T STEPS

Sermon Series: ORANGE Message: “Bright Lights!” Text: Matthew 5:14-16 FIRST STEP: (GROUP DISCUSSIONS – Pick one or two to discuss) 1. Describe the role the home plays in making disciples of children? 2. Describe the role the church plays in making disciples of kids and students? 3. Who had the greatest influence on your spiritual journey (negatively or positively) as a child and why?

SECOND STEP: (BIBLE INTAKE – Dig as deep as you desire) 1. Read (Matthew 5:13-16): Is the “you are” a singular or plural focus? How does that impact the application of these verses? What did “salt” represent in Jesus day? What does “salt” represent today? What did “light” represent in Jesus day? What does “light” represent in our world today? What is the ultimate purpose of letting our light shine? 2. Read (Matthew 5:16): “Good works” comes from a Greek word which could easily be translated “beautiful works”, “handsome works”, “excellent works”, “choice works” or “eminent works”. How might you display “beautiful works” on a given day? How might you display “beautiful works” to your children, grandchildren or community children? How might we as a church display “beautiful works” to the families in our community? Notice “see” vs. “hear”. 3. Using the chart below – talk about your parenting priorities and what LIGHT means to you. Pastor Mark’s Parental Priorities That our kids have an authentic relationship with Christ. That our kids know that we will fight to have a relationship with them. That our relationships with our spouse affects our kids more than we realize. Being together is not the same as interacting together. As parents, we are the primary influencers but we are not the only influencers.

Pastor Mark’s Application of Light L = LOVE (see John 13:34-35) I = IDENTITY (see 2 Corinthians 5:17) G= GRACE (see 2 Peter 3:18) H= HOPE (see Romans 15:13) T=TRUTH (see John 8:31-32)

THIRD STEP: (APPLICATION – Be doers of the Word)  Create a list of ways you can empower and encourage parents in their role as parents.
