift” in the note line. Please note also that, as a personal gift, this donation is not tax deductible. If you have questions, please feel free to call me at 423-276-5045.
In Christ, The Rev. Edward J. Mills III President, The Standing Committee
