MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 5 MARCH 19, 2018

NOTEWORTHY

In addition to the league’s player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and they include:

Luke Mangieri (BRAD) – Mangieri started the week by

reaching base safely six times Tuesday night at #19 UCF (4-5, 2 BBs) and rode the hot start to a .727 on-base percentage during Bradley’s 4-game week ... The junior first baseman finished the week batting .600 (9-15) with six walks and a hit-by-pitch, reaching base safely 16 times in 22 plate appearances ... Hitting safely in all four games and drawing at least one walk in all four games, Mangieri reached safely at least three times in all four games ... Mangieri raised his batting average 78 points in the four games and he is now second on the team with a .355 season average.

Devlin Granberg (DBU) – DBU senior outfielder Devlin

Granberg hit .500 (9-for-18) last week with two home runs, eight RBI, and three stolen bases. The Patriots’ senior outfielder hit safely in all four games, extending his hitting streak to eight games, and led the Patriots’ offensive attack with a .833 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage. Granberg also hit two home runs and matched a career-high with five RBI against Brown on Saturday.

Brady Huffman (ILS) – Had a 2.57 ERA in two appear-

ances for seven innings during the week. A starting pitcher, Huffman came in during the series finale against Washington to pick up the save. Came back against Hawai’I and pitched a no-decision. For the week he gave up seven hits and two runs, while striking out five.

Triston Polley (INS) – From the start of the game Saturday,

southpaw Triston Polley was dominant. The Avon, Indiana product improved to 4-1 on the season after going seven and a third innings allowing just one earned run that would come in the eighth inning. MVC Players and Pitchers of the Week are selected each week during the baseball season. The players are announced on Monday afternoon and appear in a weekly press release. Nominees are provided by each school’s sports information contact and voted on by a panel appointed by the league office.

John Rave (ILS) – Batted .429 (9-of-21) with four runs

scored in five games during the week (including a seriesending win over Washington that gave the Redbirds the second-ever series win at a Pac-12 opponent). Had three doubles, and a triple, to go with four RBI’s. Had a .667 slugging percentage and a team-best .409 on-base percentage over the five games.

Max Wright (INS) – Indiana State catcher Max Wright led

the Sycamores at the plate during a three-game sweep of The Citadel over the weekend in Charleston, S.C. Wright collected five hits in 11 at bats for a .455 average to go along with a .538 on-base percentage. A sophomore, Wright drove in three runs and scored four times for the Trees while catching one runner on the base paths.

Nikola Vasic (SIU) – Nikola Vasic hit .375 for Southern Illinois this week. Vasic was 6-for-16 and scored four runs. He drew three walks to post a .474 on-base percentage on the week, which included three games against a nationally ranked Illinois team. He went 2-for-3 stealing bases and posted a perfect fielding percentage while making several stellar defensive plays and helping SIU turn five double plays.

Zack Leone (VALPO) – Zack Leone hit .600 (9-for-15) in

three games this week to help the Crusaders take two of three in a weekend series at Arkansas Pine Bluff. Leone was once again a key cog in a Valpo offense that had 10 hits or more in all three games and totaled 39 hits over the three contests. He reached base in all six plate appearances (4-for-4, 2 BB) in a 12-8 Valpo win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, driving in a career-high seven runs in the game. The seven RBIs were the most by any Crusader in a single game since Jake Hanson on March 15, 2016. Leone became just the second Missouri Valley Conference player with seven RBIs in a game this season, joining Illinois State’s John Rave (Feb. 25 vs. Tennessee Tech). The senior transfer is leading the team in hitting in his first season as a Valpo uniform, batting .446.

Matthew Richey (BRAD) – In two relief appearances last

week, Richey allowed just one hit in 4.1 scoreless innings with one walk against four strikeouts ... In Tuesday’s eventual 6-5 loss at #19 UCF, Richey helped the Braves protect a 5-4 lead throughout his 3.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit in his scoreless effort of the pen ... The junior right-hander came back two strike out two on his perfect inning of relief in Saturday’s 6-3 win against UMass ... For the season, Richey is tied for second on the staff with six relief appearances and he is 0-0 with one save, a 3.38 ERA and seven strikeouts in 8.0 innings. MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 5 MARCH 19, 2018

Five in RPI’s Top-100

Five league teams continue to rank in the top100 of the RPI, led by Indiana State (No. 18), Illinois State (No. 26), Bradley (No. 66), Missouri State (No. 87) and DBU (No. 95). Another two teams, Valparaiso (No. 173) and Southern Illinois (No. 176), also rank in the RPI’s top-200.

Valley RPI Ranks No. 9

According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (March 19), the Missouri Valley Conference ranks No. 9 amongst 31 leagues, down three positions from last week. Four of the Power-Five conferences (SEC, ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12) hold four of the top five positions, while the Sun Belt sits fifth.

