News from Mrs. Miller’s 2nd Grade Classroom

Ahoy Mateys, Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. School is off to a great start and all of my little pirates “Arrrgh Ready for a Super Year.” Second grade is a very fun and exciting place to be. We have already started working on our math facts and your child should be practicing those at home. My students are already working their way towards a yummy ice cream cone if they learn all of their addition facts by December. During math class we have been working on adding and subtracting numbers to 20 using number bonds and the “Make Ten” strategy. The students use the educational math fact fluency website (Reflex) every day to increase his/her math fact fluency. SFA has not started yet but we have been working on GAT (Getting Along Together). The students are learning how to manage their feelings, focus during class, and listen to the speaker. SFA will start September 8th. Your child will be bringing home his/her Read &Respond sheet every night. Remember your child needs to read for 20 minutes and then write two sentences about what they read. During Social Studies, the second graders have been learning how to read a map using directions. They also have worked on designing their own treasure maps. In science, we did an experiment with baking soda and vinegar. It was a lot of fun and the kids had an “explosive time.” As you can see, our school year is off to great start. Please feel free to “Come Aboard our Ship” anytime to see all of the wonderful things that are happening at LGS. Mrs. Miller
