Reported speech We use reported speech to report what was said at a different time. If the initial verb (e. g. “he said”) is in the past, this requires a tense shift: going back one step towards the past. An exception is made when the fact is still true now.

EG:

I play football

He said that he played football

He is watching TV

He said that he was watching TV

She likes to study English

She said that she likes to study English