Wins Over Power Five

Entering this week’s action, the MVC has earned nine wins over members of Power Five conferences. The Valley sits 3-2 vs. the Pac12, 3-4 vs. the Big 12, 2-5 vs. the Big Ten, 1-3 against the ACC and 0-5 vs. the SEC. Six of the eight MVC teams have earned wins against the Power Five. Bradley, Missouri State, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso each have one Power Five win, while DBU has two and Illinois State three.

Strength of Schedule

Illinois State ranks second among Missouri Valley Conference teams at 26 in the RPI, as produced by WarrenNolan.com. The Redbirds have easily posted The Valley’s best strength of schedule to date, checking in at 26 (Indiana State is second in SOS at 83). Illinois State will open the home schedule on Tuesday against Illinois after opening the season with 17-straight road contests. Illinois State’s opponents to date have combined for an 155-95 (.620) Division I record through the weekend.

King Kopach

Southern Illinois’ Connor Kopach ranks top 15 nationally in three different categories. The senior infielder leads the nation with 16 steals this season and ranks 11th in hits (34) and 12th in runs (26). Kopach ranks third in The Valley with a .405 batting average.

Against the Field

The MVC holds a winning record against 13 leagues in non-conference play (Big East, Conference USA, Ivy, Metro, MAC, Mountain West, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Pac-12, Southern, SWAC, Summit and WAC), and at least a .500 record against another two leagues (American and Southland).

Winning Out West

Illinois State claimed a series win at Washington last weekend, taking three out of four games in the series. It marked just the second time in MVC history that a Valley team earned a series win (more than two games) on the road against a Pac-12 team. Missouri State is the only other league team to win a road series vs. the Pac-12, earning a series win at Oregon State in 2009 (2-1).

Missouri State’s Jeremy Eierman is among 55 players on the Golden Spikes Award watch list, which honors the top baseball player in the country. Missouri State’s Jake Fromson and Southern Illinois’ Ryan Netemeyer are listed among 52 student-athletes on the preseason NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award watch list, given to the top relief pitcher.

MVC Series Wins vs. Pac-12 1982 Arizona State at Wichita State (2-1) 1996 Washington at Wichita State (3-0) 2006 USC at Wichita State (3-0) 2009 Missouri State at Oregon State (2-1) 2018 Illinois State at Washington (3-1)

DBU catcher Matt Duce and Valpo catcher Scott Kapers were nated to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award watch list, given annually to the top Division I catcher. The list will be narrowed down to semifinalists on May 16.

Lund Likes Finales

Hot Hannah

Junior college transfer Sam Lund has quickly warmed to his role of weekend finale starter ... Lund has taken the ball to start each of Bradley’s five weekend finales and the Braves are 5-0 in those games ... The transfer from Madison College improved to 3-0 by allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits in his 5.0 innings Saturday, helping the Braves to a 6-3 win against Massachusetts to close Bradley’s spring break trip to Florida ... Sporting a 2.74 ERA in his five starts, Lund has fanned 19 in 23.0 innings and the oppositing is hitting just .214 against him.

Jameson Hannah continues his hot start to 2018, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games and has reached base safely in 30 consecutive games dating back to May 19, 2017. Hannah leads the Patriots in five offensive categories including batting average (.421), runs (23), hits (32), doubles (9), and on-base percentage (.477).

Diggin’ the Long Ball

Ivelia Doubles Up

After returning from an ankle injury suffered in the Jacksonville series, Andrew Ivelia got doubles happy in this past weekend’s four-game series versus Massachusetts ... Ivelia was 4-for-9 against the Minutemen and all four hits went for two bases ... For the season, seven of Ivelia’s 16 hits in 13 games have been doubles and he now leads the team in two-baggers.

Bangert Producing Runs

Senior Derek Bangert has been Bradley’s top run producer throughout the early season ... Through 16 games, not only does Bangert lead the Braves with 20 RBI’s, but he also is tied for second on the team with 13 runs scored ... Subtracting his two home runs, which count toward both the RBI and runs scored totals, Bangert has accounted for 31 runs in Bradley’s 16 games.

The Patriots’ pitching staff is on a record setting pace for strikeouts this year, averaging 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings through the first 18 games. The 2015 team holds the school record for strikeouts per nine with an average of 8.24.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 5 MARCH 19, 2018

EVANSVILLE (5-11)

ILLINOIS STATE (8-9)

Nice Debut

Pac-12 Series Win

Despite getting a no-decision, sophomore relief pitcher Adam Lukas (RHP) shined in his first collegiate start. holding Iowa to one run on four hits, while striking out six across five innings of work in the Purple Aces 4-3 loss in Sunday’s series finale in Iowa City.

