Red Ribbon Week Kicks Off With the 1st Annual Red Devil Dash Color Run
This year we will be kicking off our Red Devil Red Ribbon Week with the Red Devil Dash Color Run on Saturday, October 24, 2015. The Junior Class is sponsoring the run kicking off a week long Drug Awareness Week. Which will include guest speakers and spirit days. Friday, October 30, 2015 will be a costume day to celebrating the end of the week. Red Ribbon Week began in the mid 1980’s in Calexico, California after a public outpouring of support following the deaths of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. Agent Camarena and his pilot Captain Alfredo Zavala-Avelar lost their lives fighting the war against drugs, helping to take down a multi-million dollar narcotics manufacturing operation in Chihuahua, Mexico. He angered the leaders of several
drug cartels who sought revenge. The dramatic events were chronicled in the national media and exposed the dark world of drug trafficking including how far drug traffickers would go to maintain power and control. A fight that is still being fought by law enforcement across the country. The Calexico, California Community organized a community response to the deaths and the citizens wore red ribbons. They became a voice for prevention in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and illegal use of drugs in America. The year following the deaths the California State PTA adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign and then in 1988 Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally with
President Ronald and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairs.
Important Dates:
28 years later the Red Ribbon Celebration brings millions of people together, raising awareness about the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention and treatment services. It is the largest most visible awareness campaign observed annually in the United States.
