2011 Records

This will be the third time that England and New Zealand have met in the IRB Junior World Championships and both previous meetings also came in the final, with New Zealand winning 38-3 in 2008 and 44-28 in 2009. Both sides have won all 12 matches they have played in the Pool stages of the IRB Junior World Championships. England wing CHRISTIAN WADE has scored five tries in just three matches in this year’s championship to add to the one he scored against Argentina in 2010. He is the joint leading try scorer this year alongside New Zealand’s CHARLES PIUTAU and South Africa’s FRANCOIS VENTER and is joint sixth on the all time list. England’s fly half, GEORGE FORD, is the youngest player in the Championship at 18 years and three months. He has scored 44 points in the four matches played, including a try against France in the semi final. New Zealand have won all 19 matches they have played in the IRB Junior World Championships and have won all three previous tournaments. New Zealand scored a record 204 points in their three Pool matches. They need to score 22 points in the final to beat the tournament record of 262 points set by New Zealand in 2010. New Zealand scored 30 tries in the Pool stages this year, with 15 different try scorers. New Zealand have only conceded 16 tries in 19 matches, the lowest of any team and 21 fewer than the next lowest, South Africa. New Zealand fly half GARETH ANSCOMBE has scored 68 points and is the leading scorer in this year’s championship, 13 points ahead of South Africa’s JOHAN GOOSEN. New Zealand need 40 points to reach 1,000 in the history of the competition in their 20th match and five more conversions to reach 100. New Zealand have 11 players in their starting line up who have scored tries in the IRB Junior World Championships

Match summary:

• • •

The final of the IRB Junior World Championship 2011 features the two teams with the best records in the history of the competition. New Zealand remain undefeated in 19 matches and have won all three previous tournaments, whilst England have been runners up twice and have only lost four of their 19 games played. In this year’s Championship England finished top of Pool C following three wins out of three, including a 26-20 victory over South Africa and followed that up with a 33-18 win over France to secure their place in the final. New Zealand finished top of Pool A after scoring a record 204 points in their three matches, beating the previous record of 196 set by South Africa in 2008. They then beat old rivals Australia 37-7 in the semi finals.

Team news:

• •

England have made four changes to their starting line up from the team that beat France. HENRY THOMAS returns at prop, SAM JONES at flanker, ELLIOT DALY comes back into the centres following injury and ANDY SHORT starts on the wing. Second row forward JOE LAUNCHBURY and flanker MATT KVESIC are the only two members of the squad to start in every match in the tournament. New Zealand have made just one personnel change to their starting line from the side that beat Australia, with MITCHELL SCOTT coming in on the wing. In one positional change, FRANCIS SAILI moves from the wing to outside centre. New Zealand have rested all their players for at least one of the matches in the tournament so none of the squad have started every match.

JWC COMMENTATORS NOTES (contd) IRB Junior World Championships Facts and figures

Experience

England (all time tournament record):

• • • • • •

England were runners up to New Zealand in both 2008 and 2009 but finished fourth last year after losing to Australia and South Africa in their last two matches. Have won all 12 matches they have played in the Pool stages, a feat only matched by New Zealand. Have only won three out of seven matches played in the play offs, beating South Africa in the semi finals in 2008 and 2009 before their win over France this year. Scored 611 points in total, which is the fourth highest overall. Kicked 48 penalties in total, the second highest behind Ireland on 50. Average points difference in the first half of matches over four years is 9.2 but only 3.5 in the second half. One of only three teams to have received two red cards but only received five yellow cards in 18 matches, the second lowest of all teams competing in 2011 after Australia.

New Zealand (all time tournament record):

• • • • • •

New Zealand have won all three IRB Junior World Championships and now have 19 wins out of 19 matches played. Their narrowest winning margin was 14 points in the 2009 semi finals, when beating Australia 31-17. Scored 960 points in total, including 133 tries, the highest of any team. Only conceded 16 tries in 19 matches, the lowest of any team and 21 fewer than the next lowest, South Africa. Only 10.9% of their points have come from converted penalty kicks, the second lowest percentage of the 12 competing teams after Australia. Their record in the second half of matches is particularly outstanding, with an average points difference of 25.2 per game, over 12 points better than any other team. They have won the second half in all 19 matches they have played.

• •

Leading the way

New Zealand have the tallest man on the pitch in lock forward BRODIE RETALLICK at 204 cm (6ft 8ins) which is three cm above England’s CHARLIE MATTHEWS.

The heavyweight division

• •

The combined weight of the New Zealand pack is 877 kg, which gives them a 17 kg advantage over England in the scrum. England have the heaviest man in the tournament in the shape of loosehead prop MAKO VUNIPOLA who tips the scales at 130 kg (20st 7lb), which is 11 kg heavier than his direct opponent in the scrum, BEN TAMEIFUNA, who is New Zealand’s heaviest player.

History

This will be the third time that England and New Zealand have met in the IRB Junior World Championships and both previous meetings also came in the final, with New Zealand winning 38-3 in 2008 and 44-28 in 2009.

New Zealand fly half GARETH ANSCOMBE has scored 68 points and is the leading scorer in this year’s Championship, 13 points ahead of South Africa’s JOHAN GOOSEN.

Try scorers

The tall guys

Four of England’s starting line up played in the 2010 IRB Junior World Championships; prop MAKO VUNIPOLA, lock CHARLIE MATTHEWS, number eight ALEX GRAY and wing CHRISTIAN WADE. Eight of the starting line up also started in every match in this year’s Six Nations Championships when England won all five matches played. Centre ELLIOT DALY scored seven tries in that tournament, with five tries each by number eight ALEX GRAY and wing ANDY SHORT. New Zealand captain LUKE WHITELOCK is the only member of their starting line up who played in the 2010 IRB Junior World Championship. He started in four matches, including the 62-17 win over Australia in the final. Three of New Zealand’s starting line up played Super Rugby this season; SAM CANE played for the Chiefs and LIMA SOPOAGA and BEAUDEN BARRETT represented the Hurricanes. Six more players in the starting XV appeared in the ITM Cup; BEN TAMEIFUNA, STEVEN LUATUA, BRAD SHIELDS, TJ PERENARA, GARETH ANSCOMBE and CHARLES PIUTAU. Twelve of the ‘Baby Blacks’ squad warmed up for this tournament by taking part in the IRB Pacific Rugby Cup and seven have been selected in the starting line up on Friday, including captain LUKE WHITELOCK, who scored a try for the Crusader Knights in their 55-7 win over Fiji Warriors; and BEAUDEN BARRETT, who scored for the Hurricanes Development XV in their 27-13 win over Fiji Warriors.

New Zealand have 11 players in their starting line up who have scored tries in the IRB Junior World Championship, with two more on the replacements bench. Outside centre FRANCIS SAILI has scored four tries, including three in the last two matches, whilst scrum half TJ PERENARA scored in all three Pool matches and is joined on three tries by SAM CANE, who scored a hat trick against Wales and LIMA SOPOAGA. England captain ALEX GRAY has scored a try in each of the last two matches against South Africa and France to add to the five he scored in the Under 20s Six Nations this season.

The man in the middle

JACO PEYPER of South Africa takes charge of this match, his seventh in IRB Junior World Championship competition but his first involving New Zealand. He officiated in England’s 33-25 win over Ireland in the Pool stages and has issued six yellow cards in his six previous matches.

Young talent

England’s fly half, GEORGE FORD, is the youngest player in the Championship at 18 years and three months. He has scored 44 points in the four matches played, including a try against France in the semi final.
