Trailing 15-7 in the final minutes of the game, Cal U capped a gametying 61-yard scoring drive to even the game with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation. The drive culminated with a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Portis to wide receiver Chedrick Cherry that cut the deficit to 15-13. On the ensuing PAT attempt, Portis again found Cherry in the end zone to even the score and force overtime.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS: Edinboro returns 34 lettermen and 15 starters from last year’s team that finished 9-4 overall after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Playoffs. After the conclusion of his brother’s (Trevor) record-setting career, Cody Harris has completed over 65 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and three interceptions as a redshirt freshman. Senior wide receiver Gary Nolen has been the Harris’ primary target, leading the team with 43 receptions for 426 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, redshirt freshmen Drew Herrell and D’Andrea Vaughn have combined for over 850 yards and 10 touchdowns. Herrell was named the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week after setting a season-high with 197 yards in the win at Lock Haven. The Fighting Scots feature one of the top scoring and rushing defenses in the PSAC behind the play of brothers Dan Skelton (senior defensive back) and Ryan Skelton (junior linebacker). Combined, the Skelton brothers have totaled 136 tackles (73 solo) and 8.5 TFL with Dan Skelton tied for the team lead with four interceptions. On the defensive front, junior defensive ends James Thomas and Keir Jeter have totaled 22.5 TFL and 7.5 sacks. Junior punter Ryan Genco ranks fourth in the PSAC with an average of 37.7 yards on 43 punts. As a specialist, Nolen is among the league leaders at 20.8 yards per kickoff return. Junior Alex Romanias is in his third year as the kicker for Edinboro and has made 20-of-34 field goals in his career, but is just 6-of-15 this season. ROAD WARRIORS: Since the start of the 2007 season, the Vulcans have posted an impressive 20-4 record (.833) in road games. During that stretch, Cal U has won 18 of 20 regular season games away from Adamson Stadium with the only losses coming at Bloomsburg in 2008 and Mercyhurst two weeks ago. The Vulcans have not last back-to-back road games since the 2006 season when they lost at Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg. LAST CHANCE: For Cal U to advance to its third-straight PSAC Championship, it needs a win over Edinboro and Clarion to upset PSAC West front-runner Mercyhurst. If the Vulcans and Lakers both win, Mercyhurst would make its first-ever appearance in the “State Game” by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker. The last team from either division to appear in three-consecutive PSAC Championships was IUP from 1985-87 before the game was suspended until the 2008 season. SWEET NOVEMBER: Cal U has won 10 of its last 11 games in November since the start of the 2007 season. In the previous decade from 1997-2006, the Vulcans struggled down the stretch of the season by posting only a 6-14 record (.300). WINNING WAYS: Cal U has won 60 of its last 71 games (.845) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 40-5 (.889) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.

GAME NOTES GRAND MARK: Sophomore running back Lamont Smith has now rushed for 1,021 yards following last weekend’s game against IUP, becoming the fourth different Vulcan to rush for 1,000 yards in the last seven years. Currently, he ranks second in the PSAC behind Bloomsburg’s Franklyn Quiteh, who leads NCAA Division II at 160.4 yards per game. Smith rushed for a season-low 57 yards on 20 carries last week after missing the Mercyhurst game due to injury. MR. OVERTIME: Senior Marc Domonkos has made a critical kick in overtime two times this season to clinch a victory for the Vulcans. Last week, he made the eventual game-winning 17-yard field goal in overtime against the Crimson Hawks. The kick moved him passed Gary Amos (2002-04) for third place all-time with 18 field goals. In the season-opener at Saginaw Valley, Domonkos made the eventual game-winning PAT in overtime after the Cardinals’ kicker missed the PAT attempt in overtime. MOVING OVER: In his three seasons as a starter, senior Dan Jordan has proven to be one of the premier offensive lineman in NCAA Division II. An All-America candidate, Jordan has started 36 games at left guard in his career. However, last week against IUP, the 6-3 senior made his first career start at left tackle. Jordan has now started 25 consecutive games along the offensive line for the Vulcans, the third-longest active streak on the team. ROUGH DIAMOND: In each of last two weeks, junior linebacker Brett Diamond has registered a career high with 10 tackles after making only 26 tackles in the first seven weeks. An All-PSAC West selection last year, the Virginia native ranks second on the team with 46 stops (20 solo) and also is among the team leaders with 7.0 TFL and 3.0 sacks. In three years as a starter, Diamond is the team’s active leader with 153 career tackles (82 solo) and also has five career interceptions. NEW STARTER: Last week, senior Tommie Campbell became only the 13th different player to start for the Vulcans on defense this year. Campbell is second on the team among cornerbacks with 21 tackles (14 solo) and also has two pass break-ups. A former two-year player at Pitt (2005-06), the Aliquippa native then played at Edinboro in 2007 and finished with 27 stops (19 solo) and 335 yards as a kick returner. HITTING THE BOOKS: Seniors Sam Fikaris and Dan Jordan were selected to the ESPN Academic All-District II Teams this week. Jordan has started all nine games this season on the offensive line and received first-team academic all-district honors for the thirdstraight season. Fikaris earned second-team status after posting 19 tackles (11 solo) with 5.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks. The Vulcans have had a pair of Academic All-Americans, but none since the 2006 season. POSITIVE SIGNS: This weekend’s match-up features two of the best teams in the PSAC and the country in terms of turnover margin. Edinboro leads the league and is sixth in the nation with a +13 after forcing 23 turnovers (nine fumbles, 14 interceptions) and losing only 10 turnovers (seven fumbles, three interceptions). Meanwhile, Cal U is third in the PSAC and 14th in the country at +11 after recording 22 turnovers (seven fumbles, 15 interceptions) and committing 11 turnovers (five fumbles, six interceptions).
