In addition to the league’s player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and they include:

a 1.35 ERA in two appearances (6.2 innings). In his first start of the year versus No. 23 TCU, Boyle allowed just one run over 3.1 innings, to help lift the Patriots to a 3-2 win. On Saturday at Illinois State, Boyle came out of the pen to shutout the Redbirds for 3.1 innings, giving up just one hit, while striking out three to earn the win.

Kody Funderburk (DBU) – DBU junior Kody Funderburk

Matt Walker (ILS) – Started in the Redbirds’ final game

hit .375 (6-for-16) to go along with two home runs and a pair of doubles last week. For the third time this year, Funderburk smashed two home runs in a game, hitting a pair of round-trippers in DBU’s dramatic 17-11 comeback win in extra innings over Illinois State on Saturday. Funderburk also led the Patriots in runs (6), total bases (14), slugging percentage (.875) and played errorless baseball in 32 chances at first base.

Noah Sadler (ILS) – Batted .417 during the week (5-of-

12) with three runs scored, one home run, and four RBI’s. He also leads the team in on-base percentage (.533), and is tied for the team lead with a .667 slugging percentage. Had a hit in every game this week for the Redbirds including a 3-for-5 effort from the plate in the second game. He had four RBI’s in the middle game of the series against Dallas Baptist, including a home run. He drew a walk in the first and third game of the series, and was hit by a pitch in the middle contest. He scored twice in the second game, and once in the third for his three runs of the weekend.

CJ Huntley (INS) – Sycamore outfielder CJ Huntley finished with a .273 average and a team high four RBIs in three starts at Bradley. He drove in all four of those runs in a 9-3 victory over the Braves Saturday. Huntley tallied a pair of extra-base hits, including his first triple of the season for a .545 slugging percentage. The Kalamazoo, Michigan product was also perfect in the field as he made 11 putouts.

of the week, and went six innings, giving up three hits and allowing an unearned run. He struck out five in the nodecision, and walked two.

Triston Polley (INS) – Southpaw Triston Polley continued his winning ways over the weekend at Bradley, picking up a Saturday victory to improve to 5-1 on the season. Polley went six and two-third innings allowing just two earned runs on four base hits. He held opponents to a .174 average against and retired four Braves via strikeouts.

Logan Wiley (MSU) –

Sophomore right-hander Logan Wiley struck out a career-best nine hitters over 6.0 shutout innings Sunday to help the Bears secure a series sweep of Evansville. Wiley retired the first 11 UE hitters of the game and scattered three singles—the only three UE batters to reach base against the Springfield native—to earn his fourth win of the season.

Trey Ferketic (VALPO) – Trey Ferketic hurled a 130-pitch

complete game on Saturday, lifting Valpo to a 6-2 win over Southern Illinois. The Valpo right-hander limited the Salukis to two runs on two walks and nine hits while striking out seven. He became the first Crusader to throw a complete game since April 23, 2017, when Ellis Foreman went the distance in a 9-0 win over Wright State. Ferketic became just the fifth player in The Valley with a nine-inning outing this season.

MVC Players and Pitchers of the Week are selected each week during the baseball season. The players are announced on Monday afternoon and appear in a weekly press release. Nominees are provided by each school’s sports information contact and voted on by a panel appointed by the league office.

Drew Curtis (SIU) – Drew Curtis slugged .941 and drove

in seven runs for Southern Illinois in its 3-1 week. Curtis went 8-for-17 (.471) with two doubles and two home runs as Southern’s designated hitter. He hit a pair of two-run homers in the weekend series against Valparaiso. Against the Crusaders, Curtis hit .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles and two home runs.

Blake Billinger (VALPO) – Blake Billinger batted a robust

.769 (10-for-13) for the week in a three-game MVC series at Southern Illinois. Billinger went 5-for-5 in Saturday’s 6-2 win, becoming the first Crusader with a 5-for-5 game since Justin Frane on April 3, 2010 against Chicago State. Billinger continued his tear on Sunday, when he accounted for three of his team’s five hits. That marked his team-leading fourth three-hit game of the year. He also leads the team with 14 multi-hit games. Billinger doubled twice this week and now has 13 for the season, second only to DBU’s Jameson Hannah on the Valley leader board.

