GAMMA XI GAB Gamma Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu
With the start of another fall semester there is another new pledge class joining the Chapter. Rush across the campus was difficult this summer due to several fraternities building new houses or renovating their current house. I am happy to announce that the Chapter has rushed 18 strong candidates for the fall semester. Even though the semester is just getting started Greek Week is just around the corner. The Chapter is already hard at work preparing for the 52nd Annual Greek Week. Greek Week is taking place September 12th through September 20th with Opening Games taking place on the 13th and Closing Games the following Sunday. This year the Chapter is happy to announce that ΓΞ 1470 Adam McMikle will be a GOD. During Adam’s time in IFC he held the positions of AFLV, Sales Chairmen, and Vice President of Recruitment. After Greek Week is complete this year the Chapter won’t have much time to rest, as Homecoming 2014 will be less than one month away. Homecoming 2014 will take place over the weekend of October 17th. The Chapter worked hard last year to prepare the house for Homecoming 2013 and we had an amazing turnout of alumni for the 110th Anniversary of the Chapter and the 25th Anniversary of the house. We are hoping for another strong turnout from our alumni for Homecoming 2014 so that we can continue to build better relations with our alumni chapter. While on the subject of alumni events, Rollafest 2014 was a great success. We had over 40 alumni members in attendance with roughly 10 active members of the Chapter. Seeing everyone come back to Rolla and talk about their time in Sigma Nu really helped me understand that this truly is a lifelong
brotherhood. I hope to see even more alumni over the next year at Homecoming 2014 and St. Pats 2015. This fall we are expecting four of our active members to graduate. Each of them has given something in some way to the chapter that we cannot replace. Whether it be from long hours spent working on perfecting our cudgel, or serving a semester as Commander with all of the trials it brings. I, along with the active chapter, hope the best for all of you in any future endeavors you might undertake. Lastly, thank you to everyone that has supported the active chapter in one way or another over the past years. Your thoughtfulness is not overlooked or forgotten by the members of the active chapter, and we hope that you will continue to support this great chapter so that it can remain strong for decades to come. The Gamma Xi chapter would not be what it is today without the support of our alumni through scholarships, workdays, and housing corp. The chapter will continue to work towards its goals and learn from the accomplishments, and failures, of the past. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me either by email at
[email protected], or by phone at 618-979-3664.

Brothers, The Gamma Xi Chapter is kicking off the new school year working hard to ensure that we continue to pursue excellence. We currently welcome 18 new candidates for this fall semester and plan to initiate three new Brothers at the beginning of the semester. Last spring, we made improvements to our scholarship plan which ended up contributing to our overall 3.0 GPA that we received last semester. Also, we received our Pursuit of Excellence back from Nationals and scored very well in all categories. We received excellence in Recruitment, Manpower, Campus Leadership, Governance, and Accountability. We continue to strive for accountability within our chapter and within our committees. I personally will take responsibility for the success of each committee by meeting with them weekly, and making sure they are on the right track to success. I am extremely excited to hold the position of Lt. Commander of the Gamma Xi chapter this semester and hope to accept nothing but greatness. Feel free to contact me at 314-420-5014 or by email at

With the fall semester of 2014 brings the initiation of 2 Brothers from the previous semester as well as one New Initiate, bringing the total number of Knights of the Gamma Xi Chapter to an astounding 1516. We are proud to have accepted 18 new candidates for this semester who are diverse in knowledge and background and should contribute to what is already a great house. The candidates are hardworking, and eager to prove their worth to become valuable members of Sigma Nu. It is my duty to make sure that each candidate fully completes the Pledging Process in 12 weeks while also excelling in their school work. With the help of my Assistant Marshals and the actives alike, I believe we will be able to mold these candidates into proper gentleman and exhibit the characteristics of a true Sigma Nu.

