Ireland’s ANDREW CONWAY has scored nine tries in nine matches at the IRB Junior World Championships and is second on the list of leading try scorers, which is headed by New Zealand’s ZAC GUILDFORD with 10 tries. Wales need 21 more points to reach 500 in the IRB Junior World Championships. There have been 27 red and yellow cards shown in Wales’ 19 matches, which is more than any other team. Ireland have kicked 50 penalties in the IRB Junior World Championships, more than any other side. This will be the second time that Wales and Ireland have met in the IRB Junior World Championships. Wales won 19-17 in the fifth place semi final in 2009. The two sides met in the Under 20s Six Nations in March at Llanelli when Ireland scored a last minute try to draw 26-26.

Match summary:

• •

Wales finished in second place in Pool A despite suffering a record 92-0 defeat to New Zealand, thanks to wins over Argentina and Italy before losing their fifth place semi final play off match 34-20 to Fiji. If they lose to Ireland on Sunday to finish eighth it will be Wales’ worst finishing position in the history of the competition. Ireland finished third in Pool C with one win and two defeats before losing 57-15 to South Africa in the fifth place semi final. If they beat Wales to finish seventh it will be their highest ever position in the IRB Junior World Championships.

Team news:

• •

Wales have made seven changes to their starting line up from the team that lost to Fiji, and have 11 of the side that started the opening match of the tournament against Argentina, which they won 34-8. Right wing LIAM WILLIAMS is the only player in the Welsh side that will have started all five matches in the championship. Ireland have made eight changes to their starting line up from the side that lost to South Africa and give first starting appearances in the Championship to prop FINLAY BEALHAM, flanker SHANE BUCKLEY and centre ALEX KELLY. Four players have started in every match in the tournament; prop TADHG FURLONG, number eight JORDI MURPHY, scrum half KIERAN MARMION and full back ANDREW CONWAY, who has played on the wing in all four previous matches.

There is very little to choose between the two sides on age, height or weight.

The tall guys

Ireland’s IAIN HENDERSON is the tallest man on the pitch at 199 cm (6ft 6ins), which is four cm above the Welsh second row forward MACAULEY COOK.

The heavyweight division

• •

The combined weight of the Wales pack is 860 kg, which gives them just a five kg advantage over Ireland in the scrum. Welsh prop RHODRI JONES tips the scales at 119 kg (18st 10lb) and has a four kg advantage over his direct opponent in the scrum, Ireland’s heaviest man TADHG FURLONG.

History

• • •

This will be the second time that Wales and Ireland have met in the IRB Junior World Championships. Wales won 19-17 in the fifth place semi final in 2009. The two sides met in the Under 20s Six Nations in March at Llanelli when Ireland scored a last minute try to draw 26-26. MATTHEW MORGAN kicked 16 points for Wales that day, with two of Ireland’s tries coming from CRAIG GILROY and DAVID DOYLE. Wales have eight players in their starting line up that started that match, whilst Ireland have seven.

Experience

• • • •

Wales have four players in their starting line up with previous experience in the IRB Junior World Championships; props WILL TAYLOR and RHODRI JONES, lock forward LLOYD PEERS and full back STEVE SHINGLER. Wales finished third in the 2011 Under 20s Six Nations Championship with two wins, a draw and two defeats. MACAULEY COOK, BEN THOMAS and WILL TAYLOR played in all five matches and are in the starting line up on Sunday. Ireland have five players in their starting line up with previous experience in the IRB Junior World Championships; hooker DAVID DOYLE, number eight JORDI MURPHY, fly half JAMES McKINNEY, wing ANDREW BOYLE and full back ANDREW CONWAY. Ireland finished fourth in the 2011 Under 20s Six Nations Championship, behind Wales on points difference. There are six players in their starting line up who were in the Ireland squad for all five matches in that tournament; DAVID DOYLE, DANIEL QUALTER, AARON CONNEELY, JORDI MURPHY, ALEX KELLY and ANDREW BOYLE.

Kicking ahead

• •

Ireland fly half JAMES McKINNEY has kicked 69 points in the IRB Junior World Championships over the last two years, putting him ninth on the all time list. Wales fly half MATTHEW MORGAN has scored 40 points so far in the tournament, including a try against Argentina.

Danger man

Ireland full back ANDREW CONWAY, who has started on the wing in all four previous matches this year, scored five tries in 2010 when playing at full back, including a hat trick against Scotland. He has added to that tally with four of Ireland’s six tries in this year’s championship and has moved up to second on the all time list with nine tries, just one behind New Zealand’s ZAC GUILDFORD.

At the double

Wales prop RHODRI JONES has scored a try in each of the last two matches against Italy and Fiji, whilst wing LIAM WILLIAMS scored two tries in the opening match of the Championship against Argentina.

Birthday boy

Ireland wing ANDREW BOYLE celebrated his 20th birthday on Friday. He has yet to score a try in this year’s tournament but scored two tries against Samoa in 2010.

The man in the middle

JONATHON WHITE of New Zealand takes charge of this match, his third in IRB Junior World Championship competition and his second involving both teams, having officiated in South Africa’s 42-26 win over Ireland and Wales’ 56-6 win over Italy in the Pool stages.