Alex Gray (BRAD) – Gray continues to provide reliable long

relief for the Braves and once again came out of the pen to give the Braves a chance to rally in Sunday’s series finale versus Indiana State … Gray entered Sunday’s game to start the fourth with the Braves trailing, 5-3 … He finished out the game, allowing one unearned run on four hits with one walk and a career-best seven strikeouts in his career-long 6.0 IP … Although he has not started a game this season, Gray has averaged nearly 4.0 innings in his eight relief appearances and he is 5-0 to date this season … In his five wins, Gray has worked at least 2.0 IP in all five without allowing more than one run in any of the five victories.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 8 APRIL 9, 2018

Five in RPI’s Top-75

Five league teams continue to rank in the top75 of the RPI, led by Missouri State (No. 41), Indiana State (No. 47), DBU (No. 58), Bradley (No. 66) and Illinois State (No. 71). Another two teams, Southern Illinois (No. 135) and Valparaiso (No. 155), also rank in the RPI’s top-175.

Valley RPI Ranks No. 7

Against the Field

The MVC holds a winning record against 14 leagues in non-conference play (Big East, Conference USA, Ivy, Metro, MAC, Mountain West, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Pac-12, Southern, Southland, SWAC, Summit and WAC), and at least a .500 record against another two leagues (American and Big 12).

NCAA Doubles Leaders

According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (April 9), the Missouri Valley Conference ranks No. 7 amongst 31 leagues, moving up one position from last week. Four of the Power-Five conferences (SEC, Big 12, ACC and Pac-12) hold four of the top five positions, while the American sits fifth and Sun Belt seventh.

Missouri State appeared at No. 19 in this week’s D1Baseball.com Top 25 Poll. The Bears also sit No. 24 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball poll and No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. DBU also received votes in the NCBWA and USA Today Coaches Poll, while appearing No. 25 in this week’s Baseball America rankings.

Southern Illinois senior Logan Blackfan ranks in the top five of the NCAA active career doubles leaders chart. Blackfan currently sits second on the list.

Wins Over Power Five

Winning Out West

DBU’s Devlin Granberg ranks in the top five of the NCAA active career batting average leaders chart. Granberg currently sits second on the list.

Entering this week’s action, the MVC has earned 11 wins over members of Power Five conferences. The Valley sits 3-2 vs. the Pac12, 5-5 vs. the Big 12, 2-8 vs. the Big Ten, 1-3 against the ACC and 0-5 vs. the SEC. Six of the eight MVC teams have earned wins against the Power Five. Bradley, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso each have one Power Five win, while Missouri State has two and DBU and Illinois State three. This week’s schedule features 11 games against Power Five teams. Missouri State will host #9 Oregon State for a three-game series, while Valpo will travel to Michigan State for three games. Tuesday’s schedule features: Illinois State at Illinois, Missouri at Missouri State, Iowa at Bradley, Indiana State at #10 Indiana and #6 Texas Tech at DBU.

Quick Starts Crucial

If your team has plans on sitting atop the MVC standings heading into the league’s postseason tournament, you might want to get off to a good start as all but one team that has won the MVC regular season has won at least 15 games since 2010, the first year of a 21-game conference schedule. In the last eight seasons, Indiana State is the only league team to win the MVC regular season title with fewer than 15 league victories, as the Sycamores won the Valley with a 14-7 record in 2012.

Back-to-Back

Missouri State is looking to become just the second Valley school to win back-to-back regular-season titles, as Wichita State remains the only league school to have ever accomplished this feat. The Shockers won back-toback titles in 2007-2008, were winners of 14 consecutive regular-season championships from 1987-2000 (includes one shared championship with Southern Illinois in 1990).

Illinois State claimed a series win at Washington, taking three out of four games in the series. It marked just the second time in MVC history that a Valley team earned a series win (more than two games) on the road against a Pac-12 team. Missouri State is the only other league team to win a road series vs. the Pac12, earning a series win at Oregon State in 2009 (2-1). MVC Series Wins vs. Pac-12 1982 Arizona State at Wichita State (2-1) 1996 Washington at Wichita State (3-0) 2006 USC at Wichita State (3-0) 2009 Missouri State at Oregon State (2-1) 2018 Illinois State at Washington (3-1)

Streaking at Hammons

With three straight wins over Evansville to start their current seven-game home stand, the Bears ran their 2018 home mark to 11-2 and extended their current Hammons Field win streak to 10 consecutive victories since March 11. That streak represents the sixth different home win streak of at least six games since the start of the 2015 season, as well as the Bears’ third-longest home streak since moving to Hammons Field in 2004. The longest such streak is 16 straight victories from April 18, 2015 through March 6, 2016. Current Home Win Streaks (NCAA) 12 Arkansas 11 Michigan 10 Missouri State

Preseason All-Americans

Two Missouri Valley Conference baseball players were named to the D1Baseball.com All-American team, as announced by the organization. Missouri State shortstop Jeremy Eierman was a first-team selection, while DBU outfielder Jameson Hannah was a third-team choice. Eierman was also a first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and a second-team selection by the NCBWA. MSU teammate Jake Fromson was also honored by Collegiate Baseball, earning second-team honors.

