LADIES FOOTBALL

In late 2016 the LGFA announced a programme the aim of which was to retain girls playing ladies football, from the age group 15-18, with the greatest fall off rate, recognised nationwide. Valley Rovers applied to participate and were among only 10 clubs nationwide selected to take part. The selection was very positive because now the club would get LGFA support for what we had already recognised as a problem area in the ladies football club. Actions had already commenced in the club with the same aim. Coaching courses run by the LGFA but also with the professional expertise of Liam O’Reilly coaching our coaches, we had seen an opportunity to improve. These exercises commenced in November 2016 and right up until this last session of Gaelic4Teens (G4T). G4T comprised of 3 days during March and April. On the first 2 days, coaches from this age group travelled to the Marino Institute in Dublin, for tutoring on creating a real positive coaching environment for our players and how we as coaches conduct our business and be brave enough to adapt and try new things. By doing so we will then start to see change. The learnings from these days have been brought back to the ladies club and through our coaching community of practice, we shared the very good ideas which will

help to sustain the club well into the future. The programme culminated on Tuesday April 18th with the Valley Rovers coaches and U16 & U18 teams & supporters making the trip to Croke Park for blitz games and educational talks on nutrition, lifestyle planning and what they should expect from their coaches. VRLF would like to thank all those supporters who travelled with us today, all the girls who participated in our G4T programme since March and to the LGFA for their support and efforts in recognising but also acting to help our clubs and others to stem the fall off. Special thanks has to go the following coaches, John Hurley, Denis Mulvihill, Denis Kiely & John O’Donovan who committed their time effortlessly in going to Dublin on 2 separate Saturdays with the intention of improving our ladies football club. Thank you all.

The photograph attached shows all the girls & coaches who made the trip today.

LADIES U14 – FOOTBALL Valley Rover Ladies U14 Football teams have had a busy few weeks as their League Campaigns are in full swing. This year we have entered two teams in the U14A and U14C League

Photo of U14A squad who qualified for County Feile. U14A Due to the bad weather during the early spring the team struggled to get many training sessions or matches fitted in. This showed in the first League game of the season as the team were defeated against a well organised Bandon side. As the weather improved however the team have overcome these early setbacks and have followed up with victories against Kinsale and Dohenys and are well placed to qualify for the knockout stages. There has been an excellent attendance at training and the girls have shown excellent commitment. A number of the team are dual Camogie and football players, so it has been a challenge for the club to manage the game time of the players, and ensure that the club remain competitive at both codes, without burning out the players. Laoise Collins is on both the Cork Hurling and Football squad, and Molly & Kate Lynch and Orla O’Sullivan are on the Cork Camogie squad and we congratulate them on their success The U14A side have also qualified to represent West Cork in the Cork Feile following the qualifiers this weekend U14C The U14C League team suffered the same start to the season with a lack of training and their first game of the season was a league game against Bandon. The

girls put up an excellent performance in the game but the lack of game time told against them as they went down to a narrow defeat. Similar to the U14A team the girls have responded well and have won all their games since, against Muntir na nGael, Gabriel Rangers and Ilen Rovers. The team are now equally well placed to qualify for the knockout stages. The U14C team is primarily composed of U13 players, so their performance thus far against U14 teams shows the ability of this team and strength of character to compete above their age level.

CORK U16’s MUNSTER CHAMPIONS

JUVENILE

UNDER 16’s Valleys U16 A Hurling Valleys U16 “A” hurlers welcomed Courceys to Brinny last Wednesday night. Courceys started strongly and were leading 0-3 to 0-0 after fifteen minutes. Two points form Conor Taheny kept valleys in the game but a late goal and a number of points had Courceys leading at half time 1-06 to 0-02. Valleys upped their game in the second half but a number of wides couldn’t get close to Courceys. An Eoin Nash point kept us going but a late goal from Courceys saw them run out winners 2-8 to 0-3. Valleys defended exceptionally well in the second half.
