SUBJECT:
Electrical Outage on December 30, 2017
On Saturday, December 30, 2017, at 12:49 AM, an outage affected electric services in town and north of Ketchikan. This outage was caused when a vehicle struck a pole near mile 4.3 South Tongass Highway. The event caused minor pole damage and a momentary "phase-to-phase" fault which was sensed by protective relaying; this opened the 34.5kV Mountain Point North and Ketchikan South Tie Breakers. The sudden loss of approximately 4.6 MW of generation triggered a load-shed event causing two (2) KPU system feeders to open resulting in a power outage. KPU crews and operators quickly identified the issue and began power restoration. 1,305 customers were affected by the outage and power was restored all within 23 minutes.

SUBJECT:
Electrical Outage on 12/3112017
On Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 6:54AM, an outage affected system-wide electric services caused by a loss of generation from Southeastern Alaska Power Agency (SEAPA). This was caused by a system failure within Unit 1 at the Tyee Powerplant. The event created a sudden loss of approximately 7.0 MW of generation, system instability, and a load-shed event causing five (5) KPU system feeders to open resulting in a power outage. KPU personnel and operators quickly identified the issue and began power restoration. 2,680 customers were affected by the outage and power was restored to all within 32 minutes.
