Sermon Series: AWAKEN JOY Message: “Deal or No Deal” Text: John 15:1-17 FIRST STEP: (GROUP DISCUSSIONS – Pick one or two to discuss) 1. 2. 3. 4.

What are some of your favorite Mother’s Day memories either as a mom or child? What is the best deal that you have ever made? What is the worst deal that you ever made? How well did you do this past week keeping your joy tank full? What went well? What did not? If you were a vinedresser what might you expect to do in order to produce fruitful crops?

SECOND STEP: (BIBLE INTAKE – Dig as deep as you desire) 1. Read (John 15:1-11): What is the DEAL that Jesus wants us to make with him as Christians? What is the advantage or blessing(s) associated with that DEAL? What makes us say NO DEAL? 2. Read (John 15:1-11): This is a great passage to explore the three primary questions of bible study. REMEMBER WE CAN HAVE DIFFERENT ANSWERS! What does Jesus want you to KNOW? What does Jesus want you to DO? What does Jesus want you to FEEL? Which of these three questions is the most important for us to understand and why? Which word(s) are repeated? 3. DISCUSS (John 15:1-11): Pastor Mark talked about four fruit basket outcomes! 1) NO FRUIT, 2) FRUIT, 3) MORE FRUIT and 4) MUCH FRUIT. Which basket best represents HCC and why? What basket best represents your past week, past month and past year? What is the “fruit”? 4. Read (John 15:1-11): Define what it means to be “in me”. Define what it means to be “in my love”. Define what it means to “abide/remain”. Define what it means to “bear much fruit”. Describe based upon your definitions what it looks like for you to abide in Christ 24/7 and why. How would you describe the WHAT, the HOW and the WHY of the practice of abiding in Christ? 5. Read (John 15:7): Why does Jesus add “my words”? How does abiding in Christ and his words impact and influence our prayer life? Is this a blank check given to our prayer life? 6. Read (John 15:11): Why did Jesus give us the illustration of the vine and the branches? What is the difference between “my joy” and “your joy”? How does one know if we have the joy of Christ within us? What does “full joy” mean in this context? Compare with last week’s “full joy”. 7. What roles does obedience and keeping the commandments of Christ play in our fellowship and joy? What role does loving others play in our fellowship and joy? What role does prayer play? 8. MOMS: What does joyful mothering look like according to you based upon this passage?

THIRD STEP: (APPLICATION – Be doers of the Word)  Abiding in Christ is more than bible study and prayer. Write out a plan for abiding in Christ.  For the past two weeks we have talked about FULL or COMPLETE JOY! Gauge your JOY.  Your joy ultimately glorifies God (15:8) and blesses others (15:16-17). Pursue blessing others.