Award Nominees Galore

The bevy of award watch lists has several MVC student-athletes as nominees for national awards. Missouri State’s Jeremy Eierman is among 55 players on the Golden Spikes Award watch list, which honors the top baseball player in the country. Missouri State’s Jake Fromson and Southern Illinois’ Ryan Netemeyer are listed among 52 student-athletes on the preseason NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award watch list, given to the top relief pitcher. DBU catcher Matt Duce and Valpo catcher Scott Kapers were nated to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award watch list, given annually to the top Division I catcher. The list will be narrowed down to semifinalists on May 16.

Top Plays

Streak Snapped

Bradley junior CF Andy Shadid made his second appearance on ESPN SportsCenter Top Plays Friday by making a diving catch in the left centerfield gap in the eighth inning of the 6-3, series-opening win against Indiana State …. Shadid’s play was No. 5 during SportsCenter At Night’s “Top Plays” segment, one spot below his No. 4 effort April 22, 2016 at Wichita State.

DBU saw their season-high seven game win streak snapped on Sunday at Illinois State. During that streak, the Patriots outscored their opponents 86-34 and scored 10 or more runs in five of their wins. It marked the Patriots longest win streak since they won seven in a row last year from April 14-25.

Hannah Hit Streak

Free Passes for the Braves

After drawing seven walks during the game-winning, 9th-inning rally last Sunday at Valparaiso, Bradley once again drew seven walks in the third inning, while scoring what proved to be the deciding run Wednesday at Western Illinois … In four games last week, the Braves drew 21 walks … Nine different Bradley hitters drew at least two walks during the four games last week.

First Two Valley Series Wins

Bradley has opened the Missouri Valley Conference season by winning 2-of-3 games at Valparaiso and home against Indiana State … The Braves have won their first two league series for the first time since 2006, when the Bradley also took 2-of-3 against both #27 Creighton and Southern Illinois … Bradley will visit Evansville this weekend in search of a third consecutive Valley series victory for the first time since taking 2-of-3 from Wichita State, Evansville and Indiana State during the 2015 NCAA Regional season.

Busting Out

Walk-Away Walk-Off

Model of Efficiency

Streaking With the Hits

After struggling through the first two months of the season, sophomore infielder Craig Shepherd broke out of his slump this past week. Shepherd went 6-for-14 at the plate, scoring three runs while driving in an RBI. The highlight of the week came on Sunday when Shepherd went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run and driving in another in the Purple Aces series finale loss to Missouri State.

For the second consecutive weekend, the Illinois State Redbirds used a walk-off victory on get-away day for the opponent. Against Southern Illinois, Owen Miller doubled home John Rave for the walk-off win, while against Dallas Baptist, it was a Ryan Hutchinson fielder’s choice that scored Jordan Libman and gave the Redbirds the series-ending win.

Sophomore utility player Troy Beilsmith had an incredibly efficient week at the dish. While going 4-for-16, Beilsmith g drove in 3 runs, while scoring a three for the Purple Aces, highlighted by a 3-for-5 performance, driving in a run in a midweek setback to Murray State.

Sight for Sore Eyes

After spending nearly a month on the road, the Purple Aces will now play the 12 of their next 13 games back at Charles A. Braun Stadium in Evansville, beginning Tuesday night with a non-conference showdown with Murray State. UE’s lone road trip during the homes stand will be a non-conference mid-week match-up with Vanderbilt Tuesday, April 17 in Nashville.

After recording a hit in all three of the team’s games against Dallas Baptist, John Rave has increased his hitting streak to 17 games on the season. That is the second-longest by a Redbird batter since 2004, as current St. Louis Cardinal shortstop Paul DeJong had an 18-game hit streak during the 2014 season. The Redbirds have had 32 different batters with 10+ game hit streaks since 2004, including three this season (Collin Braithwaite, 13 games; Owen Miller, 12 games).

RBI Leader

Through two conference weekends, Illinois State’s Derek Parola leads all MVC players with nine RBI’s and is tied for second in hits, while John Rave is also tied for second in hits, and is tied for the conference lead with 17 total bases.

