KIDS & FAMILIES FAMILY BRIDGE | 9.3.2017 Hurricane Harvey a weekly resource to connect church and home
What your child did this Sunday: This week we discussed when Mary anointed Jesus with an expensive perfume. We discussed that what happened in the days leading to Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan. Jesus said that Mary had prepared Him for burial (Matt. 26:12). Days later, Jesus died on the cross to rescue people from sin. On the third day, He rose from the dead. Jesus is alive! We also allowed children to discuss their thoughts, questions and concerns regarding the hurricane and effects. We strive to be authentic and honest about our own confusion and worry, as well as confident in God’s glory through all storms with these two points: God is not the creator of evil and suffering. Though suffering isn't good, God can use it to accomplish good.
This week’s Bible passage: John 12:1-8 “Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.” Key Passage: Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free”

Weekly Family Faith Time 9.3.2017 What you can do at home this week
READ
DISCUSS
READ: John 12:1-8 in a common translation or children’s Bible. Connection Questions: Who are the characters in the story? What was the important event? What does that tell us about God?Also re-read the stories of Noah and Job where God never abandons. DISCUSS: Connect the unexpected event in the passage to unexpected events today, like the hurricane and loss. Where do you see God amidst the tragedy? How can God work in you?
DO: Be open and honest with your children as they question the events over this week. Be ready to answer their questions with “I don’t know.” Also assure them we are not alone in our confusion and worry. God is with both us and those in loss.
DO
PRAY
PRAY: Dear loving and good God, thank you for our own safety. Though we do not understand all that is happening, Lord we know you are always with us. Lead us to love with your love in every way we can and rest in you when we are afraid. Amen