BROTHERHOOD/PARTICIPATION CHAIRMAN Brothers, The current active chapter is excited to get the ball rolling for this fall semester. Brotherhood is still one of our strongest values held among the chapter and I will surely keep that going. On Tuesdays a reoccurring bowling night and Thursday poker nights are planned to allow all members to bolster our brotherly love. The Gamma Xi chapter looks to continue our intramural success with softball nearly underway, as well as football and volleyball coming shortly after. A brotherhood retreat is being planned for October to provide an entire house gathering away from Rolla. The house will also be going all out for the 52nd in idiodyssey events, and winning opening/closing games should help the new members fit into our everlasting friendship. Homecoming is also on the horizon and we hope to see a solid number of you to come out and help us celebrate just as we did last year. If you have any new ideas to add or questions about any of the large events this semester please do not hesitate to contact me. Fraternally, Tyler Herrell –

RUSH The Gamma Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu welcomes 18 new candidates this semester, with a few pending candidates. We also had 1 candidate rush during the spring semester. My fellow recruitment chairmen and I spent the summer actively searching for top-quality men to become the next generation of Sigma Nu brothers. We did this by getting to know the candidates at many events such as paintballing, Cardinals Games, a trip to Fairmount Park, a float trip, and a trip to the Offsets. Once the summer rush season is over we plan on making improvements to our utilities such as the booth that we set up on pro days. We feel that this and some other changes will help raise student awareness of Sigma Nu during summer rush next year and beyond. We look forward to showing more students the values of Sigma Nu through these opportunities. For more information on our recruitment initiatives or with any questions/comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me at

Patio of Honor Greetings Brothers of Gamma Xi. As the chapter continues to grow, so does its history. We would like to give you the opportunity to not only leave a piece of your time here with the house, but to also help provide for the future of the house. The Patio of Honor continues to expand and it would be our pleasure to have you as our next honoree! Each commemorative brick is engraved with your name and initiation number and is placed alongside of the those of your brothers. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer the cast aluminum star due to issues with our supplier. For a minimum donation of $75 you can have a brick created with your name and initiation number engraved on the front. The money will go towards the cost of the brick materials, as well as improvements to the house. We greatly appreciate your help to continually making Sigma Nu the best house on campus. SCHOLARSHIP NEWS Brothers, This year the Gamma Xi chapter has reached a GPA of 3.00 which is a 0.145 point increase in GPA from the previous fall semester. Only 4 members did not attain the 2.5 GPA requirement; therefore, completing our goals set in the spring. Our current ranking in the Greek Community for academics is 13th. This semester I will be continuing the incentives that have been successful for previous Scholarship Chairmen as well as making these awards more clearly communicated to members. As a house, our goal is to have all members achieve the GPA requirement and achieve a total GPA of 3.10. We are excited to seeing all of our alumni to celebrate the 111th Homecoming. HOUSING CORPORATION Brothers, After a successful Homecoming last fall, many alumni, actives, and friends gathered in August for Rollafest 2014. With over 40 attending, the group enjoyed a long weekend of fun and brotherhood centered around the chapter house. Gamma Xi Alumni from the ‘60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s participated in the festivities which included a bar hop, golf outing, float trip, tour of the University’s new geothermal system, Lane Springs cook out, and a lot of storytelling. Special thanks go out to Jack “Tiny” Phillips 770 for spearheading this event. The Rollafest 2014 planning committee included Adam French 1142, Darren Peeler 1099, Jim Grelle 818, Vince Grelle 887, Bill Zaner 777, Nick Barrack 794, and Brian Tenholder 1189. Thanks to the Rollafest 2014 committee and the many other brothers who helped out over the weekend. The next Rollafest is planned for 2016. Thanks again to the many alumni who donated their time and money toward preparations for last year’s major Homecoming event. Significant improvements were made to the House prior to the celebration of 25 years on 12th St. and 110 years in Rolla. These upgrades were necessary to modernize our House and keep Gamma Xi competitive with the other fraternities on campus, including many with newer houses and fraternities that have completed major renovations in recent years. Alumni donations help us offset the expenses of these improvements and ensure the continued success of Sigma Nu on campus. If you would like to make a donation, please send your check to Adam French, 1231 Sidney St., St. Louis, MO 63104 payable to Sigma Nu Fraternity. We are always looking for new volunteers to participate on the Housing Corporation. If you are interested, please contact Vince Grelle (
[email protected]). While alumni from all eras are welcome, we would especially like to have some representation from those who were in the house after the year 2000. We hope to see many of you who are returning to Rolla on Oct. 17 & 18 for Homecoming 2014. Fraternally, Your Housing Corporation