With Illinois State’s series victory over Washington (three wins in four games), the Redbirds recorded the fifth series win for the MVC all-time against a team from the Pac-12, and just the second to do it on the road. The most recent series win over the Pac-12 came from Missouri State who took two of three at Oregon State. The other three series wins came from former member Wichita State who swept USC in 2006 at home, swept Washington at home in 1996, and won 2-of-3 at home against Arizona State in 1982.

Fresh Face

It was another solid weekend for freshman third baseman Tanner Craig, who went 5-for-13 at the plate, picking up an RBI in the bargain as well.

The Long and Winding Road

The Purple Aces have struggled mightily away from the cozy confines of Braun Stadium so far in 2018, going winless since their season opening win over Fordham in a tournament in South Carolina.

Polley has pitched 33.1 innings and struck out 26 batters while holding opponents to a .186 average against. He allowed a season-low two hits Saturday at The Citadel in a 7-3 Sycamore win. With Missouri State’s 14-2 win over Seton Hall on Saturday, Bears head coach Keith Guttin moved into a tie with former San Diego State coach Jim Dietz for the No. 22 spot on the NCAA’s Division I career coaching wins list. With a career record of 1,230-765 (.617), Guttin is the secondwinningest coach in MVC history, while his win total ranked sixth among all active Division I head coaches entering the 2018 season. Barring any changes to the Bears’ schedule, Guttin will coach his 2,000th game this Sunday when MSU hosts CSUN.

Eierman On Fire

After a slow start to the 2018 season, preseason All-American Jeremy Eierman has caught fire to record hits in each of his last 10 games, hitting .450 (18-for-40) with all three of his home runs and 15 total runs scored to help the Bears go 7-3 over the same stretch. In addition to his career-best hit streak, Eierman has handled 41 of 42 defensive chances and swiped five bases in five tries.

Coleman Continues Climb

Junior right-hander Dylan Coleman logged another strong outing Saturday at Oklahoma State, holding the Cowboys scoreless on two hits over the first six innings, before a four-run seventh spelled doom for the Bears. Nevertheless, the Potosi, Mo., product fanned five OSU hitters to move past four Bears on MSU’s career strikeout list, climbing all the way to the ninth position, which he currently shares with Pierce Johnson (227). Coleman, who fanned an MVC-high 106 batters in 2016, needs 16 more K’s to match the career total of Jon Harris (2013-15) in the No. 8 position.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 5 MARCH 19, 2018

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (9-11) Harrison’s Stellar Start

Leone Lighting It Up

SIU starter Brad Harrison was bumped up to the weekend rotation and had another solid outing. Against No. 24-ranked Illinois, Harrison retired 10 in a row at one point and pitched into the eighth inning against an Illini team averaging 10 hits and seven runs per game. Outside of a five-hit fifth inning, Harrison only surrendered two hits in his other 6.2 innings. Harrison has four separate streaks of 10+ batters retired in his five starts this season.

Run With Us

SIU went 13-for-14 stealing bases in four games last week, improving its season total to 56 stolen bases. In just 20 games, Southern Illinois is already more than halfway to last year’s total of 100 stolen bases, which ranked 14th nationally. SIU ranks fourth in the league in stolen base percentage at 80 percent, but the three teams with better percentages (DBU, Missouri State, Evansville) have a combined 48 stolen bases, eight fewer than SIU has on its own.

Kopach’s Go-Ahead Homers

Connor Kopach hit two go-ahead home runs in the late innings last week for SIU. Kopach only has two home runs, and both were clutch this week. On Tuesday, with SIU trailing by two runs in the ninth inning, Kopach hit a three-run homer to give SIU the lead. Then, on Tuesday, Kopach hit a go-ahead two-run blast in the seventh inning to give SIU a 5-4 win over a nationally ranked Illinois team. Kopach is the conference’s third-leading hitter at .405 this season.

If the question was whether Zack Leone’s success at the Division III level would carry over to Division I Valparaiso, the answer has been a resounding yes so far this season. Leone posted eye-popping numbers at Susquehanna, where he was named an All-American by D3Baseball.com & the ABCA. He finished his Division III days with a career batting average of .405 that ranks second in program history, 112 RBIs (second all-time), 49 doubles (program record) and 18 home runs (second all-time). He’s managed to post an even better batting average through the first 14 games of his Crusader career, as he stands at .446 to go along with one home run, three doubles and 16 RBIs. He has multiple hits in half of the games he’s played this season and has already racked up five or more RBIs in a single game twice this year.

Balanced Offense

The Crusaders have six players hitting .322 or better, the most they’ve had above that mark at this point in the season in over a decade. Zack Leone (.446), Chase Dawson (.349), Blake Billinger (.342), Sam Shaikin (.333), Giovanni Garbella (.324) and Scott Kapers (.322) are all enjoying strong offensive seasons.
