Sawtooth Patchwork Quilt Block
Uses 3 different fabrics in a 6 inch (9 inch, 12 inch) quilt block Cut Fabric A – Center and corner focal fabric 2 squares – 3 ½ inches (4 ½ inches, 5 ½ inches) 1 square – 2 ½ inches (3 inches, 4 inches) Fabric B – Top, bottom, and side focal fabric 4 squares – 2 ½ inches (3 inches, 4 inches) Fabric C – Background fabric 2 squares – 3 ½ inches (4 ½ inches, 5 ½ inches) 10 squares – 2 ½ inches (3 inches, 4 inches) then cut diagonally, resulting in 20 triangles Sew 4 half square triangles.
Lay 1 Fabric A and 1 Fabric C 3 ½ inch square right sides together (printed sides of the fabric touching each other).
Draw a line diagonally across the square.
Then draw a line on either side of the diagonal line, ¼ inches away. You now have 3 lines drawn, each ¼ of an inch from each other.
Sew along the 2 outer lines. Cut long the centerline, being very careful to leave ¼ inch of fabric from the seam line. Press open toward the darker fabric.
You will have 4 half square triangles. Trim all 4 to 2 ½ inches (3 ½ inches, 4 ½ inches). Set aside. With the 5 patterned blocks, make square in square blocks. Working opposite sides, sew triangles onto the patterned squares.
Lay the long side (hypotenuse) of the triangle along one of the sides of the patterned square. Center the triangle and square so that the ends of the triangle extend beyond the square equally on both sides.
Sew together leaving a ¼ inch seam allowance. Repeat on the opposite side. Press open. Sew triangle on the remaining 2 sides. Press open. You now have 4 half square triangles, 4 Fabric B square in square blocks and 1 Fabric A square in square block. Lay the 9 blocks out in the illustrated pattern.
Sew together the 3 rows of 3.
Press the top and bottom rows toward the outside and the center row toward the middle.
Sew the 3 rows together. Here you have the Sawtooth Patchwork Quilt Block.
