Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week Connor Sechler, Fr., RHP, Missouri State

Missouri State freshman reliever Connor Sechler played an instrumental role in the Bears’ doubleheader sweep of Indiana State on Friday, earning a save MSU’s 4-3 win in game one—its 12th victory in a Valley opener in the last 13 years—before picking up the win in the Bears’ 5-4 decision in the nightcap. Sechler struck out two Sycamores in a scoreless inning and two-thirds to log his first collegiate save, then allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings in game two to give his offense the opportunity to mount the decisive two-run rally in the 11th inning. In all, Sechler allowed one run on two hits while striking out five in 5.0 innings to help the Bears lock down the series win. Other Notable Performances: Ryan Hodgett (BRAD); Trevor Conn (DBU); Trevor Cross (ILS); Donnie Ames (INS); Trey McDaniel (SIU); Wes Gordon (VALPO)

Brendan Dougherty (BRAD) –

Bradley’s leading hitter showed why during a 4-game week, batting .429 and reaching base safely in 11 of his 19 plate appearances for a .579 on-base percentage ... With six runs scored and two RBI’s, Dougherty accounted for eight runs in the four games ... He started a go-ahead, 3-run rally in the seventh inning Wednesday at Iowa with a leadoff single ... In Friday’s MVC opener, Dougherty drove home the game-winning run with a 2-out, 9th-inning RBI single in the 5-4 victory at Valparaiso ... In Sunday’s series finale, Dougherty was hit by a pitch in the 8th inning and then scored the tying run to start Bradley’s go-ahead rally.

John Rave (ILS) – Had a slugging percentage of .882 with

eight RBI’s and four runs scored from his leadoff position during the week. He also walked three times and did not strike out, and had a .450 on-base percentage. He hit the team’s only two home runs of the week, while also tying for the team high with three doubles. Had a hit in all four games of the week, including two multi-hit games. Had a home run and a double against Western Illinois, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two walks and a stolen base. In the series finale against Southern Illinois he went 2-for-5 with three RBI’s, and the game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth inning. He has a current 14-game hitting streak heading into the week.

Jake Means (INS) – Jake Means led the Sycamores over

the last four games with a .357 batting average and a .714 slugging percentage. Means, a Gardner, Kansas product, recorded multiple hits in two of the four games the week, including a 2-for-4 day against Missouri State when he smashed his fourth home run of the season to tie the ballgame. The junior reached base eight times, including twice on walks and hit-by-pitches for a .471 on-base percentage. Means was also perfect at third base on 18 fielding chances.

Hunter Steinmetz (MSU) –

Junior outfielder Hunter Steinmetz helped the Bears extend their win streak to eight straight games this past week, including a road series win over Indiana State to open the Valley season. Steinmetz hit .417 (7-for-17) with a home run and six RBIs in Missouri State’s four games. He recorded two-hit efforts in each of the Bears’ first three contests of the week, then homered in Sunday’s series finale in Terre Haute to stretch his seasonbest hit streak to nine games.

Ryan Hodgett (BRAD) – Hodgett responded to his first

career weekend Valley start by allowing only one hit in 5.0 scoreless innings of Friday’s doubleheader game 2 start at Valparaiso ... Hodgett did not allow a hit in the first four innings, finally surrendering a 1-out double in his final frame.

Trevor Conn (DBU) – DBU redshirt senior Trevor Conn

improved to 3-0 on the season after holding Southern University scoreless over 5.0 innings in his first start of the year. Conn surrendered just one hit and did not walk any batters, while striking out two in a 10-3 win over the Jaguars. Conn has now worked four straight appearances and 12.0 innings without allowing a run.

Ames was strong in relief for the Sycamores over the last week, tallying 8.2 innings out of the bullpen while notching his second win of the season. The Terre Haute, Indiana native allowed just five base hits and two earned runs against No. 11 Indiana and Missouri State over the span, while holding the opposition to a .167 average against. Trey McDaniel (SIU) – Trey McDaniel held Illinois State

in 2.1 innings in relief over the weekend, helping SIU earn a road series win to open MVC play. Both times, McDaniel entered the game with a one-run lead and kept the Salukis in front both times. In the opener, McDaniel entered with SIU in front 5-4, and he pitched a scoreless eighth inning, paving the way for Ryan Netemeyer’s SIU record-breaking 31st career save. In the two appearances, McDaniel allowed just two hits and limited Redbird batters to a .222 average.

