Our Learning Math: We reviewed all standards learned this quarter: time, elapsed time, creating accurate bar and pictographs, analyzing and solving word problems according to data in a graph, and perimeter (MD 1, 3, & 8). We will take the Unit 1 test this week and will be introduced to the concept of area. Shared Reading: We began a new close read, Murdoch’s Path, where students will begin building their knowledge on identifying the structure of a literary text and explaining how that structure builds upon itself as the story progresses (RL 3.5). We were first introduced to the story by reading aloud the text and identifying the central message. We will practice recounting the story and proving the central message with text evidence, in addition to practicing how to explain the progression of the story. For word work this week, we worked on forming compound sentences with coordinating conjunctions (L.3.1.H). Students learned what an independent clause is and how two independent clauses can be combined into one sentence with a comma and coordinating conjunction. Writing: We continued our memoir unit (W.3). We continued writing a memoir about a specific memory in our tradition. We also continued working through our drafting stage. Students learned about how to add voice into their writing to really help their readers visualize what is happening in the story. We also learned how to use sparkly words (descriptive language) by changing out our words with the use of a thesaurus. We will learn how to write a conclusion, in addition to how to edit next week. Social Studies: We reviewed landforms. Students learned about our different landforms and did an activity to identify landforms based on their attributes. We will begin science next week with learning about life cycles.
