Phrasal verb A phrasal verb is a verb which has its meaning changed by either adding an extra preposition or adverb.

EG:

“I ran into my ex-boyfriend last night” “We got away with it.”

Some of the particles used in the construction of phrasal verbs have similar meanings which are useful to remember. We will take a look at a few of the following:

The particle ‘off” There are about six uses for the particle ‘off’:

Physical movement

“Take-off” “Lift-off”

To take off, remove

“Take-off you clothes” “Cut-off”

Start something, new action

“Kick-off” “spark-off”

Finish or complete something

“Turn-off” “log-off”

To separate something from another thing or person

“Block-off” “Brush-off”

Get out of something like a car, bus etc.

Get-off” “Drop-off”

The particle ‘Out’ There are about three main uses for the particle ‘Out’:

An outward movement, not inside

“Let’s eat-out this evening”

To leave out, exclude

“Shut-out” “Keep-out”

Doing well/ thoroughly, completing

“Work-out” “Figure-out”

NB: There are many particles that use out! Here are a few to learn:

Throw out, Tire out, Top out, Trot out, Try out, Try out for, Tune out, Turn out, Veg out, Wait out, Walk out, Walk out on, Want out, Wash out, Watch out, Watch out for, Wear out, Weed out, Whip out, White out, Wig out, Wiggle out, Wiggle out of, Wimp out, Winkle out, Wipe out, Work out, Wriggle out of, Write out, Zero out, Zone out, Zoom out English Language

The particle ‘Down’ There are about three main uses for the particle ‘Down’:

Physical movement/ downward

‘Sit-down” “Jump-down”

A decrease

“Turn that down” “Keep it down”

Completing, ending stopping

“Close-down” “cut down on”

NB: There are many phrasal verbs that use the particle down, these are just a few:

down and tell me about your holiday. JILL: Okay, I have so much to tell. Firstly, thank you for giving me time off

work, I had the best holiday ever! JOHN: That is ok, you deserved it. I know you will make it up! So, what did

you do after you packed up here? JILL: Firstly we drove to the airport. We then flew to Spain, which is a very

beautiful country. We were up every morning early to see the sunrise and to have breakfast. Weren’t you down in Spain last year? JOHN: Yes, I was there with my wife. English Language

Title? JILL: Okay, then let me tell you about London. Tim and I hopped on a tour bus and

went to see Big Ben and the London eye, both were great! JOHN: Oh, great, did you go on the London Eye? JILL: Yes. It gave us a fantastic view of London. The only bad thing is when we got back

to the bus Tim’s camera had been stolen. JOHN: Oh that is a shame! I hope it didn’t ruin your holiday... JILL: It’s ok, we are insured! Anyway, the next day Tim and I

decided to split up and do our own thing. He went to the London Museum and I went shopping. JOHN: Oh, you don’t like the museums? JILL: I do, but I knew that if I went shopping with Tim he would

just moan about me spending money! Later in the evening we caught up with each other and had a nice meal. English Language

for them. Oh, I better call the insurance company about Tim’s camera! JOHN: “Good luck with them! I hate insurance companies,