INDIANA STATE (16-10) Moving Up the List

Double Trouble

Sycamore skipper Mitch Hannahs moved into second place in program history Saturday after securing his 140th career victory during a 9-3 win over Bradley, tying former ISU head coach Paul Wolf. Hannahs has a 140-101 overall record in five seasons at the helm of the program.

He Can Deal

Triston Polley has been the most dominant arm in the Sycamore rotation so far this year. In eight starts, the Avon, Indiana product holds a 5-1 record to go along with a 2.61 ERA -- the second-best ERA in the MVC. Polley has pitched 51.2 innings and struck out 34 batters while holding opponents to a .211 average against. On the year, the southpaw has allowed only 15 earned runs and one or fewer earned runs in four starts. In his last outing at Bradley, Polley gave up just four hits and two earned runs in six and two-third innings en route to the win.

Get the Lead and Keep It

Indiana State holds a 14-0 record when leading after eight innings this season thanks in part to the arm of closer Ethan Larrison who leads the team with seven saves. Also, filling in middle relief, Larrison has 33 innings on the season, striking out 32 batters in that time while holding opponents to a .216 average against. Fellow bullpen arms Donnie Ames and Tyler Grauer account for a save each. The Sycamores hold a 12-1 record when leading after six and a 12-3 record when leading after seven innings.

MISSOURI STATE (22-7)

5 PM 6:30 PM 4 PM 1 PM 5:30 PM 1 PM 12 PM 3 PM 2 PM 12 PM 12 PM

The Bears’ sophomore catching combination of Logan Geha and Drew Millas turned in a weekend to remember in leading the Bears to a series sweep of Evansville. The duo went 10-for-17 (.588) with four doubles, a triple and six RBIs over the three games. In Sunday’s series finale, they were particularly lethal, combining to go 4-for-7 with three walks, three runs scored and three RBIs. They also teamed up to backstop a strong weekend from the MSU pitching staff, which allowed just eight earned runs and struck out 23 Purple Aces and issued only four walks over the 27.0 innings in the series.

Going Green

The Bears will go green this Tuesday when they host in-state rival Mizzou at Hammons Field, as Missouri State University is partnering with Mid-America Transplant for the first of two ‘Green Up’ games during National Donate Life Month in order to raise awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation, while also celebrating organ and tissue donors and recipients. The Bears will wear a special green and blue outlined MSU hat against the Tigers, and fans will have the opportunity to learn more about organ, eye and tissue donation and register their decision to be a donor.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 8 APRIL 9, 2018

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS (17-14) Harrison’s Third Shutout

Going the Distance

Brad Harrison threw seven shutout innings against Valpo on Sunday, and Trey McDaniel pitched the final two innings to secure Southern’s fourth shutout of the year. Harrison has started three of those four shutouts, going the distance in one of them (at Belmont). In the three shutouts, Harrison has 35 strikeouts against only three walks in 24 innings. He has allowed just seven hits and limited opponents to a .089 batting average.

Valpo starting pitcher Trey Ferketic hurled a 130-pitch complete game in the middle game of this past weekend’s series at Southern Illinois, limiting the Salukis to two runs on two walks and nine hits while striking out seven. Ferketic became the first Crusader to throw a complete game since April 23, 2017, when Ellis Foreman went the distance in a 9-0 win over Wright State.

Five Hit Day

Salukis Rolling

After starting the year 3-8, Southern Illinois has won 14 of its last 20 games and seven of its last nine. The Salukis opened MVC play with back-to-back outright series wins for the first time since 1999 after winning two of three from both Illinois State and Valparaiso.

Mid-Week Success

SIU went 3-10 in mid-week games in 2017, but the Salukis have gone 6-1 in mid-week contests so far in 2018. In those seven mid-week games, SIU is outscoring opponents 73-30. The Salukis are hitting .297 and limiting opponents to a .194 average.

VALPARAISO (9-18)

Time 0-1 0-2 0-3 1-3 1-4 2-4 2-5 3-5

Blake Billinger racked up five hits in Valpo’s 6-2 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday. He became the second Valpo hitter to post a five-hit game this season, joining Chase Dawson, who went 5-for-6 against CSUN on March 2, a 14-13 loss. Valpo has two five-hit games this season after having one (Nolan Lodden, 2016) in the previous seven years combined. Furthermore, Billinger became the first Crusader since Justin Frane on April 3, 2010 against Chicago State to go 5-for-5 in a game.

Triple Time

Valpo junior Chase Dawson notched his fourth triple of the season on Sunday at Southern Illinois. He took over sole possession of the MVC lead with four triples on the season. In the process, the Valpo junior became the first Crusader since Andy Burns in 2013 to have four triples in a single season.
