Quilts of Valor American women have a long tradition of making quilts for a cause. In last week’s newsletter, we announced that Kudzu Blossom Quilt Shop is a Certified Quilts of Valor– Under our Wings Quilt Shop. We know that the quilters in this area will support the Under Our Wings program. Don’t forget to sign up for a workshop space on June 4 or September 18. In reading one of our new books, The Civil War Sewing Circle, I was amazed to learn that our foremothers made 250,000 quilts for soldier during the civil war: ―Countless numbers of women organized their church groups and sewing circles to do what they could to support the enlisted men. In the early days of the war, the sewing circles were informal; as the need for quilts and bedding grew, they became more organized. It is estimated that over 250,000 quilts were eventually sewn by these local sewing circles and donated to the US Sanitary Commission during a time when they were so desperately needed.” Kathleen Tracy, The Civil War Sewing Circle

The Soldier’s Cot Quilt is one of 16 projects from this book. It was inspired by a vintage Civil War quilt on display at the Lincoln Memorial Shrine in Redlands California. The Civil War Sewing Circle ties together stores stories and letters of the past with the quilts of the Civil War era. It is festinating to read about the Civil War from a woman’s perspective. If you love history and quilts, this book is a must for your library.
