Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections
STUDENTS PAGE July 24-26, 2011 Influence in Your Church—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a teenager goes first): Say: Some teens feel pain over what their parents have done with their bodies. It’s different in our home. One area of your life where I have seen you make godly decisions about your body is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:
2. Read Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:11-12
Truth • God calls believers to serve Him even when they are young. Untruths • Only older, married people should serve God in church. • Only those with a degree should serve God in church. • Young people are not supposed to lead or serve in church.
3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.
4. Think It Through: Present the following situation: High school student John was asked to serve as vice chair of the church mission trip team. The chairperson was absent, and John had to lead the meeting. One of the older team members said, “You’re too young to lead this committee.” Ask: How would most teens respond to the older member’s comment? How would someone similar to Timothy respond to this person? Discuss responses. Say: God gives us opportunities to serve. His Word helps us know how to relate to our peers and older believers. We need to thank Him for the opportunity and the practical help. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Include in your prayer: Father God, help me serve You in a way that shows respect to my peers and to older believers. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Practice “honoring” your parents with the way you respond to them. For three days, make a commitment to come quickly every time they call for you. Smile and say, How can I serve you? After the three days, decide if this idea is worth continuing.
