PLAYING THE BEST: This weekend’s game against West Chester marks the fifth game for Cal U against a Top 25 team in 2008. The Vulcans hold a 4-1 mark against nationally-ranked teams this season, including a pair of wins at Adamson Stadium. READING THE POLLS: The Vulcans are in the top 10 of the AFCA poll for the eighth time this season (six straight). More importantly, Cal U moved to No. 1 in the latest NCAA “Super Regional One” poll after West Chester upset Bloomsburg last week. The top two teams in the region will receive a bye in the NCAA Playoffs. The No. 3 and No. 4 teams in the region will receive a first-round game on Nov. 15. In addition to the top spot in “Super Regional One,” the Vulcans also moved up to No. 1 in the latest ECAC Lambert Meadowlands Division II poll. THEN THERE WAS ONE: For the first time since the 1987 season, the PSAC will recognize an outright conference champion. The PSAC formerly played the “State Game” in football from 1960-1987 before the league determined to place more emphasis on access into the NCAA playoffs. Cal U played in a the PSAC Championship games in both 1968 and 1984. The Vulcans played East Stroudsburg to a 28-28 tie in 1968 before registering a 21-14 win over Bloomsburg in 1984. The 2008 campaign marks the 75th year since the PSAC has crowned a champion in football, dating back to 1934.

GAME NOTES SEEING DOUBLE: Not since the Reagan Administration have the Vulcans faced a team two times in one season. Cal U last played an opponent twice in 1984, defeating Bloomsburg twice after posting a 21-14 victory in the “State Game.” However, prior to that contest the last time Cal U faced a team twice in one year was in 1921 when President Woodrow Wilson was in the White House. The Vulcans are hosting West Chester this weekend in the PSAC Championship game after claiming a 44-32 win over the Golden Rams in the season-opener. SOMETHING SPECIAL: Cal U continues to feature one of the best special teams units in the country, ranking among the top 20 in three major categories: net punting, kickoff returns and punt returns. The Vulcans lead the country in net punting at 39.66 yards per punt and rank fourth with 26.4 yards per kickoff return. HITTING THE BOOKS AND THE OPPOSITION: Sophomore offensive lineman Dan Jordan was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team on Thursday. He is now on the ballot to receive Academic All-America honors. Jordan has started all 10 games this season at left guard for the Vulcans. WELCOME BACK FSN: Cal U is making its fourth appearance on FSN Pittsburgh in 2008 this weekend against West Chester. The Vulcans are 3-0 this year on FSN Pittsburgh, claiming wins over the Golden Rams in the season-opener and rivals IUP and Slippery Rock. NOVEMBER REIGN: The Vulcans have won six of their last seven games in the month of November dating back to the 2005 season. Cal U won all three of its November games last season, including a 43-7 win over Southern Connecticut State in the NCAA Playoffs. The only loss for the Vulcans in November since 2005 was a 21-17 thriller against rival IUP. THEY WERE RIGHT: Cal U and West Chester were both the pre-season favorites to win their respective divisions in the PSAC coaches’ poll. The Vulcans returned 11 starters from the 2007 team that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in program history. Meanwhile, the Golden Rams returned seven All-PSAC East selections from a 2007 squad that reached the NCAA Playoffs for a fourth-straight year. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Vulcans boast a perfect 5-0 record at Adamson Stadium this season, tying West Chester for the longest home win streak in the PSAC. Cal U has won nine of its last 10 games at home with the lone loss coming against Valdosta State in last year’s NCAA Semifinals. Since the start of the 2005 season, the Vulcans hold a 23-2 overall record (.920) on the ProGrass of Adamson Stadium. BATTLE OF WASHINGTON-JOHNSON: This weekend All-American wide receiver Michael Washington will likely go against All-PSAC West candidate Terrence Johnson. In the season-opener against West Chester, the Vulcans limited Washington to six receptions and 65 yards - his third lowest total of the year. Johnson leads Cal U and ranks tied for third in the conference with four interceptions to increase his career total to 12. FLIGHT DELAY: The Vulcans rank eighth nationally in passing defense through 10 games this season. Cal U opponents are averaging only 148.8 passing yards per game and completing less than 50 percent of their passes (49.5 percent). The Vulcans have allowed only one opponent to pass for more than 225 yards in a game all year - West Chester (311 yards). Last week, the defense forced a season-high three interceptions, including two in the end zone. CONSTANT BALANCE: Cal U is in the top 25 nationally in three major offensive categories this season. The Vulcans rank No. 20 in rushing offense at 204.6 yards per game despite rushing for a season-low 94 yards last week against Mercyhurst. Against the Golden Rams in late August, Cal U rushed for 220 yards and four touchdowns, while also passing for 297 yards and two scores. With talented depth at both wide receivers and running backs, the Vulcans rank No. 22 in total offense with 436.0 yards per game. EFFICIENT SIGNAL CALLERS MEET AGAIN: The PSAC Conference Championship game features a battle between two of the top quarterbacks in the country. Golden Rams’ quarterback Joe Wright and Vulcans’ signal caller Kevin McCabe rank No. 8 and No. 15 in the quarterback efficiency after throwing for 23 and 21 touchdowns, respectively.