Wes Gordon (VALPO) –

Senior Wes Gordon scattered seven hits over seven innings and permitted just two runs (one earned) while issuing no walks in Sunday’s series finale against Bradley. Gordon exited in position for the win, but eventually was forced to settle for a no decision. This marked the third time this season Gordon has gone at least seven innings in a start and issued no walks. He has allowed just four walks in 30 2/3 innings.

Logan Blackfan (SIU) – Logan Blackfan went 5-for-10

with a home run and six RBIs to lead Saluki Baseball to a series win at Illinois State over the weekend. Blackfan hit a three-run homer in the first game of the series, and he added on with a left-on-left two-out RBI single late in the game. He ended up stealing a base and scoring a run in the series, as well, and he only struck out one time.

Zack Leone (VALPO) – The Missouri Valley Conference’s

leading hitter (.427 average) had another strong week, going 6-for-18 (.333) in five games. He clubbed two doubles, slugged one home run, drove in six runs and racked up 11 total bases. Leone sent Valpo to its first ever Missouri Valley Conference win in dramatic fashion, launching a three-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning in the second game of a doubleheader against Bradley on Friday at Emory G. Bauer Field. That marked Valpo’s first walk-off home run in over 15 years. Leone has been an incredibly clutch hitter this season, as 20 of his 22 RBIs have come with two outs.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 7 APRIL 2, 2018

Five in RPI’s Top-75

Five league teams continue to rank in the top75 of the RPI, led by Missouri State (No. 28), Indiana State (No. 37), DBU (No. 62), Illinois State (No. 64) and Bradley (No. 71). Another two teams, Southern Illinois (No. 125) and Valparaiso (No. 163), also rank in the RPI’s top-175.

Valley RPI Ranks No. 8

According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (April 2), the Missouri Valley Conference ranks No. 8 amongst 31 leagues, moving up one position from last week. Four of the Power-Five conferences (SEC, Big 12, ACC and Pac-12) hold four of the top five positions, while the American sits fifth, the Mountain West sixth and Sun Belt seventh.

Wins Over Power Five

Entering this week’s action, the MVC has earned 10 wins over members of Power Five conferences. The Valley sits 3-2 vs. the Pac12, 4-5 vs. the Big 12, 2-8 vs. the Big Ten, 1-3 against the ACC and 0-5 vs. the SEC. Six of the eight MVC teams have earned wins against the Power Five. Bradley, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso each have one Power Five win, while DBU and Missouri State have two and Illinois State three. This week’s schedule features two games against Power Five teams as TCU visits DBU and Missouri State battles Missouri at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Tuesday.

Quick Starts Crucial

If your team has plans on sitting atop the MVC standings heading into the league’s postseason tournament, you might want to get off to a good start as all but one team that has won the MVC regular season has won at least 15 games since 2010, the first year of a 21-game conference schedule. In the last eight seasons, Indiana State is the only league team to win the MVC regular season title with fewer than 15 league victories, as the Sycamores won the Valley with a 14-7 record in 2012.

Close Calls

The MVC has an 18-28 record in one run contests this season, including a 6-10 mark in extra inning contests. The MVC has fared better in two run games, boasting a 13-12 overall record. The conference sits 31-40 in games decided by two runs or fewer.

Against the Field

The MVC holds a winning record against 14 leagues in non-conference play (Big East, Conference USA, Ivy, Metro, MAC, Mountain West, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Pac-12, Southern, Southland, SWAC, Summit and WAC), and at least a .500 record against another league (American).

Winning Out West

Illinois State claimed a series win at Washington, taking three out of four games in the series. It marked just the second time in MVC history that a Valley team earned a series win (more than two games) on the road against a Pac-12 team. Missouri State is the only other league team to win a road series vs. the Pac12, earning a series win at Oregon State in 2009 (2-1). MVC Series Wins vs. Pac-12 1982 Arizona State at Wichita State (2-1) 1996 Washington at Wichita State (3-0) 2006 USC at Wichita State (3-0) 2009 Missouri State at Oregon State (2-1) 2018 Illinois State at Washington (3-1)

Preseason All-Americans

Two Missouri Valley Conference baseball players were named to the D1Baseball.com All-American team, as announced by the organization. Missouri State shortstop Jeremy Eierman was a first-team selection, while DBU outfielder Jameson Hannah was a third-team choice. Eierman was also a first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and a second-team selection by the NCBWA. MSU teammate Jake Fromson was also honored by Collegiate Baseball, earning second-team honors.

