MARKET REPORT PRIME & STORE CATTLE SALE THURSDAY 23rd JANUARY 2014 THOUGHT OF THE WEEK The expert in anything was once a beginner. Numbers reduced to just under 1200 at the second sale of the year at Emerald with a better quality yarding increasing average prices. Steers & Bullocks sold to a top of 169 cents/kg to be 6 cents easier than last sale. Heavier feeder types topped at 156 cents a drop of 10 cents however, better quality weaner types showed a 10 cent improvement selling to 147 cents/kg with a good average of 138 cents/kg. Heavy heifers sold to 143 cents/kg and average 135 cents/kg with feeder types selling to 145 cents/kg to be 4 cents better than last sale. Medium and weaner heifers sold to improved rates making up to 126 cents on a reduced offering from the previous week. Heavy cows improved 5 cents to sell to a top of 142 cents/kg with a strong average of 135 cents/kg. The few Bulls on offer were form on last weeks rates to 119 cents/kg and Cows & Calves sold to a top of $600 and average $475.
HIGHLIGHTS: Evan & Debbie Smith, Comet sold steers today at 163 weighing 655kg/hd returning at 1067/hd, whilst his cows made 140 weighing 525kg returning &736/hd. Aaron Stranks 'Sunnyvale' Anakie sold Brahman X cows today at 143 weighing 438kg/hd returning at 628/hd. Josh & Bonnie Walsh 'Walgala' Emerald sold steers today at 162 weighing 522kg/hd returning at 846/hd. David & Olga Kirk, “Stockhaven” Emerald, sold a quality line of heavy Charolais X Cows to top at 142.2c/kg to average 138.3 c/kg. The lead pen weighed 599 kg for $821/head. Mark Lane & Family, Anakie, sold a good quality pen of Santa X Weaner Steers to make 145.2 c/kg and weigh 230 kg to return $334/ head.
