*- rankings determined by the Collegiate Baseball National Poll
12-19 overall 3-15 CC Lost 3
LAST TIME OUT: Kutztown rebounded from its heartbreaking walk-off loss at Wilmington by easily defeating Philadelphia University, 17-2. The Golden Bears scored in each of the first seven innings, led by a four-run fifth inning and five-run seventh inning. Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) dominated with a 4-for-4 afternoon that resulted in the first five-RBI game by a KU player this season. Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) and Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) both had three hits in the game. Rubendall is a perfect 7-for-7 with three doubles in the last two games. TIMELY HITS ARE A THING OF BEAUTY: The Golden Bears put together an impressive 16-1 stretch earlier this season in large part due to their time hitting. KU defeated Barton on March 20 in extra innings after a five-run 12th inning. Meanwhile, in PSAC play, Kutztown won three of its first five home games in walk-off fashion. All these wins occurred in comeback fashion. Of the team’s 11 come-from-behind victories this season, 10 of them came during the 16-1 stretch. Also, the team loves to play two-out bingo. KU plated 75 two-out RBI so far this season, averaging 2.2 such runs per game. This includes a season-high nine such RBI against Adelphi. Nine different players have at least five two-out RBI for the season, led by 11 from junior Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights). MOBB DEEP: While KU lacks a dominant statistical player at this point, the Maroon and Gold sport a very deep and productive roster. Seven batters (with at least 50 AB) are hitting .320 or better, with six of them posting an on-base percentage of .415 or better. In all, eight different players put together a hitting streak of at least five games. On the flip side, of the 19 pitchers to appear for the Golden Bears this season, 14 won at least one game. Seven pitchers with at least nine innings of work own a ERA of 3.00 or better. The team plays overall more successfully from the bullpen, even for those who have started games. KU’s batting average allowed drops from .306 to .221 when going to the ‘pen. HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME: The Golden Bears put a true meaning to “taking one for the team.” Kutztown batters so far have taken a hit by pitch 49 times this season, as opposed only 15 pitches that plunked their opponents. Five different players reached base via HBP at least six times, led by nine from Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) and Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn). KU batters took a HBP in 25 of 34 games this season (73.5 percent of their games). NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP: The fifth inning seems to be the “money inning” this season. The Golden Bears won all 25 games in which they held a lead or were tied through the first five. On the flip side, they are 0-9 when facing a deficit at this point. KU has yet to lose a game in which they had multirun lead in the third inning or later. However, with the walk-off loss against Wilmington, the Golden Bears lost their first game when holding a lead anytime after the seventh inning. TOO TOUGH TO EARN IT: Early in the season, Kutztown did not allow an earned run for 34 consecutive innings, which occurred during a four-game span from 2/21 to 3/9. KU shutout two teams at the Builder Invitational. The 5-0 blanking of Lock Haven featured a team one-hitter. The team also shut out Bloomsburg by a 2-0 margin. KU allowed unearned runs in a 5-2 victory over Apprentice and an 8-1 Game 1 win over Virginia State. The streak ended in the first inning of Game 2 against VSU. HISTORY IN CARY, NC: On March 19, in Game 2 against Shaw, KU threw a seven-inning no-hitter. Three runners got on base all game. Starter Tom Neely (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) retired all six batters he faced, as did reliever Dave King (Trentmore, PA/Minersville). J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/MD-Baltimore Co.) pitched a perfect fifth inning. Karl Von Kiel (Macungie, PA/West Mount) struck out the side in a hitless sixth. Ryan Clow (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) sealed the no-no with a hitless seventh. This marked the first KU no-hitter since April 18, 2010 (Nate Reed v. Bloom). THESE BEARS ARE GOLDEN: Through 25 games, the Golden Bears owned a 20-5 record. This marks Kutztown’s best start through 25 games since they were also 20-5 in 2009. Going further back, KU owned a 23-2 mark in 2007. The Golden Bears finished with a 34-17 record four years ago, ending its season in the NCAA Atlantic Regional. KU finished 49-7 in 2007, losing in the DII World Series.
Games highlighted in maroon will be broadcasted on the Golden Bear Network at kubears.com (subject to change)
Game Notes, continued BRANDO IS THE MARKER: Sophomore outfielder Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) thrived during the team’s Spring Break four-game trip to North Carolina. Martinez tallied multiple hits in all four games and hit .667 (10-15) with two doubles, two stolen bases and eight RBI. As a result of that and his solid play in the four-game set against Mansfield, Martinez earned PSAC East Player of the Week honors for 3/25. His .394 batting average, .473 on-base percentage and 18 stolen bases lead the team. This year, he owned a 10-game run scored streak, a 12-game hit streak and a current 18-game reach base streak.