Award Nominees Galore

The bevy of award watch lists has several MVC student-athletes as nominees for national awards. Missouri State’s Jeremy Eierman is among 55 players on the Golden Spikes Award watch list, which honors the top baseball player in the country. Missouri State’s Jake Fromson and Southern Illinois’ Ryan Netemeyer are listed among 52 student-athletes on the preseason NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award watch list, given to the top relief pitcher. DBU catcher Matt Duce and Valpo catcher Scott Kapers were nated to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award watch list, given annually to the top Division I catcher. The list will be narrowed down to semifinalists on May 16.

BRADLEY (14-7)

DBU (16-9)

Disciplined Trio

Bradley’s top three hitters to date all have shown remarkable discipline at the plate ... While junior 1B Luke Mangieri (.388), sophomore 3B Brendan Dougherty (.383) and freshman catcher Keaton Rice (.338) begin the week batting a collective .381, each of the three hot hitters also have reached base via a walk or hit by pitch more often than they have struck out ... Through 21 games, Mangieri has drawn 14 walks and been hit by three pitches, while striking out just nine times ... Dougherty has drawn 11 walks and three HBP’s against 12 strikeouts, while Rice has 16 walks and 15 strikeouts.

Six-For-Six

Junior RHP Sam Lund, a first-year transfer from Madison College, remains perfect as Bradley’s weekend finale starter ... Lund has started the final game in each of Bradley’s first six weekends and the Braves are 6-0 in those starts ... Lund is 3-0 with three no decisions, boasting a 2.79 ERA and .220 opponent batting average.

Rice’s Rifle

Freshman C Keaton Rice enjoyed a strong week throwing out base runners ... In addition to throwing out 4-of-7 runners who tried to steal against him, Rice also gunned out one runner who tried to advance on a pitch in the dirt and picked another runner off first base.

Tons of Runs

DBU has scored 10 or more runs in four consecutive games. Starting with a season-high 21 runs on March 25 at Sam Houston State, the Patriots followed with 10 runs versus Southern University on Thursday, and totaled 12 runs and 14 runs in their two games against Xavier. It marks the most consecutive double-digit games by a Patriot offense since DBU scored 10 or more runs in six straight from April 12-20, 2012.

1-2 Punch

Jameson Hannah and Devlin Granberg continue their torrid pace at the top of DBU’s batting order. In the leadoff spot, Hannah is hitting .404 and extended his career-high hit streak to 26 consecutive games. Hitting second in the Patriots’ order, Granberg owns a team-best .423 with 38 RBI and has hit in 15 straight games. Through 25 games, the tandem of Hannah and Granberg have combined for 85 hits, 10 home runs, 21 doubles, 56 RBI, an 11 stolen bases.

Powerful Millard

Tim Millard hit his ninth home run of the season on Saturday versus Xavier and is just four away from surpassing his career-high mark of 12 home runs in 2017. Millard is on pace to hit 20 home runs this year, a mark that would rank as the third most in a single-season in DBU’s Division I era dating back to 2004.

Tough Decision

Rave Reviews

Sophomore right hand pitcher Adam Lukas continued his successful transition from the bullpen to the starting rotation, going six innings, allowing one run, striking out seven, while scattering four hits and four walks in the Purple Aces 2-1 loss Friday at Creighton.

John Rave is on a current 14-game hitting streak, which is the longest of the season for the Redbirds. That is tied for the longest hitting streak since 2016 when Daniel Dwyer had a 14-game hit streak. That is tied for the longest since current St. Louis Cardinal shortstop Paul DeJong had an 18-game hit streak in 2014.

Strong Relief

Sophomore southpaw Nathan Croner continues to dominate out of the bullpen, pushing his scoreless streak to 7 2/3 innings after a pair of flawless appearances this past weekend’s series with Creighton. Croner hasn’t given up a run in his last six appearances.

Beilsmith Leads Offense

Sophomore slugger Troy Beilsmith had another strong weekend at the plate, going 3-for-10 from the plate, tallying three runs, while knocking in a pair of RBI.

Double Down

This season the Redbirds have clubbed 23 doubles, for an average of 2.52 per game. That is the sixth-highest doubles per game total in the country this season. Illinois State continues to rank 19th in runs scored per game (7.4) and 25th in home runs per game (1.09), and 29th in slugging percentage (.450).

Walk-Off Winner

John Rave’s double against Southern Illinois in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Redbirds a walk-off victory over the Salukis. It was the team’s first walk-off win since May 2 of last season when Owen Miller had a walk-off single against Milwaukee.

