4th Grade March Newsletter 2018 Units of study for March… ELA: This unit of study will continue and be centered on this essential question, “How do new or improved technologies meet needs? How have inventions impacted the lives of people over time? How can we organize and develop our ideas to create an informational writing piece?” Students will be learning to write informational essays that will be based on this standard: W.4.2-write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. We will be simultaneously closely reading non-fiction based text centered on the theme of inventors. I would encourage you to have discussions with your child surrounding this topic in order to deepen their understanding. An activity you can do at home with your child is, take a trip to the Hall of Science and closely examine some of the inventions, design a prototype or an invention (bring it in to share with the class). Also, discuss who invented the inventions and why? Feel free to encourage your child to read biographies and auto-biographies about inventors. Please remember I-Ready and is a great computer support that is used in school and may also be used at home. Feel free to remind your child of this at home as well. Math: Students are working on geometry! We are working on geometric items and how they relate to the real world. This will be done in multiple chapters. An important part of geometry is the vocabulary terms themselves. Make sure to be studying the terms as the chapters progress. If you don’t know the difference between a line and line segment you will not be able to correctly identify them in a picture. Please remember that I-ready and prodigy can be used to practice more at home! Social Studies: New York played a significant role in the Revolutionary War because of its location and the events that took place here. We are beginning our unit with what led up to the Revolution- The French and Indian War. From there students will be taking the role of colonists to see how they could handle different situations colonists were faced with. We will look at the battles fought in New York, the role of a loyalist, patriot and neutralist and the importance of creating laws that are equal and fair. Science: For the month of March, grade 4 will be researching an extreme natural event. In groups of 4 the students will choose an extreme natural event and investigate on their own the causes, and the positive and negative impacts it has on living things and the environment. I am really excited about this task because the students will share their knowledge in a unique way. They can make a model, create a survival kit or book, create a brochure, choose a scene from a movie, design a slide show, just to name a few ideas. The students are to complete the task in class but can bring in whatever is necessary to help them. I look forward to the presentations which will be held towards the end of March.