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 6) – After trailing by 14 points at halftime against No. 18 Bloomsburg, the Vulcans rallied to tie the contest at 14-14 before the Huskies scored 10-straight points en route to a 24-17 victory at Redman Stadium. The loss snaps a 12-game regular season winning streak by Cal U. With the constant rainfall due to the path of Tropical Storm Hanna, the play selection for both teams was shifted to the running game. Bloomsburg amassed 325 yards and two touchdowns on 55 carries. Meanwhile, Cal used its trio of running backs to finish the game with 196 rushing yards and one touchdown on 41 attempts. Senior running back Daine Williams paced the Vulcans’ ground game with 90 yards on 17 attempts. The Huskies took a 14-0 lead into halftime after rushing for 220 yards on 31 carries in the opening two quarters. However, the Vulcans answered from a halftime deficit with an impressive third quarter by scoring touchdowns on a 49-yard completion from quarterback Kevin McCabe to wide receiver Marcel Pestano and a 38-yard run by sophomore Windell Brown. Bloomsburg responded with a 35-yard field goal before the Huskies returned a McCabe interception 52 yards to claim a 24-14 lead with only eight second left in the third quarter. The Vulcans were in position to score on their final possession of the game, but were unable to convert fourth-and-15 from the Huskies’ 33-yard line in the final minutes of the game. Sophomore linebacker Guy Hurt led the defense with eight tackles (four solo), while fellow linebacker Jake Howell added seven stops. SCORING SUMMARY 1st 11:55 BU S. Adams 4 yd run (J. CALIFORNIA (Sept. 13) – The No. 16 Vulcans featured six different players that scored touchdowns in a 54-0 victory against Lake Erie. As a team, the Vulcans rushed for 347 yards and five touchdowns on 39 attempts against the Storm. Junior running back Freddie Bacco led all players with a career-high 143 yards and one touchdown on 11 attempts. Senior Brandon Lombardy rushed for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns on six carries. He became just the third player in school history to rush for 3,000-plus yards in a career (3,019). Already leading 14-0, senior Marcel Pestano capped the scoring in the first quarter with a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown. His punt return for a touchdown was the first by a Vulcan since Marc Huddleston returned a punt for a score at Mansfield in 2005 (Sept. 10). Pestano also received one of two touchdown passes by graduate student Kevin McCabe, who completed 11-of-15 attempts for 177 yards with no interceptions while playing just the first half. In addition to the high-scoring offense, the Vulcans were dominant on defense in the first half, allowing Lake Erie to collect only three first downs and 24 yards of total offense. Junior linebacker Matt McClellan led the Vulcans’ defense with seven tackles, 2.0 TFL and 1.5 sacks, while junior defensive lineman Willie Walker registered a team-best 2.0 sacks in the contest.
EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 20) – The No. 14 Vulcans scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter before the defense forced a three-and-out, as the Cal U team edged No. 23 Edinboro, 35-31, at Sox Harrison Stadium in front of over 7,000 fans. Sophomore Windell Brown gave the Vulcans the lead late in the fourth on a four-yard touchdown with 4:54 remaining in the game. After starting the ensuing drive deep in its own territory, Edinboro was forced to punt with 3:20 left in the game. Cal U then collected two first downs before running out the clock. Senior running back Daine Williams led the ground game for Cal U with 140 rushing yards on 17 attempts, while quarterback Kevin McCabe finished the game with 274 passing yards on 18-of-31 attempts with two touchdowns and an interception. After the Vulcans held a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter, the Fighting Scots managed to trim the deficit to 21-17 at halftime. Edinboro claimed its first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the third quarter before Cal U seized control of the game on the Fighting Scots next possession when junior Terrance Johnson recovered a fumble at the Edinboro 29-yard line. Using the short field, Cal regained the lead at 28-24 when McCabe found junior A.J. Jackson for a score. Senior linebacker Jake Howell led the Vulcans with nine tackles (six solo), while fellow linebacker Brent Whiteleather added seven tackles.

