Today, I will identify the defining and non-defining attributes of plane shapes.
Vocabulary Defining Attributes: Qualities that define a shape, such as number of sides, number of vertices, and being closed. If all sides do not meet, the figure is open and is not a plane shape.
Steps 1. Count the sides. 2. Count the vertices. 3. Determine if it is an open or closed shape. 4. Determine the attribute that does not define the shape (color, size, orientation).
Non-Defining Attributes: Attributes such as color, orientation, or overall size that do not define a shape. Orientation: The position of a shape Vertex: the common point where two lines meet, a corner Vertices: more than one vertex
Name: ____________________________ Date: ______________________________ Directions: Describe the following plane shapes by their defining attributes and then circle the non-defining attribute.
1. Name this shape. It is large, closed, has 2 longer opposite sides, 2 shorter opposite sides, and 4 vertices. Which characteristic is a nondefining attribute? Shape
Non-defining attribute 2. Circle the shape that is not a square. Explain how you know that it is not a square.
