British History The Norman Conquest “The invasion of England in 1066 played a very important part in shaping the England of today. Here is a short history of the events leading to the crowning of King William. King Edward of England, also know as ‘The Confessor’, died on January the 5th 1066 which lead to a three way fight for the crown. Harold Godwinson; advisor to the late Edward, William; Duke of Normandy and Harald Hardrada; King of Norway, all had their own reasons for claiming they were the rightful heir to the throne. Harold Godwinson became King of England the same day they buried King Edward the Confessor. This is when the troubles started!

With Harold now King of England, both William, Duke of Normandy, and Harald, King of Norway decided to invade and fight for their ‘rightful’ position on the throne. Harald arrived first in northern England and invaded York. Knowing this, King Harold sent his army to fight off the invasion, leading not only to a victory, but to the death of Harald! At this stage, Harold’s army was very tired, but it wasn’t over yet! William was also invading, but from the south. Harold rushed his army to meet this new threat and positioned them just 5 miles from Hastings. The fight took all day, but in the end, due to a very tired army, Harold lost, and also fell. William was then crowned King of England on Christmas day 1066. English Language
