5th Grade March Newsletter 2018 ELA: As we begin our new unit of study we will be reading nonfiction texts centered on the topic of science. We will read

about changes to the environment as well as their affects on both the earth as well as humans. While reading various texts we will practice creating informational writing pieces based on the topic.

> CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

An activity you may conduct with your child is to watch a documentary or movie based on the earth such as how it is

formed, what it is made up of, or how various factors have influenced the change on the environment. Discussing this topic with your child can help them gain background knowledge on the subject, which may allow them to be more successful within this unit. It is important to make sure your child is reading every night for 30 minutes. Reading

independently on a regular basis will help your child become a strong reader and writer. Also, it is encouraged that

your child uses I-Ready as a computer support as often as possible. If your child does not remember their log in for IReady, feel free to email me.

Math: This month we are finishing up our work with fractions. Remember that the best way to learn fractions is to have your children help you in the kitchen! Any exposure to fractions will help make it more meaningful in the

classroom. We are focusing on multiplying and dividing fractions. After that, we will be beginning to work with volume of rectangular prisms. Volume will be a completely new concept for them and I am looking forward to helping them understand the properties of three dimensional figures.

5.NF.B. Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions

5.MD.C. Geometric measurement: understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition

Social Studies: Students will be working on learning about Mexico and the United States. They will compare the

geography of the two countries as well as society and government changes over history and comparing them to today.

Students in 501 & 502 will be reading Esperanza Rising during this unit as well to show how life in Mexico compared to life in the United States as well as how class systems effected peoples relationships. Students are encouraged to take

active roles in all class discussions and they are encouraged to keep up with current events, especially during this time when things concern them just as much as adults.

Science: We teach our children everything we know in life so that one day they may able to leave the next and explore this great big beautiful world of ours. For the last six months I have been teaching your kids how to ask and answer questions like a scientist. Like a mother bird flying back and forth to her nest, bringing her offspring worms and insects, I have been coming and going to their groups providing them with ideas and skills. We call this the scientific method. Well at some point the little birdies have to prop themselves up on, fly away and find their own food. The scientific method is them learning to fly. The food they gather is knowledge. This month our students will be in complete control over all that they learn. They will choose a topic, ask a scientific question, and design an experiment to find out answer to their question. They will.... fly into this great big world of science.
