Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE December 11-13, 2011 Honesty in One’s Finances—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: I agree. Getting our hearts closer means a lot to me. Another thing we can do to get closer to each other is . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Romans 13:7-8.

Truth • God expects us to be responsible and honest with money. Untruths • God doesn’t care if you’re in debt or not. • Money takes priority over everything else—including relationships. • I’ve worked hard for my money, so I can use it however I want.

3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Encourage family members to “agree” or “disagree” with the following statements based on today’s verses. Point out that they need to explain their answer. • It’s OK for believers to cheat on their taxes because everybody else does. • If the cashier gives you too much change, just walk away and say nothing. • Show love and respect only to those who deserve it. • You only need to respect people who can help you in the future. After reviewing the statements, re-read the verses for today. Say: We have an opportunity to show our love for Christ by paying all of our debts and caring for all people. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Thank God for the blessings He provides and ask Him for courage to pay debts and show honor to everyone. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Is there an action you’ve taken that you would have handled differently in the last 2-3 years? If so, share that example with your parents. Ask them the same question. Thank them for sharing with you.
