Intramural Sports Indoor Volleyball Rules 2017-2018 Note: The official rules of the National Federation of State High School Associations will apply to Intramural contests except for the local modifications listed below. EVERY INTRAMURAL PARTICIPANT MUST HAVE A CURRENT TCU ID IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE. BEFORE EVERY EVENT YOUR TEAMS ID’S MUST BE TURNED INTO THE SCORE KEEPER. Number of players: Two teams consisting of 6 players per team will play the game. A minimum of 4 players must be present to avoid a forfeit. Eligibility: Current TCU students, faculty, and staff are eligible to participate. Alumni or community members are not eligible to participate in Intramural Sports. A player may only participate on one men’s or women’s team. They may also play on one co-rec team. Each men’s and women’s team may have two (2) club volleyball players (maximum) and each co-rec team may have only one (1) from each club (maximum) on each roster (1 men’s club player, and one women’s club player). Rosters: Rosters are composed of a minimum of 4 players. Additional players may be added until the end of your last regular season match. Teams may not exceed 12 players. Deleting players will only be done at the discretion of the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports. Team Captains: Each team will designate a team captain. That captain will be the spokesperson for that team. They are the only person allowed to speak with the officials. Coaches may not be captains.
Time: *Game time is forfeit time. A team must have a minimum of 4 team members present and ready to participate at the scheduled game time in order to avoid a forfeit. 1. Matches will consist of the best 2 out of 3 rally scoring to 21, or whoever is winning at the end of 20 minutes. If a third game is necessary, it is rally scoring to 15. 2. You must win by 2 and there is NO cap. 3. You must switch sides at the conclusion of each game. If necessary, during the third game, teams will switch sides once a team reaches 8 points. 4. Each team is allowed one 30 second timeout per game. Equipment: 1. Proper athletic attire required. Players must wear athletic court type shoes. No black soled shoes that leave marks are allowed 2. TCU will provide a game ball. However, if a team wishes to use their own volleyball it must be agreed upon by both teams. 3. No Jewelry may be worn during Intramural Competition. 4. No baseball caps or visors may be worn. Player Disqualification: A player will be ejected for the following: 1. Any act which, in the official’s judgment, is intended to injure another player. 2. Throwing a punch at ANYONE (whether it connects or not). 3. Contact with an official. 4. Any other act deemed severe enough by the official (i.e. extreme or extended use of profane language). An ejected player must leave the game site and sound after filling out paper work with the supervisor on duty. If the person being ejected fails to leave then the game will result in a forfeit. Any person ejected must meet with the Assistant Director of Intramural Sports before he/she may participate again. Teams are responsible for their spectators. The same rules for behavior apply to them and affect their team. Game Rules/Definitions: 1. The coin toss winner may elect to serve, receive the serve, or side. 2. The team not serving first in the game shall serve first in the second game. 3. A new coin toss is performed before the third game, if necessary. 4. The team that receives the ball first in the game shall rotate once before serving. 5. The server has 5 seconds, or team loses the serve. 6. Substitutions may occur when the ball is dead.
7. Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts of the ball in order to return the ball to the opponent’s area. Blocks do not count as a hit. 8. No player may spike or block a serve. 9. Players may interchange positions to pass or block, only after the serve. 10. All passes must be clearly hit, not thrown, lifted, or change of direction allowed by a double hit. 11. A back line player may spike providing that he/she start his/her jump behind the 10-foot line. 12. No player may reach over or touch the net, or step over centerline (A player’s foot may land on the centerline provided it is not entirely over the line. Also, while playing the ball in his/her court, a player is allowed to reach under the net, but must not touch the floor over the centerline. 13. Successive contacts may be made only after blocking a spike attempt. 14. Opponents simultaneously hitting the ball directly over the net may play the ball again if it falls into their court. 15. Each serve must be put into play by hitting the ball underhand or overhand over the net into the opponent’s court by a player in the serving side. The player serving must not step on or over the end line until after the ball is contacted on the serve. (Foot Fault: penalty-side out). Players must stay in serving order. Players may switch positions after service provided they return to their original positions after each point. SERVES MAY HIT THE NET AS LONG AS THEY GO OVER. 16. LEGAL HIT: A contact of the ball to be legal must be made with any part of the body. The ball may be played below the waist. A legal hit must be a “clean” hit. The ball may not be carried on the follow through. 17. ILLEGAL HITS: An Illegal hit is: 1) slapping the ball, 2) bumping the ball with two separated hands (hands must be together), 3) carrying the ball, 4) palming the ball, 5) directing the ball. 18. Net plays: a. A spiker may have his hand(s) or arm(s) follow through over the net as long as the ball is contacted on his own side of the net. b. Players may reach over the net and block the ball, provided the opposing team has completed their attempt to return the ball over the net. c. The ball is considered to have crossed the net when any part of the ball is extended over the net. CO-REC MODIFICATIONS Each team will consist of three males and three females. If the ball is hit more than once on your side of the net, a female must touch the ball at least once. The players must alternate themselves in a male/female fashion on the court.
