4th Grade December Newsletter 2016 Units of study for the December are… ELA: This unit of study will be centered on this essential question, “What were the various events that led up to the American Revolution?” Students will be learning to write informational essays that will be based on this standard:  W.4.2-Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. We will be simultaneously closely reading non-fiction based text centered on the theme of the American Revolution! Feel free to have discussions with your child surrounding this topic in order to deepen their understanding. An activity you can do at home with your child is to visit a public library together and explore all types of information that is there surrounding the topic of the American Revolution. Discuss the information that your child found while researching in the library. Helping your child learn the value of using the library can be a lifelong skill! Also, your child should be reading non- fiction based books at home every night for 30 minutes and logging it onto their reading logs. Lastly, IReady is a great computer support that is used in school and may also be used at home. Math:

In the upcoming units we are going to be working on multiplication and division. We will

be looking at multiple strategies to solve the same problem. Students will use their understanding of basic multiplication facts to complete larger problems. The standards addressed will be:  4.OA.1. Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison.  4.OA.2. Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison.  4.OA.3. Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having wholenumber answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. It is important to practice your multiplication facts and fact families at home. Also, I-Ready can be used as a great tool for review. Science: For the month of December we will be well into understanding the essential question, what makes water so special? Through investigations students will focus on understanding evaporation, condensation, and their connection to the water cycle. Our next lab we will determine what happens when water is mixed with earth materials (soil and gravel). One of the goals this year is to draw conclusions from collected data. Our second lab will focus on this goal as well as how to follow a step by step procedure. Please have your child look over their lab report rubric to refresh their memory when writing a procedure and conclusion. Social Studies: We can't believe it's December already!!! We are fully engulfed in the Native American settlers unit, where we are learning all about the Iroquois and the Algonquian tribes. We will be looking at how Native American myths reflect their beliefs and values; how their cultures in New York organize their families and communities; along with how roles, responsibilities and power defined in Native American government.

Current Events are an important component to Social Studies, have your kids watch the news with you and talk to them about what's going on in our city and the world. It helps them make connections in history as well as present day. Happy Holidays!!! Remember: *Toy drive, book, and food drive is going on…please bring in a new toy to be donated. *Pajama drive is also going on; please bring in a new pair of pajamas that will be donated to our local homeless shelter for children. *Holiday Break is from, December 26-January 2, 2017
