This week’s Utah hike

BY STEVE BAKER Clipper Staff Writer

South Willow Lake Trail, Tooele Co. The trail starts at the top of Loop Campground and restrooms. You enter a canopy of conifers as you make your way to a dry creek bed and the junction for South Willow Lake. After crossing the creek, watch for the trail post on the other side for the lake trail. The shade starts disappearing as the trail opens to views of Deseret Peak in front of you. Around 1.5 miles into your hike you cross two streams and the trail turns north to the first ridgeline. At this ridgeline you’re two miles into your hike. You’re rewarded with awesome views of the Oquirrh Mountains to the east and the Wasatch mountains in the distance. After taking the views in, continue on to the next junction, “Pocket Fork.” Stay right for the lake. The trail continues to climb for the next ridge above “Mining Fork.” As you descend into Mining Fork, you arrive at the last trail post. Stay climbing for the lake. The last mile is the steepest as you make your way toward the rock wall and base of South Willow Lake. Kick back and take in your hidden treasure.