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 27) – No. 14 Cal U team managed to hold on to a third-quarter lead to claim a 21-19 victory over rival No. 12 Indiana at Adamson Stadium. The victory marks back-to-back wins by Cal U over IUP for the first time since the 1981-82 seasons. It also snapped a 27-year losing streak to the Crimson Hawks at California. The Vulcans took a 21-6 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter when quarterback Kevin McCabe connected with fullback Shawn Johnson for a three-yard touchdown pass. IUP responded with a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters before the Cal U defense stopped a Crimson Hawk two-point conversion attempt with 5:27 left in the game. Following the Crimson Hawks’ final touchdown, the Vulcans answered with an 11-play drive that covered the final five-plus minutes of the game. Cal U converted a crucial fourth-and-five play from the IUP 20-yard line with McCabe finding freshman wide receiver Josh Gumbert across the middle for a nine-yard gain. McCabe finished the game with 239 passing yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-35 attempts with no interceptions against an IUP defense that entered the game ranked No. 1 in total defense. The Vulcans defense held the Crimson Hawks to only 19 points after IUP entered the game as the top-rated scoring offense and No. 9 in total offense. ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 1) – No. 7 Cal U earned sole possession of the PSAC West title and a berth in the PSAC Championship game with a 17-6 victory over Mercyhurst College at Tullio Field. The Vulcans finished divisional play with a perfect 7-0 mark and will make their first appearance in the “State Game” since 1984. Cal U jumped out to a 17-0 halftime lead before the defense sealed the victory with a pair of second-half interceptions, including an interception in the end zone by outside linebacker Matt McClellan. The Vulcans took an early 3-0 lead before the Cal U offense engineered a methodical 12-play, 96-yard drive capped with a one-yard touchdown run by senior running back Daine Williams. After the defense forced a three-and-out, Cal U expanded its lead to 17-0 with a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin McCabe to junior receiver A.J. Jackson with 7:25 left before halftime. In the opening minutes of the of the third quarter, Cal U appeared ready to cruise to victory when junior cornerback Terrence Johnson returned an interception 36 yards. However, Johnson fumbled the ball and the loose ball was recovered by Mercyhurst at its own 2-yard line. The Lakers moved the ball 98 yards on 16 plays to cut the deficit to 17-6 with a one-yard quarterback sneak to cap a nine-plus minute drive. Mercyhurst mounted lengthy 10-plus drives on its next two possessions, but the Vulcans’ defense stiffened in pivotal spots – forcing an incomplete pass on fourth down from the Cal U 33-yard line and the McClellan interception in the end zone. LAST WEST CHESTER MEETING NO. 5 VULCANS REGISTER 44-32 WIN IN SEASON-OPENER OVER NO. 16 WEST CHESTER CALIFORNIA (Aug. 30) – In their season-opener, the No. 5 Vulcans featured an explosive offense that was led by quarterback Kevin McCabe and receiver Marcel Pestano en route to a 44-32 victory over No. 16 West Chester. McCabe completed 30-of-36 attempts (83.3 percent) for 297 yards with two touchdowns – both to Pestano. The 30 completions by McCabe is the highest single-game total in recent program history. In his first game as a Vulcan, Pestano posted game-high totals of 11 receptions and 112 receiving yards. The 11 catches rank second as the highest single-game total in team history. Cal U amassed a total of 517 yards of total offense against West Chester, including 220 yards on the ground. Senior running back Daine Williams led all players with 102 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns, while classmate Brandon Lombardy finished with 93 yards on 17 attempts and one touchdown. With the Golden Rams leading 19-16 at halftime, the Vulcans seized control of the contest in the second half by scoring 21-straight points in the third quarter with three touchdowns. Cal U engineered an eight-play drive on the opening possession in the second half, capped by a five-yard touchdown plunge by Williams with 11:26 left in the quarter that gave the Vulcans a 23-19 lead.

On the next Cal U possession, Williams increased the lead to 30-19 before sophomore running back Windell Brown added a 19-yard scoring scamper with 32 seconds left in the third quarter to make the score 37-19. The Golden Rams, who were predicted to win the PSAC East in the pre-season conference poll, trimmed the deficit to 37-25 with a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, however, the Vulcans sealed the victory with a seven-yard score by Lombardy with 8:13 left in the game to increase the lead to 44-25. The Vulcans defense limited All-American wide receiver Mike Washington to only 65 yards. Senior free safety Juan Butler paced the Cal defensive unit with seven tackles (six solo) and a fumble recovery. Linebackers Guy Hurt and Jake Howell each added five stops. The Cal U defense held the Golden Rams to only 71 rushing yards and forced three turnovers.
