Sermon Series: CROSSWORDS Message: “FORGIVEN” Text: Luke 23:26-34 FIRST STEP: (GROUP DISCUSSIONS – Pick one or two to discuss) 1. What part of the crucifixion story causes you the most pain to ponder? 2. If you were to teach on “Father, forgive them” what points would you emphasize to your audience? 3. Do you have a short list of sins or sinful people that you believe are unforgiveable? Where did that short list come from?

SECOND STEP: (BIBLE INTAKE – Dig as deep as you desire) 1. Read (Luke 23:26-34): Circle the words or phrases that you feel are the most meaningful. Why

did you circle them? What is the significance of Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross for Jesus? In the Gospel of Mark his two sons are mentioned Alexander and Rufus. What impact would seeing Christ crucified have had on you as a child? Scholars believe that Rufus was possibly the one who communicated to Luke the first words of Jesus, is that a significant piece to the story? Father forgive them is a prayer. Jesus began and ended his ministry with a prayer (Luke 3:21). What does this teach us about prayer? Which part of the prayer impacts you the most “Father”, “forgive them” or “they know not”? What is the significance of his reason “they know not what they are doing”? What is the relevance of Jesus prayer for us as believers today? Read (Genesis 50:17): Compare and contrast the plea of Joseph’s brothers with that of Christ’s plea to his Father. What does Genesis 50 teach us about the concept of relational forgiveness? Read (Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:13-14, 2:13-14): What do these verses teach us about forgiveness? How is forgiveness obtained? Which sins are atoned for? What must happen before forgiveness can occur in the life of a sinner? Highlight and circle key words or phrases! Read (1 John 1:9): What is the difference between this verse and the previous verses? How would you describe confession to a child? What happens if we fail to confess our sins as a believer? What is the purpose of confession if our sins have already been forgiven in Christ? Read (Psalm 32:1-2, 103:1-5): What further insights do these Psalms reveal about forgiveness? What are some of the blessings of knowing we are forgiven? What happens when we hide sin?

THIRD STEP: (APPLICATION – Be doers of the Word)  Confess your sins to God and an accountability partner. Prayerfully ask God to show you your sins both conscious and unconscious sins, sins of omission and commission.  Pray for your enemies. Pray for those on your short list who need to be forgiven.