INDIANA STATE (15-8)

MISSOURI STATE (19-7)

Moving Up the List

Streaking Steinmetz

Iron Man

Starting Strong

Indiana State head coach Mitch Hannahs sits just one win away from second place in the programs all-time win mark. With the team’s series finale win over Missouri State Saturday, Hannahs picked up his 139th career win, just one victory behind Paul Wolf (140). Hannahs has a 139-99 overall record in five seasons at the helm of the program.

After starting the season with only five hits in his first 30 at-bats, junior outfielder Hunter Steinmetz has keyed a recent surge that has seen the Bears go 15-4 since March 3. Over the same span, Steinmetz has hit .342 (25-for-73) with 19 RBIs and 17 runs scored. The Springfield native has recorded a hit in nine straight games, hitting .389 over the streak after going 7-for-17 (.417) in the Bears’ four outings last week.

Sophomore catcher Max Wright has been everything the Sycamores have asked this season, starting in all 23 games behind the plate, including the backend of two doubleheaders. Wright has played his role well in the batter’s box with 22 hits this year for a .262 average. More than the average though has been his ability to cash in when there are runners on base. The Toronto, Ontario native has driven in 13 runs and has recorded the second-most multi-RBI games on the team with five. Wright’s ability to control the run game has limited the oppositions opportunities on the base paths as well as he has thrown out six of the 12 runners trying to swipe a base.

Wear It

Sycamore outfielder Roberto Enriquez has been hit-by-pitch 12 times this season -- to rank ninth in the nation in the category. With his 0.52 hit-by-pitches per game, he ranks third in the nation. Fellow Sycamore Romero Harris has been six times. As a team, ISU has been hit 43 times to lead the Missouri Valley.

With their MVC series win at Indiana State over the weekend, the Bears have now won 12 of their last 13 Valley openers and have won or split 11 of their last 13 MVC-opening series. Additionally, MSU is a combined 26-10 in its opening conference series since 2006.

Bears on Tap at Busch

Missouri State University and the University of Missouri reached an agreement to add a third meeting to their 2018 baseball schedules and will meet Tuesday (April 3) for a neutral-site contest at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The addition of the Bears’ first-ever game at Busch Stadium also marks the first time the two Show-Me State rivals will square off three times in a season. MSU has won six of the last seven games in the series and holds a 29-25 overall advantage against the Tigers.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 7 APRIL 2, 2018

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (14-13) Henderson Wins 200th

Walk-off Winner

SIU head coach Ken Henderson won his 200th game over the weekend at Illinois State. After the series opener, a 6-4 win, Henderson secured his 200th career win. Henderson is the fourth SIU coach to earn 200 wins at Southern. The others are Abe Martin (for whom the field is named), Itchy Jones (for whom the stadium is named) and Dan Callahan (for whom the MVC Coach of the Year award is named).

Netemeyer Sets Saves Record

Ryan Netemeyer saved both games of a doubleheader at Illinois State on Friday. With his first save of the day, Netemeyer broke the program record for career saves with his 31st, and he added on with his 32nd career save later in the day. Netemeyer broke Bryant George’s record of 30 saves from 2007-10. Currently, Netemeyer has 32 career saves and is within striking distance of second place on the MVC’s all-time saves list (Missouri State’s Brian Young [2014-17] is second with 35 career saves).

Vasic’s Run

SIU leadoff man Nikola Vasic started his Division I career 0-for-13. Since then, he’s reached base in 25-straight games. Since the 0-for-13 start, Vasic is hitting 35-for-95 (.368). He has at least one hit in 23 of the last 25 games, and one of his no-hit games was due to drawing four walks.

Valpo reversed the ghosts of years past on Friday when Zack Leone crushed a three-run, walk-off home run, Valpo’s first game-ending long ball in over 15 years. The swing that sent Valpo to a 5-2, 10 inning victory over Bradley for its first Missouri Valley Conference triumph also allowed the team to lay to rest the ghosts of the program’s recent past. Three of the Crusaders’ first five losses this season came in walk-off fashion, while Valpo has been hurt by walkoff home runs in the past as well – most recently last year’s season opener at Western Kentucky and most notably a 2013 NCAA Tournament game against Indiana.

Opening an Era

This past weekend’s three-game series with Bradley at Emory G. Bauer Field was historic before the first game even began. It marked the first Missouri Valley Conference games for the Crusaders in their first year in the league. The last time the Valpo baseball team played its first game in a new conference was March 21, 2008, a doubleheader at Wright State. The Crusaders split that twinbill, winning the opener 6-5 before falling 8-7 in 10 innings in the second game. Head coach Brian Schmack is the only person who was in attendance on Friday and was also there for Valpo’s initial games in the Horizon League, as he then served as the pitching coach under Tracy Woodson.
