GAMMA XI GAB Gamma Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu

As the 2015 summer is beginning to come to a conclusion, we, the brothers of the Gamma XI chapter, are eager to begin the 2015 fall semester. After holding each other accountable more than ever, we had a very successful spring semester. The chapter finished the semester in the top three in grades, receiving a 3.258 GPA. Along with one of the top GPA’s on campus, we officially took first place in intramurals as well. We won 3 of the 5 major sports, softball, flag football, and basketball. Campus involvement is at 100 percent for all active members. Most notably is Gamma Xi 1470, Adam McMikle, as he was elected student body president of Missouri S&T. We have been encouraging all members of Sigma Nu to become more involved with many organizations and are honored to have Adam represent our school and Sigma Nu. We are also excited for Gamma Xi 1487 Connor Wolk as he enters his god’s year as an IFC representative. Each semester we have been growing as a chapter. We have been Pursuing Excellence and are very close to becoming a Rock Chapter. We have plans to utilize LEAD sessions more to build our members and our chapter as a whole. We believe if we meet these goals, we will receive Sigma Nu’s greatest honor in the upcoming years. I, as well as the rest of the chapter, would like to thank all alumni and their families that have supported us over the years. We thank you for willing to help improve our chapter any way possible. We hope to see you all at our upcoming homecoming event. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at

[email protected] or by phone at 314-420-5014 or contact our alumni chairman Jason Reed. We always enjoy when alumni come by and share stories about their “glory days”. Please enjoy the rest of our first summer edition, now with hyperlinks, of the Gamma Xi chapter newsletter. LIEUTENANT COMMANDER’S REPORT It is a great honor to be elected to the position of Lieutenant Commander of Sigma Nu, Gamma Xi Chapter. After this past semester, there is much to report. The gentlemen of Sigma Nu placed first in intramurals and reached a new height in academic excellence with a cumulative house GPA of 3.2. I am excited for the coming semester and the new challenges we’ll face. I plan to continue the great strides that have been made by Brother Day and Brother Pace in our pursuit of excellence. A tremendous foundation has been laid, and we will continue to build on it and achieve our goals while creating new ones. I truly believe that our vision of a brotherhood with an honorable reputation serving the community, school, and one another in the greatest possible capacity by aiming to excel out of respect for each other in pursuit of individual and fraternal goals is upon us, and we will continue to uphold that vision. I’ve tried to keep this short and to the point in order to let the other officers explain in detail the great accomplishments of the brothers of Sigma Nu. Also, once again, it is with tremendous honor and enthusiasm that I assume the position of Lieutenant Commander, and I will do everything within my power to carry on the constant improvement our chapter. I wish for you to enjoy the rest of the summer, and should anyone have any questions, concerns, or anything please don’t hesitate to email me at [email protected] or call 314-249-6650.

MARSHAL’S REPORT After the success of the 6 candidates last spring, I am very excited to continue with my responsibilities in the fall. Over the summer, I have been working to improve many aspects of the office. Most notably, our Candidate Education Program has been undergoing a few changes, which will be reflected in the fall semester. These changes have been made in order to raise expectations, maintain quality, and instill pride in our candidates. I expect a very successful candidate class in the fall, consisting of over 25 members (one of the largest fall pledge classes to date) who already demonstrate the values of love, honor, and truth. I look forward to leading these men through our candidate education program to teach them how to effectively communicate the values of Sigma Nu in their daily lives. Please, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns regarding our Candidate Education Program. I can be reached by email ([email protected]) or by phone at 217-299-8186. The quality of our candidate class will continue to be my top priority to ensure great additions to the Gamma Xi Chapter. Christopher Moore, ΓΞ 1500 Junior, Civil & Architectural Engineering

