June 2012

Heather presented to the group tips on communication styles and listening skills. Some ways to improve our listening skills are to stop talking, always look at the person and don’t interrupt. Some communication styles included aggressive communication, submissiveness and assertive communication. In addition, she used the acronym HORSE to explain listening skills in the areas of the home, office, relatives, spouse and external.

60th Alabama Division Annual Meeting (ADAM) June 22-24, 2012 Birmingham, AL The international theme for IAAP 2011-2012 was Making The Leap To REMARKABLE. Our pre-conference briefing started on Thursday with our board members meeting. The ADAM Kickoff meeting speaker was Dr. Dale Callahan, P.E., University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Engineering/IEM. Dr. Callahan’s session was titled “Make the LEAP to Remarkable: A Legacy of Excellence, Achievement and Passion.” The points taken from this session was to learn more about how we should look after our own self-interests; determine what type of legacy we are leaving for others (professionally or personally); always have a clear vision of what we want to be; take action on setting and achieving goals; and have a passion and purpose that matches your organization. In addition, the International Secretary, Antoinette Smith, CAP-OM, provided the group with an update on the latest international news regarding events, recruiting, marketing, new initiatives and financials. She also presented “Making a Polished Leap to REMARKABLE” by providing us with the most common etiquette mistakes made in business, personal and social situations. We learned what to avoid and how to demonstrate kindness towards one another. Antoinette closed the conference on Sunday with a workshop titled “A Remarkable Leap Communicating Across Generations.” This workshop was an exciting one. I had the opportunity to work in a group setting that involved individuals from the different generation groups. This allowed all of us to see the differences in how we view work, what pushes our “hot buttons” and what life events defined each generation. I enjoyed serving as the 2011-2012 Alabama Division Secretary and meeting other administrative professionals from across the state. Several of our members were recognized for their accomplishments. They were Kathy Brown, Professional Development Director - Gadsden State; Carol Wilcutt, Gadsden Chapter President – Gadsden State; and Baisha Woody, Professional Development Honor Roll - Gadsden State.