ALUMNI CHAIRMAN’S REPORT I am excited to report that I will function again as Alumni Chairman. My goal is to get more Alumni brothers back to Rolla for Homecoming in October and this time I have some help… Over the summer I have been working with a group of about twenty Gamma Xi alums to establish the Gamma Xi Alumni Chapter. This group’s purpose is to assist the active chapter keep alumni brothers in contact and involved. The best part about an alumni chapter is that it is recognized by the general fraternity and may vote at grand chapter. The first meeting of the alumni chapter will be held at Homecoming so please make plans to attend. Currently there is no membership fee to be a member of the alumni chapter. I’d also like to introduce the Alumni Chapter temporary officers, who will serve in their roles at least until Homecoming weekend. They are Worthy Commander, Todd Rastorfer, ΓΞ 1168; Worthy Lieutenant Commander, Tyler Herrell, ΓΞ 1464; Worthy Recorder, John Hooper, ΓΞ 1121; and Worthy Treasurer, Derek Rowland, ΓΞ 1400. I would also like to have Alumni representatives at candidate ceremony and at initiation as well as other active chapter events. I am also working to keep the Patio of Honor up to date. If you’d like a brick please send me an email or fill out the form included in this newsletter. Please keep an eye on your email for more information about alumni chapter and chapter events. Requests for more information about the Alumni Chapter may be directed to me at [email protected]. As always, don’t forget to update your contact information if you aren’t receiving email from us. Patio of Honor Greetings Brothers of Gamma Xi. As the chapter continues to grow, so does its history. The Patio of Honor continues to expand and it would be our pleasure to have you as our next honoree! Each commemorative brick is engraved with your name and initiation number and is placed alongside of those of your brothers. For a minimum donation of $75 you can have a brick created with your name and initiation number engraved on the front. The money will go towards the cost of the brick materials, as well as improvements to the house. We greatly appreciate your help to continually making Sigma Nu the best house on campus. BROTHERHOOD/PARTICIPATION CHAIRMAN As brotherhood chairman I am very excited for the upcoming fall 2015 semester. Last semester proved to be too busy for a brotherhood retreat and therefore we plan to hold one this semester with a weekend full of camping, service, and of course shenanigans. Last year we placed first overall in intramurals, and plan to keep the momentum going heading into the new year. And of course with the fall semester comes homecoming and we hope to see many alumni there. More details regarding homecoming will follow in the fall GAB. RECRUITMENT This summer the Gamma Xi Chapter of Sigma Nu is hosting recruitment events for potential new candidates for the 2015 fall semester to attend. Our goal for recruitment is to fill the remaining spots in the house and there is twenty-five open spots. It would be rather easy to get that many members, especially with the amount of interest we have had from incoming freshman, but we do not accept everyone who shows interest. We attempt to recruit young men with outstanding potential and who express the values of our Fraternity. Using Values-Based Recruitment, we recruit incoming freshman, or any other student at Missouri University of Science and Technology, who we see have the potential to be successful, dedicated, and active students and leaders. At our Father-Son BBQ recruitment event, on June 20th, we had twelve bids accepted. Along with the accepted bids, we have an additional six members who have confirmed that they will accept their bid. Additionally, eight bids were returned at our rush trip to the offsets in Fredericktown, MO. This brings the total for the fall semester to twenty-four candidates. Among those, there are four legacies who had accepted their bid into Sigma Nu. As always, the rush chairmen appreciate all support that alumni can give in recruiting worthy young men. If you know a high school senior who will be attending Missouri S&T and who expresses the values and principles of Sigma Nu, please refer them to us. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions about recruitment or if you know of a qualified candidate for our chapter. SCHOLARSHIP At the beginning of this past spring semester, our scholarship goal was to have all members meet the GPA requirement of 2.5 and to have the entire house achieve an overall GPA of 3.20. Although we did not successfully complete our first goal by having 5 members score under the GPA requirement, we were able to collectively achieve a house average GPA of 3.258. Not only did this house GPA meet our personal goal, we also ranked 3rd on campus for highest GPA among the Greek community, placing us well above the all Men, all Fraternity, and all Greek GPA averages. As Scholarship Chairman for this upcoming fall semester, I intend to use our previous incentives as well as modify and include new rewards for our members to motivate them and continue our academic success. In addition, I hope to update our file system to provide newer and better material as well as easier access so we can fully utilize these resources. As a house, our goal for this fall semester is to have all members achieve the GPA requirement and to maintain an overall GPA of 3.20.
